ILLUSTRIOUS SIR Eric DeWalt POTENTATE OF ALZAFAR SHRINERS One man can make a difference, One man cannot do it alone. The cover of the first article of the 2019 year has an emblem on it that means a lot to me. The Silent Messenger coupled with the Shriner walking into a Star. The Silent Messenger was from a photograph taken in 1970 at a picnic in Evansville, Indiana for medically challenged children. The photo captured a Shriner, Al Horton, who stooped down and picked up, 5-year-old Bobbi Jo Wright, along with her crutches, and carried her all across the park that day. The Silent messenger stands as a lasting representation of the commitment that our Shriners have to our Philanthropy. I was inspired to add the Star that the Shriner is walking up to by Neil Edward Peart, a Canadian author and musician. The Star was depicted on an album cover Titles 2112 with a man walking towards it. It’s meaning was an abstract or faceless man against the masses. I was inspired to put these two symbols together as one to show our direction for 2019. We are a family, we are good brothers walking together for a greater purpose. We are good men trying to become better men. One man can make a difference, but one man cannot do it alone is our moto for 2019. You are that one man. Think how you can make a difference in a child’s life, in the life of a brother or the life of another. But remember that working together as a TEAM means we can accomplish so much more. I salute all the Unit/Club heads that have stepped up this year to dedicate their time, talent and tithing for this Fraternity full of great men. Together we will accomplish much. I am humbled to be elected in the position of Potentate for the year 2019 and my goal is to serve our Philanthropy, our Fraternity and you to the best of my ability. LUM

CHIEF RABBAN Marty Bartlett This year has finally come to a close and I am very excited about the new year and our new Potentate. From talking with Eric, I know that he has lots of great things planned for us. Our goal for all hospital fundraising for the year was $400,000 and as of early December we are at $375,000, so we might actually make that big goal! Great job everyone and we have already raised more funds for our hospitals this year than any year before. Next year I will likely be raising money for our philanthropy. It will be another fun year with a Circus planned and hopefully some other internal fundraisers to raise funds for our house. When we have information on when and how the Circus is shaping up for next year, I will let everyone know. I hope your Christmas with family has been great and you are pumped up to get the year started.

ASSISTANT RABBAN Travis Elmendorf Nobles, hope this finds you all well coming through the gauntlet of the holiday season. Welcome to 2019, a new year with new ambitions, goals, and desires. May the Grand Architect guide us and temper us for the tasks ahead. In 2018 we accomplished may labors, singularly and collectively; we should commend ourselves on many a job well done. Our great fraternity and it’s mission, functions best when every effort is working towards the same end. Last year as the High Priest and Prophet was a lively and enjoyable one. Not a single undertaking can be attained minus the assistance from you, the Nobility of Alzafar. Thank you for your continued support and confidence. Looking forward to working with all the units and their newly elected officers, thank you Nobles for stepping up to represent your respective units and clubs. The leadership role is a truly fulfilling one, a wee bit taxing at times but a grand endeavor to be sure. I applaud you in taking on these roles and wish you fair winds and God’s speed. If there is anything that I can do from within the role of Assistant Rabban or outside of it, please feel free to reach out. Our first great deed on the ledger for the Assistant Rabban would be IHOP’s National Pancake Day, more information to come. I am also in charge of the Achbar this year and would love to see it packed each month with every unit/club’s scribblings. I have some ideas and thoughts regarding the Achbar and will be approaching the individual Noble and or unit that it pertains to. If any of you Nobles would like to see something added, all will be considered. Please feel free to reach out to me. Until we see each other again, AR out.

High Priest & Prophet

Oriental Guide

As I write this article, I can’t help but think about this past year and that this is the last time I will write to the Nobility as your Oriental Guide. To say this year went by extremely fast would be an understatement. I have thoroughly enjoyed being your Oriental Guide and it’s been a great pleasure. I tried every day to put my best foot forward in all that I did. I can only hope I have made you all proud. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds as you have now elected me as your High Priest and Prophet for 2019. I can promise you that I will continue to go the extra mile while representing and serving you to the best of my ability.

Nobles, let me start off by saying how grateful I am that you placed your trust in my abilities. I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of the Shrine for most of my life. There have been many times throughout my life that I’ve pondered upon this very adventure that you’ve allowed me to start. I hope to step into this role with the same energy, enthusiasm, and dedication as I have with any endeavor throughout my life. I’m looking forward to working with all of you towards a prosperous year filled with many great memories. As we move throughout the year, there will be many events to plan for. This year will be no different and Amanda and I are thankful for those of you who have already answered the call to action. For those of you who would like to join in the fun, please feel free to call or email me and let me know your interest. If you have an idea, I’d love to hear it. If you have a specialty, we’d love to know it. Whether you have experience with fundraising, design, marketing, finance, business, construction, or anything, please reach out and let us know. The Shrine has many moving parts and we’d love to know your interests so that we can make sure we’re utilizing your expertise to better our fraternity and philanthropy. Lastly, each Divan member has responsibilities that they must attend to throughout the year. As your Oriental Guide, I am charged with the successful completion of the Easter, Halloween, and Christmas parties. All of which I’m already working on. The dates have been reserved and please consider this article as my first official request of the nobility for your support. If at all possible, join us in making this next year, one to remember. I’m thankful for all of you and I’m looking forward to working side by side with each of you over the coming years. Respectfully, Rick “Tater” Reyes

Robert Noman II

To my fellow Divan members: what a year!!! Between all the meetings, parades, events, phone calls, text messages and rite of passage, it has been a pleasure working with each and every one of you. Each one of you have taught me something different and have given me more ideas and assistance throughout the year than I could have asked for. I really do appreciate each one of you and thank you for always being there if I had any questions or issues. To the Nobility: Lady Tiffany and I want to say THANK YOU!!! We Thank You for allowing and trusting in us to serve on your Divan and look forward to 2019 as your High Priest and Prophet and Lady. We are humbled and honored to have the opportunity to lead and serve Alzafar Shrine. When I became your Oriental Guide I said, “To the Nobility: I promise I will do my best to not let you down as I will not let myself down. I understand you have entrusted in me a huge responsibility and I don’t take it lightly.” It is my truest hope that I have succeeded in the task. I will continue in my stride to be the best that I can be for the nobility and the children that we serve. Thank you all so very much!!! Not to slow down…. We are hitting the ground running in 2019 as your newly Elected High Priest and Prophet and Lady. Our first responsibility is the Masonic Youth Luncheon and Grand Masters Conference. The event will take place on March 2nd. It will be a full day starting with the Alamo, then to the Shrine Center for a presentation and luncheon with the DeMolay, and then rounding out the afternoon with the Grand Master of Texas Masons. Stay tuned for more information. Again we thank you all for the opportunity to serve you.

I want to thank everyone who recruited new Nobles last year. I am proud to serve the Shrine another year as Membership Chairman. Within the next few weeks, I will be meeting with the Divan to discuss ideas on how to become diverse in our recruiting efforts. Remember this must be a team effort. I am always open to suggestions.

Goodbye 2018 and Hello 2019! I also want to thank all the other the Nobles that ran for elections. We should all be thankful we have a very active Shrine Center. At a time when some Shrine Centers cannot find leaders willing to commit and serve, we have so many good Nobles willing to run for election. Congratulations to the newly elected Divan members. A quick reminder for the New Leaders in your Units and Clubs-we need everyone to give Carol a list of your new officers. We also need you to give Alex a new financial form (the old A /B report). We need these two reports by the end of January 2018 or ASAP. Want to refer someone you know to become an Alzafar Member? Let’s make 2019 the best year by far. I believe we can do it so what are we waiting for? Let’s begin the recruiting.

What a ride it’s been this year for the club. We’ve been in every parade and have done such an awesome job raising funds for our kids. Throughout the year, we managed to grow by leaps and bounds and because of this, our unit is sure to thrive for years to come. Most recently, we held our annual Christmas party at The Barn Door. We welcomed in two new members and ate like royalty. I’d like to congratulate our newest officers to the unit. Our President for 2019 is Mike Long. 1st Vice President is Marco Zuniga. Treasurer remains Noble James Hoyo and our Secretary will be yet again, Ken Hawkins. A huge thank you to all those that stepped up for the coming years to make a difference. As we move into 2019, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all their support this year. There’s absolutely no way we would have seen the successes we did without everyone’s support and contributions, so again, thank you. Lastly, if you or someone you know wants to join our ranks, they need only show up and ask. Our meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7pm. You need not have a car to join. We only ask that you support the unit in any way you can.

We welcomed 1 new officer to our unit, newly made Shriner Steve Fisk who will begin his first full-year as a Shriner serving as Vice President of our club. Our club wishes the best to new President Bubba Peel who did an extraordinary job as Vice-President and we know he will be an even better President of our unit. His goal was to keep as many karts on the street for the Temple and he did a great job. Again a big thank you to Ed and his lady Dee on being there not just for our unit but for our Temple. GOLF UNIT GIMMIES By: Walt Atencio Congratulations to the 2019 Golf Unit OfficersPresident Nino, Vice President Grona and 2d Vice President Jorgensen. Officers were installed by Past Potentate Hunt at the annual Christmas/Installation dinner party on December 14th at the Petroleum Club. Elected officers, assisted by the Board of Directors, are responsible to guide and direct the unit events and activities throughout the year. The unit started the new year on a positive note by welcoming the newest member Noble Manuel Hernandez to the golf family. The January unit stated meeting, as is custom, included our ladies and enjoyed a great dinner. To show our appreciation for their support, a Ladies Night Out is programmed throughout the year. Golf is seen by many as a means of relaxation and other as an obsession. I want to share some thoughts that perhaps might change the outlook of golfing. I extracted these from the local newspaper: “If one looks at a golf course as God’s landscape, it can bring certain serenity. Think of it as an island of peace in a world full of confusion and turmoil. The basic techniques in golf can apply to life: “Keeping your head down, speaks for humility, Keeping your eye on the ball, denotes resolution and concentration, and Following through is a lesson in persistence." Just something to think about. Hope everybody has a leisurely, relaxing and fun golfing year. HAPPY NEW YEAR

LEGION OF HONOR By: Tony Calderon The Legion of Honor says goodbye to 2018 and we want to wish everyone a very prosperous New Year. With 2019 ahead of us, we will be working hard to keep this unit moving forward and in the right direction. As a Veteran, we continue to push forward and complete the mission and this mindset is what keeps this unit going. We would love to meet new members this year so take some time and meet other Veterans within Alzafar Temple. We would like to take some time out to say Thank You to Arthur “Art” Canizales for his outstanding role as 2018 Colonel. Throughout his leadership we have been able to bring in new members and also get a good foundation started. It takes time to get a unit where it needs to be and he has set the bar high for the coming officers to follow. We would like to wish him and his lovely lady the best and will continue to lean on him for guidance for 2019. Let us welcome our new 2019 officers-Colonel Alfred T. PARADE MARSHAL By: Rick "Tater" Reyes

NEMNUF By: Rick "Tater" Reyes

Well, we did it! December is here and we made it through the year with plenty to talk about. Throughout the year you have seen your world famous Alzafar NEMNUF clowns perusing the streets of all the surrounding communities, supporting our hospitals at various events, and raising money for our temple. We’ve added a few new novice clowns to the mix and introduced some new active clowns as well. Most recently the clowns represented the Shrine in both the Veterans day parade in San Antonio and the Christmas parade in Alamo Heights. Along with the parades, the clowns participated at many local functions to raise money for our unit. At our November stated meeting, we elected our 2019 officers. They are; Jon “Auzzie” Strandlie, President. Garrett “Popp-E” Ethridge 1st Vice President. Mike “Tiddlywinks” Long, 2nd Vice President, and Ed “Bugsy” Tuma as Secretary/ Treasurer. I’d like to congratulate all of them for stepping up. I know they’ll do a great job. I’d like to thank everyone for their support over the last three years on the line. Amanda and I are truly grateful for the friendships we’ve gained. We enjoyed every step of the way and wish the following line the very best in their efforts. We will continue to be there for the unit as we always have. Finally, please remember that anyone can be a member, whether you’re a clown or just a social member, you’re invited to come hang with us. Our meetings are the 2 nd Monday of the month with a meal at 6:30pm and the meeting starting at 7:30pm.

Well the end of the year is upon us and unfortunately, mother nature won this one. Our annual Christmas parade in Sattler was cancelled due to weather. That’s ok though, as we were able to attend Alamo Heights Christmas parade a few weeks before. We had a large turn out there and really represented our Shrine well. I was lucky enough to drive our High Priest and Prophet, Noble Travis Elmendorf in the parade. As always, we managed to chat and laugh our way through the streets of Alamo Heights. As we move into the New Year, our new parade marshal will be Noble Mike Long. I have turned over the operation of the Shrine Parade website and I’m certain he will do a great job keeping everyone informed. Our next parade is planned for February and will be in Laredo so make sure you mark your calendars. As always, if you or anyone you know has a parade that you think the shrine should participate in, let your Parade Marshal know so that he can bring it to the Potentate. Lastly, thanks to everyone for their support this year in my efforts. Change can sometimes be hard to accept but I’m glad to say that all of you answered the call and smashed the challenges presented to you. We now have a functioning website which has not only made it easier for people to find out parade information but has also cut down on time that unit officers would have spent searching for information and also saved the Shrine money in the process. Great job all!

NEKODAH TEMPLE NO. 44 DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE Don’t forget the Supreme Queen visit on Jan 13th at 2pm in the Alzafar Parlors; a banquet to follow (Social at 5:00pm and Dinner at 6:00pm) in the Alzafar Terrace room. ROADSTER RUMBLINGS By: el Bucko First the good news, we voted in two new members last Tuesday just in time for the 2019 election of officers. They have cars and trailers and we can expect to have them parade NLT the George Washington's Birthday Celebration in Laredo in February. Welcome Nobles Mike Callaway (often known as mustache Mike) and Noble Tim Horgan. Officers elected for the 2019 Masonic year are: President-Noble Ken Whited, 1st Vice-Noble Baldie Tamayo, 2nd Vice-Noble Mike Callaway, CaptainNoble Andy Perez. Appointed officers were TreasurerNoble Adam Apolinar, Secretary-Noble Buck Bourne, and Quartermaster-Noble Tim Horgan. Congrats to all. The two new Nobles were able to obtain Roadsters thru our new "lend - lease" program. A certain amount of Roadsters were available for $500 deposit. At least one more car is available on this program. On a more somber note, we lost a long time faithful member. Noble Manuel "Manny" Musquiz laid down his working tools after a six year struggle with the big "C". Manny was ever cheerful while maintaining a realistic attitude toward his illness. Being the Marine that he was, he continued to fight to the end. I loved that guy.

RV CLUB By: Dave Browne The November rally was held at Skyline Ranch RV Park in Kerrville. This was our last rally for the year. We had a fantastic turn out for the rally and Christmas party. We also had the installation of new officers. The dinner was at Brick’s River Café where we had a super meal. The new officers are: Wagon MasterNoble Dave Brewton, Assistant Wagon Master- Noble Eddy Bowers, Secretary–Noble Mike Barnes, and Treasure–yours truly, and were installed by Noble Eric DeWalt (Chief Rabban). The rally locations are set for the next year and it looks like we can’t help but have fun. We also had three new members join the club. Our January rally will be held at the Bluff Trails private ranch in Ingram. We go there every year in the winter to enjoy the large fireplace and wild life. The dates are Jan. 24th thru 27th.

For over 30 years I've written an Achbar column for at least one unit, and sometimes more than one unit. I've tried to inform and perhaps entertain in my columns. As such, I've included a quip or quote from country wisdom. I've been asked to write these columns for another year for the Roadsters. If you find my quips annoying just let me know and I'll tell you -TOO BAD! Seriously, I can leave them off as I'm limited to 300 words. The arthritis in my fingers will enjoy the rest. If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

Come camp with us, size or type does not matter. (Two of our member’s campers) If you have a RV and want to have a lot of fun in a relaxed atmosphere with Brother Nobles and their Ladies, come out and rally with us. I know you will have a great time. Call Wagon Master Dave Brewton (210-643-0314) or Assistant Wagon Master Eddy Bowers (210-508-3989) for information about the next rally. You can always call me at (210-6797356).

SENIORS By: Roger Hopkins The Alzafar Seniors met on the 6th of December, the day before Pearl Harbor Day. The meeting was opened by our President, Noble Earl “Tex Phillips followed by an invocation from our Chaplain, Noble Donald Garrido, PP. We then rendered honors to the America and Texas flag and went into a great lunch prepared for us by Tex and Sandra Phillips and Dan and Yaeko Coburn. This was so much more than a lunch consisting of Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, salad, tea, cookies and great appetites plus desserts from the Phillips and Coburns. Following this fantastic meal, our business meeting consisted of the recognition of anniversaries/birthdays (Joe and Maggie Estlack are celebrating their 60th anniversary, we were also pleased to have out incoming Chief Rabban, Marty Bartlett, who is celebrating a recent birthday, anniversary and daughter graduating from college in a week). We then moved on to nominating next years president, vice-president, chaplain, treasurer and secretary. Installation is planned for our January lunch with Don Garrido as Presiding Officer. All our Shrine members should bring their Fez for pictures. Our new officers for 2019 are: Daniel Coburn, President; Jerold Hopkins, Vice President; Joe Estlack, Treasurer; Donald Garrido, Chaplain and Roger Hopkins, Secretary. Following elections, we had a very informative presentation by Noble Gordon McKinnie on the various services provided by the Houston and Galveston Shrine Hospitals. The purpose of his presentation was to better inform the group of the numerous conditions that are being treated at our Hospitals in hopes that the members and wives will be watchful and better informed and able to refer the members of our community that are in needs of our assistance. In January, Jerry and Bonnie Hopkins will be arranging lunch and Liz Kienbaum, Maggie Estlack and John Morris will be providing lunch. Noble Garrido gave a Benediction and our President closed the meeting. We look forward to seeing many of you at our next meeting scheduled to take place in the Parlors on January 3rd. Until then, we wish you all a Merry

Christmas and a Happy New Year.

ALZAFAR SHOTGUN UNIT By: Terry Zittle Greetings to all. We have been a little busy the last month or so doing what we do. On November 12th, we had our stated monthly meeting starting with Smoked Turkey provided by Noble David Hadley. Other members brought out quite the assortment of side dishes. I believe we had in excess of 45 Nobles and Ladies present. The highlight of the meeting was the election of officers for the upcoming year. Elected officers are: President Noble Bill Willis, 1st Vice President Noble Guillermo De Hoyos, 2nd Vice President Noble Tom Jackson, Treasurer Noble Jerry Smitha, and the Secretary is yours truly. As per our custom the installation of officers was conducted at our Annual Christmas Party at the new Saltgrass Restaurant off of Loop 410. We had in attendance 60 Nobles, Ladies and guests. It was the biggest turnout we have ever had. Several raffle items went home with deserving winners. The installation of officers was orchestrated by Ill Sir Past Potentate J.D. Thomas. He was assisted by Past Potentate Paul McCombs and Ill Sir Jason Triggs. It was an honor to have Ill Sir Triggs and Past Potentate McCombs attend. Our next stated meeting will be in our room on January 14, 2019. Meal will be served at 6:15 pm and the meeting starts at 7:00 pm. Feel free to drop on by and see whats going on. A little hint, we will be shooing Sporting Clays for our Mid-Winter, March 9th, in Houston and probably Sporting Clays again at TSA in Wichita Falls in June.
