HOW TIGER WOODS WON

Tiger Woods built a three-stroke lead through 54 holes and hung on with a 71 in the final round to score his first victory since 2013 and the 80th of his career. The 42-year-old, who had been through four back surgeries—including a spinal fusion—since his last win, opened with rounds of 65-68-65 to go three ahead of Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy. Woods had never lost when holding a lead of at least three strokes going into the final round. He was helped this time by the struggles of Rose (73 to finish T4) and McIlroy (74 for T7). Woods birdied the first hole but added only one more birdie. Bogeys on 15 and 16 cut his lead to two strokes before he saved par with a four-foot putt on 17 with his closest pursuer, Billy Horschel (66), already in the clubhouse and unable to make up more ground. Rose secured the FedExCup title with a two-putt birdie on the 18th hole.  Woods played the first seven holes in 6-under on the way to a frontnine 30 and a 65 in the third round.  Woods made five putts of 20 feet or longer and ranked second in Strokes Gained: Putting (1.280 per round).  Woods ranked first in Scrambling, saving par 17 of the 24 times he missed the green in regulation (70.83 percent).
