Course Insight The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course, one of the club’s three courses, was designed in 1928 by renowned architect William Flynn. The front nine is more low-lying, and the back nine goes up into the hills and has more undulation. The courses hosted the U.S. Amateur in 1955 and 1975. Architect Lester George oversaw a renovation in 2003-4, bringing back strategic elements of the original design while building new fourth, sixth and 18th holes. W W W.PGATOUR.COM

Woody Austin birdied the par-5 18th after his fastmoving chip shot hit the flagstick and finished six feet away, a putt that gave him a one-stroke victory over Bernhard Langer. “I always say usually the person that wins gets a break on Sunday. That was my break,” said Austin. The 54-year-old shot a 69 in the final round to come from three strokes behind, as the top three players on the leaderboard through 36 holes all shot 74 or worse. Langer, trying to win a second consecutive start, birdied Nos. 8 and 9 and got as close as within one stroke of the lead but parred the first eight holes on the back nine and birdied 18 only after Austin’s birdie there had put him ahead by two strokes.

CHARITY BENEFIT

The tournament beneficiaries are Virginia Values Veterans, which creates employment opportunities for transitioning service members, and the Raymond Fisher House, which provides free onsite housing for military families of hospitalized veterans at the McGuire Holmes VA Hospital. Additionally, the tournament’s Birdies for Charity program gives local charities a chance to generate contributions.

Course Insight Located in a beautiful setting at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, Sherwood Country Club was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1989. The course makes use of the natural elements of land elevations and valleys, waterfalls, running streams and unique rock formations to make for an aesthetically rich and strategically challenging layout. The par-72 course deviates from the norm with five par-5s balanced by five par-3s. The adjoining Lake Sherwood got its name when the area was used for the filming of “Robin Hood” in 1921.

Scott Parel claimed his second victory in two months—and second in his PGA TOUR Champions career—with a final-round 68 at Sherwood Country Club. “When you’re playing pretty good and hitting the ball well and playing solid, you just try to keep those positive thoughts. And when you’ve done it before, it’s easier to stay positive,” said Parel. The 53-year-old was within one stroke of the lead after both the first and second rounds, starting 67-70, with Miguel Jimenez setting the 36-hole pace at 136. Parel didn’t make a bogey in the final round while making birdies on Nos. 3, 5, 11 and 13 to post an 11-under 205 total. While Jimenez faded to a 73 for T6, Paul Goydos became the closest challenger, finishing one stroke back after a 67. Stephen Ames, David McKenzie and Kenny Perry tied for third at 208.

CHARITY BENEFIT Proceeds from the Invesco QQQ Championship support the Sherwood Cares Foundation and The First Tee of Los Angeles. Sherwood Cares supports local causes with a focus on supporting children and families in need of medical, nutritional, education and safety assistance. PGA TOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE 2019, Part 2
