HOW FRANCESCO MOLINARI WON

Francesco Molinari emerged from a pack of contenders with a 2-under 69 on Sunday to win at Carnoustie. Seven players had at least a share of the lead during the day, including a six-way tie at one point on the back nine. While everyone else hurt themselves with bogeys or double bogeys along the way, Molinari had 16 pars and two birdies in the final round to claim his first major championship. The 35-year-old capped a string of pars on the first 13 holes with eight-foot par-saving putts on 12 and 13, then two-putted for a birdie on the par-5 14th. Molinari birdied the 18th from five feet to move into the lead and ended up winning by two over Kevin Kisner, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele. Tiger Woods had the lead through 10 holes before a double bogey on the 11th sent him toward a 71 and a T6 finish three strokes back. Jordan Spieth entered the final round tied for first with Kisner and Schauffele but shot a 76 and finished T9 four behind. XX Molinari shot a 65 in the third round, also without a bogey, to pull within three strokes of the lead. XX Molinari was T23 in Greens in Regulation Percentage (66.67), but fifth in Scrambling. XX Molinari ranked fifth in Putting Average with 1.729 putts per green in regulation. w w w.pgatour.com
