Course Insight Narita Golf Club opened in 1988 with a course designed by Taizo Kawata. It was the site of the LPGA Tour’s 2002 Cisco World Ladies Match Play Championship and an event on the Japan PGA Senior Tour in 2008 and 2010. Located in suburban Tokyo, the course is a parkland setting with tree-lined holes and strategic bunkering. W W W.PGATOUR.COM

HOW COLIN MONTGOMERIE WON

Colin Montgomerie trailed by three strokes through 36 holes and managed only an even-par 36 on the front nine of the final round before firing a 31 on the back nine to take a one-stroke victory over Billy Mayfair and Scott McCarron in the inaugural PGA TOUR Champions event in Japan. “Patience is key, even in a three-round event,” Montgomerie said. “You think it’s more of a sprint than a marathon, but you have to be patient. It’s vital in this game.” Montgomerie’s putter heated up as he birdied four of the first five holes on the back nine with putts of 20, 15, 60 and 14 feet. He added a pair of key six-foot putts, one for a par on No. 16 and one for a birdie on the 17th that gave him a one-stroke lead over Mayfair, who had finished with a 66. Second-round leader McCarron closed with a 71, rallying for birdies on the last two holes but coming up just short. The 54-year-old Montgomerie, who opened with rounds of 69-66 and finished at 14-under 202 after his closing 67, earned his fifth PGA TOUR Champions victory. The event took a oneyear break from the schedule in 2018.

Course Insight

Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed University Ridge in 1991 on a ridge overlooking the city of Madison, and the course is home to the University of Wisconsin golf teams. The front nine is wide open, rolling through a preserved prairie and marshland, while the first six holes of the back nine are cut out of a dense woodland before the course opens up again at the par-5 16th, which features three fairways and 16 bunkers. The course hosted the 1998 NCAA Women’s Championship and has been home to the American Family Insurance Championship since its 2016 inception.

Scott McCarron shot a closing 64 to beat out a pair of local residents who shot 65 in the final round, as Jerry Kelly finished one stroke back and tournament host Steve Stricker was T3 two behind. “I made only one bogey all week, and that was on Friday, just missed a short putt,” said McCarron, 52, after his seventh career PGA TOUR Champions victory. “Other than that, I really didn’t have any opportunities to make bogey. Just kept putting myself in play.” Seven players had the lead during the final round, with McCarron finally taking control on the strength of birdies on Nos. 14-16. Stricker was the first-round leader with a 64, but a 74 on Saturday was costly before he recovered in the final round. Kelly birdied four holes in a five-hole stretch on the back nine but came up just short.

CHARITY BENEFIT

The American Family Championship raised more than $2 million for charity in 2018. Approximately half of the total was distributed to the American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, with more than 80 other primarily local charities sharing the rest. PGA TOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE 2019, Part 2
