Course Insight

Royal Lytham & St. Annes was founded in 1886, with its current course dating to 1898 when it was designed by the club’s first professional, George Lowe. It was extensively redesigned by the great English architect Harry Colt in 1919. Built on essentially featureless land, the course is known for its bunkering with more than 200 bunkers dotting the layout, many having been added over the years. The club has hosted the Open Championship 11 times and the Women’s British Open five times. This is its first Senior Open Championship since it hosted the event in 1991-94. W W W.PGATOUR.COM

Miguel Ángel Jiménez became the first Spaniard to win the Senior Open Championship, prevailing by one stroke over Bernhard Langer at the Old Course in St. Andrews. Jiménez preserved his 54hole lead with a 69 in the final round for a 12-under 276 total, but it wasn’t easy down the stretch as a bogey on 15 cut his advantage to one stroke and he needed scrambling pars on the last two holes to hold on. “At that stage, I was feeling the stress. My heart was pumping really fast,” Jiménez admitted after winning his second senior major of the year (Regions Tradition). Langer finished strong with a 68, matching the best score on a windy day, for his third runner-up finish in the event to go along with three titles. Stephen Ames, Scott McCarron and Kirk Triplett tied for third at 278.

CHARITY BENEFIT

The R&A, which runs the championship along with the European Tour, invests more than £5 million each year in support of golf worldwide. In recent years there has been a focus on financing development in countries where golf is a relatively new sport.

Course Insight

En-Joie was created by George F. Johnson, owner of Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company, and designed by Ernie Smith, opening in 1927. Johnson was a huge lover of golf and wanted his employees to enjoy the game so he built the course as a recreational outlet for them. Veteran course designer Dr. Michael Hurdzan renovated the layout in 1998-99. The course was the longtime host (19712006) of the B.C. Open on the PGA TOUR and has hosted PGA TOUR Champions since 2007.

HOW BART BRYANT WON

En-Joie Golf Course, Endicott, N.Y.

Just when it looked like he might have to go to a playoff, Bart Bryant holed a 25-foot putt on the 18th hole to clinch a victory. Bryant led Michael Bradley by one stroke going to the final hole, but Bradley hit his approach shot to seven feet for a birdie that he would make—but only after Bryant’s long putt found the cup. “I’ve had putts made on me to lose before, so it’s nice to be on the other end of the stick this time,” said the 55-year-old Bryant, who also won the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open in 2013, his only other PGA TOUR Champions victory. Bryant had a final-round 65, including six birdies in a nine-hole stretch starting at No. 3, to finish at 16-under 200. Bradley closed with a 68 for a 201 total, while Tom Gillis and Marco Dawson tied for third at 203.

CHARITY BENEFIT

The DICK’S Sporting Goods Open is operated by Broome County Charities Inc., which donated more than $830,000 to charities in 2018. It funds health-care related organizations, particularly the UHS Foundation and Lourdes Hospital Foundation, and various civic organizations. PGA TOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE 2019, Part 2
