American in his 20s, starting with Koepka’s 2017 U.S. Open title.  Fleetwood’s 63 tied the U.S. Open record previously accomplished by Johnny Miller (1973), Jack Nicklaus (1980), Tom Weiskopf (1980), Vijay Singh (2003) and Justin Thomas (2017). It was the second 63 in the final round, joining Miller.  Dustin Johnson became the 10th player to lead/co-lead through each of the first three rounds, but not win. HOW BROOKS KOEPKA WON

Brooks Koepka claimed his second consecutive U.S. Open title as he broke out of a four-way tie for the lead through 54 holes with a final-round 68 at Shinnecock Hills, winning with a 1-over 281 total. Koepka opened the championship with a first-round 5-over 75 and was 7-over for his first 25 holes before rallying for a second-round 66. A 72 in tough conditions in the third round lifted him into a share of the lead at 3-over with Daniel Berger, Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson. Tommy Fleetwood proved to be the toughest challenger, shooting a closing 63 to finish at 2-over 282 at around the time Koepka birdied the 10th hole to get to even par for the championship. A 12-foot putt for bogey on the 11th and par saves on 12 and 14 were crucial for Koepka, along with a birdie on 16 that put him back ahead by two before a harmless bogey on 18.  Koepka ranked first in Strokes Gained: Approach-the-Green (2.214 per round) and fourth in Greens in Regulation Percentage (68.06).  Koepka was third in Strokes Gained: Putting (2.214 per round), making four putts longer than 25 feet and missing only two inside seven feet.  Starting his second round on the back nine, Koepka birdied 17 and 18 then had four birdies on the front nine for a 31.
