outh Carolina long has been a magnet for golf fans and vacationers, being a state with more than 350 attractive golf courses. Of the many attractions is the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. And it’s the Ocean Course that’s the big pull. This is rated the No. 4 public golf course in the U.S. and is also ranked 25th among the “100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses,” as well as having an impressive tournament backstory. A further accolade came this year when The Ocean Course hosted the PGA Championship (May 20-23, when fans watched Phil Mickelson triumph). Those who know the course well will tell you the par-72 layout designed by Pete and Alice Dye serves as a true test of skill. Not only is the unobstructed coastal view impressive—10 holes run along the water—but the fresh breezes blowing in off the Atlantic also add to the many challenges. In addition, there are four other courses by leading designers: Osprey Point (Tom Fazio), Oak Point (Clyde Johnston), Turtle Point (Jack Nicklaus), and Cougar Point (Gary Player). In June, the resort opened additional new accommodations, four new two-story, four-bedroom cottages tucked right beside the Ocean Course clubhouse and overlooking the driving range,

with the ocean serving as the backdrop. The Cottages at the Ocean Course serve as luxury accommodations for a fully immersive and highly curated golf experience for those visiting the Ocean Course. Groups staying in the Cottages have a dedicated concierge who will stock the properties with your favorite beverages and snacks, also arranging transport, tee times, dining experiences (including exclusive private wine- or spiritspaired chef’s dinners), and other recreational activities. The new luxury Cottages are arranged with two guestrooms upstairs and two down (each with private ensuite bathrooms) with a shared living room and bar downstairs. Both floors have porches that give sweeping views of the course and the Atlantic Ocean.

A new event on the PGA TOUR schedule is always a thrilling development— especially for the local area— introducing not only new fans to the tournament but also showcasing the many golf vacation opportunities in the region. The announcement that the new Palmetto Championship at Congaree tournament (see also p.145) would take place June 10-13 created excitement in Jasper County. Governor Henry McMaster said: “We have the opportunity to tell the South Carolina success story in a new way to new people and showcase our state and its successes to the world.” During the Palmetto Championship media day at Congaree, PGA TOUR Executive Vice President Ty Votaw commented, “It’s a

great story for South Carolina, for its tourism and economic development.” As a vacation destination, Congaree has much to offer in addition to great golf opportunities. The Congaree National Park, for example, is the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the country. Bottomland hardwoods include species that thrive in forested wetlands. The short (53 miles) but wide Congaree River supports a forest wilderness trail that can be explored by boat or canoe, using a Park campground as a base either for overnight or multi-day stays. There are rangers on hand to give guidance about the area’s natural and cultural history, providing information about the people who have used the land since prehistoric times.
