Message from Adam Rocha, Executive Director of SAFILM Welcome to the 22nd Edition of the SAFILM-San Antonio Film Festival. We have such a great program of films, panels, after-parties and more to share with you this year! For the first time ever, together with our generous sponsor the Pearl, we will present the SAFILM-San Antonio Children’s Film Festival at the Studio in the Full Goods building at the historic Pearl Brewery. The wonderful films and scheduling for our San Antonio Children’s Film Festival were programmed in association with the TIFF Kids International Film Festival and will be presented Wednesday through Saturday in the mornings. Another first this year is our inaugural SCREENWRITING CONTEST! We worked with talented screenwriter David J. Healey (Leaves of the Tree), who coordinated, read and helped judge the entries. The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Brunch at O’liva. Tickets to attend the brunch are available at SAFILM.com. We hope you find this program useful. This handy guide, designed with great care by Mr. Julian Cordero of Lamb Creative, ThinkLamb.com, contains the schedule for each room, followed by a description of every film screened at the festival. You’ll also enjoy special information from our sponsors and a brief visitor’s guide to the great eateries at the Pearl compiled by Martin Valdespino. The San Antonio Film Festival started 22 years ago when I realized we didn’t have a way for filmmakers to share their art in San Antonio. It has grown tremendously – and is even recognized as an important festival on the circuit by the press and many filmmakers. But that never would have happened without the help of so many passionate and generous people. I would like to extend special thanks to my wife and film festival producer, Susan Ranjel, Cedric Smith, Martin Valdespino, Scot Power, Julian Cordero, Ryan Rocha, Trevor Tatsch, Michael Ochoa, Mike Fisher, Robert Tatum, Zane Thomas, Anna Garcia Catalani, Lane Alvarez, Raychell Rippy, Ashley Lopez, Craig Hubbard, Sarah Fisch, Kimberly Suta, Cesar Hernandez, Hector Rocha, Yolanda Ranjel, Lisa Ranjel, Hondo Aguliar, Michael Kincaid, Sam Rodriguez, Florence Edwards and the Covo Family. Also, I would like to extend congratulations for a job well done and a round of applause to our team of hard-working interns: Dominica Ruelas, Kase Duggan, Jack Nguyen, Jessica Cantu, Nicholas Luna, Suzanna Neal, Julian Torres. Thank you all for your hard work! Thank you to all our filmmakers, our audience and supporters for joining us this year … see you at the movies!

Adam Rocha, Executive Director SAFILM

Stranded on an island during the devastation he wondered if he would ever see his family again. THE OPPOSUM BEGINS DIR: RICK MEDINA / SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS / 20MIN The opossum, or “tlacuache” as many in the Rio Grande Valley know, is a misunderstood nocturnal animal, but for Brownsville, Texas native Aaron Moses it was a source of inspiration. The heart of southwest Louisiana’s Cajun Country is known as Acadiana, and it is the epicenter of the Creole culture. It is a place forever proud of – and indelibly tied to – a history based upon its people living off the land. For the Acadians, whose history dates back to the French and Indian war of the 1700s, food is synonymous with survival, independence and celebration. Acadiana is the setting for this documentary about a food culture akin to a living language; where even today farmers, fisherman and hunters do what is necessary to feed themselves and their families. Black Pot, boucheries, Grand Isle, the Atchafalaya Basin, Courir Mardi Gras, Crawfish country … this film takes a sweeping look at a unique portion of Louisiana that revolves around the little-known yet essential American story of the modern pioneers of Louisiana’s iconic foods. ALVAREZ STUDIO 8PM

DIR: ANNE GOURSAUD / LOS ANGELES, CA / 1HR33MIN

The new documentary, “A Classy Broad,” chronicles the career of trailblazing Hollywood executive Marcia Nasatir of San Antonio, who broke through the glass ceiling back in the ‘70s. At a time when gender inequality in Hollywood continued to make headlines, Marcia achieved success as a producer and as the first woman to serve as vice-president of production at a major Hollywood studio, United Artists. DONE. NEXT! Through interviews, stock footage, and Marcia’s own narrative, this “untold Hollywood story” unfolds, following Marcia’s career from lone female literary agent at The Ziegler Agency where she represented writers like William Goldman (BUTCH CASSIDY and The SUNDANCE KID), Lorenzo Semple (THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, PARALLAX VIEW) and Robert Towne (CHINATOWN), to United Artists where she became the first female vice-president in charge of production. At UA, Marcia championed films that have become American classics, including: ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, ROCKY, CARRIE, COMING HOME, APOCALYPSE NOW, THE BLACK STALLION. Unceremoniously dismissed, she moved on to a career as an independent producer where she continued to fight for films that were difficult to make. She took on THE BIG CHILL, a film that had been turned down by seventeen companies and fought to get it financed. Larry Kasdan, the writer/director credits Marcia for getting his picture made. We will honor Marcia Nasatir with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Awards Brunch at noon on Sunday, July 31. ALVAREZ STUDIO
