Have we really become the “no-vacation nation”? According to Forbes, we have. When 1,200 full-time employees were surveyed for the research, 47 percent didn’t take all of their vacation time last year, while 21 percent “left more than five vacation days on the table.”

T

he reasons for this vacation opt-out range from “My boss doesn’t like it,” to “It’ll derail my career,” to “It’s harder than ever to unplug” (48 percent of respondents said they “check on work while vacationing,” including 19 percent who do so every day). So let’s see if we can’t start to reverse the trend right here, right now, by encouraging you to make that vacation booking you so deserve, and for the following very good reasons:  Discussed at home, if any “How can we afford it?” question arises, argue thus: “By increasing the quality of our golf vacation, we will get more out of it, using less time.”  Your boss (we all have one) will be impressed by your singleminded determination to take a golf break; your team will admire your fortitude.  Your boss will realize what a key member of the team you are when you’re not there and may even recognize your value by offering you a salary hike on your return.  If you’re low on energy because you’ve spent too long focusing on a tough business problem, take a break, take a real break.  Released from your business pressure-cooker for, say, ten (working) days, a sense of euphoria will descend—you even laugh happily at the thought of taking the kids with you to that dream destination.  It’s a fact: Vacations are good for our health.

 The resort is welcoming, the views blow your mind, the food is great, the kids aren’t fighting, your partner suddenly says they love you and tomorrow … tomorrow you’ll be playing out your dream on that championship course where your golf heroes have made history.

As the daydream ends and you think this through, the idea of taking the vacation you’ve earned certainly does make very good sense. Here are some enticing options … Our regular roundup of luxury golf destinations begins in Mississippi, moving to Arizona, California, then on to New Mexico and Mexico, finally island-hopping to the Dominican Republic and Bermuda.
