EDUCATION VILLAGE IN CCISD HOME TO WETLANDS PROJECT

lage. Career and Technical Education students at Clear Falls made the concrete anchors. CCISD Students and community members of all ages volunteered in November to install the floating islands.

CLEAR LAKE HS ORCHESTRA 1ST IN TEXAS Some would say the Clear Lake High School Orchestra has become a dynasty under the direction of Bryan Buffaloe. The orchestra began its ascent in 2010 when the group placed second at the Texas Music Educator’s (TMEA) Honor Orchestra competition. Since then the Clear Lake Orchestra managed to snag 1st place in 2011, 2013 and 2014. They were 2nd in 2012. “This achievement is unprecedented in any division of the Texas Music Educators Association, band, choir or orchestra divisions,” explains CCISD Director of Visual and Performing Arts Dean Muths, “Clear Lake High School Orchestra is one of the most consistently successful programs in state history, and that is saying something in Texas.” The orchestra has 13 All-State students, which is typical of this high school program. “These students and their directors are extraordinary in every measure,” said Muths. The Clear Lake High School Orchestra will perform in February at the TMEA convention in San Antonio.

A retention pond behind the Education Village in Clear Creek ISD has been transformed into a unique outdoor space that is part classroom and part environmental project. With the guidance of the Texas coastal Watershed program and Texas Sea Grant, teachers, students and community volunteers created a floating wetlands area. The islands are buoyant rafts of recycled plastic fibers on which wetland plants can grow. Roots work their way through the mesh of the islands and into the water, where they take up fertilizer and other contaminants washed into the pond with the stormwater. The rafts also develop communities of wetland microorganisms, which break down pollutants in the water. The islands are anchored and can rise and fall as the water level in the pond changes. Students at Mossman Elementary School, Bayside Intermediate School and Clear Falls High School helped care for the plants in a greenhouse at Education VilTo Advertise Call 281-488-7422

ists and drugs when you need them most. In the event of a serious illness or injury your limited access to the care by highly qualified specialists and non- formulary drugs will impact your prognosis for health and recovery in a significant way even though you have ìhealth insuranceî. In my opinion and experience, of the elements listed above the most important are the specialist physician network, pharmacy and access to out-of network benefits. Most people are not aware of the value in having out-ofnetwork benefits. Out-of-network benefits can be a back door for access to care by some of the best specialists, hospital networks and outpatient services should you need them. The trend with health care plans now and into the future is the limiting of access to care by offering fewer choices of doctors, hospitals and outpatient services. Be diligent in researching your choices. *Dr. Koepsel is the senior partner of Bay Area Podiatry Associates has practiced in the Clear Lake area since 1985. He received his MBA in 2000 at UHCL with an emphasis on healthcare systems.

The actual leg work in determining what your access to and choices of doctors are, pharmacy benefits, emergency care and out-patient services are left up to the individual or family decision maker. Making a good choice is essential to your health care and the health care of your family. I think that most people in this country who already have health insurance assumed that it would only be the un-insured that would be using the government health care exchanges. After all we were all told that if we like our insurance plan and our doctors we could keep them. However it has become quite clear that this is not the case and many of us will be forced into the government health care exchanges. With this in mind I want to discuss briefly what elements are important in making your choice of health plan either now or in the future. The elements that are important in choosing a health plan include: Monthly premium costs, deductibles/co-pays, access to a physician network of family practice doctors and specialists, pharmacy benefits, access to hospitals and out patient services and out-of-network benefits. Certainly cost is a significant factor in making a choice but by far is not the most important element in making your choice. An inexpensive monthly premium with a high deductible may actually leave you with limited access and choices to special-

CHURCHES & RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS NASSAU BAY BAPTIST CHURCH TO PRESENT EASTER MUSICAL DRAMA ‘BOW THE KNEE’ Life’s circumstances are sometimes fraught with confusion. Discernment is difficult at best and answers are elusive. Such is the story of “Bow the Knee, a musical dramatic production presented by Nassau Bay Baptist Church, 7 p.m. April 11, 12, 18, and 19. The presentation is a gift to the community, free of charge, but reservations are recommended as seating is limited. Tickets can be downloaded at www. nassaubaybaptist.org. When a Roman centurion suspects Jesus is more than a trouble maker he finds himself caught between two worlds. Each encounter with the miracleworking rabbi chips away at his doubts causing his subordinates–and eventually Pilate–to question the centurion’s allegiance to the Roman Empire.

Yet standing on the side of faith is a trusted servant to the centurion who urges the long-time soldier to believe the incomprehensible and trust the heart of the Father. “I am so excited to watch and listen as we present our Easter production of ‘Bow the Knee’ this April, said Roger Sharp, NBBC minister of worship. “The acoustics, lights, and audio are designed for an optimal, worshipful experience.

CONGREGATION SHAAR HASHALOM CARNIVAL WITH JEWISH FLAVOR Jews have their own Halloween? Who knew? Purim is the Jewish celebration which some compare to Halloween. Well, the comparison is not quite correct: Indeed, people & children as well as adults - put on costumes, but that’s where the similarity ends. Purim is the celebration of the deliverance of the Jews from the evil Haman, through the courage of their leader, Queen Esther and her cousin, Mordechai. Though a relatively minor Jewish holiday, Purim is one of the most joyous holidays. It is celebrated with sending special pastries called Hamentashen (Ozney Haman in Hebrew) to friends, putting on costumes (especially those of the story characters) and reading the Megilah - the story of the Book of Esther. During the reading, every time Haman’s name is mentioned, everybody drowns it out with boisterous noise making and booing. The festival takes place each year on the 14th day of Adar (the 6th month of the current Jewish calendar).Congregation Shaar Hashalom together with Temple Beth Tikvah in Clear Lake will celebrate Purim with their annual Carnival on Sunday, March 23rd from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The festival will take place at Shaar Hashalom. Congregation Shaar Hashalom, a conservative synagogue and member of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, is located at 16020 El Camino Real (midway between Bay Area Blvd. and El Dorado). Temple Beth Tikvah is the reform synagogue in Clear Lake.

SPURLOCK CONCRETE AND FENCING 713-772-3600 Spurlock Fence & Concrete are great, I would recommend them to everyone. Several years ago a neighbor told me “if you ever need a fence, call John Spurlock.” This was the year to get a new fence. I called John and he came over that afternoon to discuss my fence. While he was here, I mentioned I needed to find a person for my driveway, at the time I did not know he also did driveways. Mr. Spurlock’s crew did a superb job on both the fence and driveway. I am very pleased with every aspect of the job. Even though Mr. Spurlock had several jobs going, he still took time to drive by and inspect the work. The job was completed in a timely manner and I can say he was a honest and pleasant person to do business with. Violet Phillips, Bay Pointe
