Welcome

t this time of year it’s natural to reflect on the past year and to look forward to new goals and new aspirations. While in many respects we’re all eager to flip the calendar to 2021, I believe this past year taught us a lot about ourselves and our organization. Most notably, that we should never take things for granted and that we are capable of great work in the face of adversity.

Our entire world has changed over the last year due to the ongoing pandemic, and certainly the PGA TOUR as an organization has had to learn, plan, adapt and overcome significant obstacles to continue moving forward. With 26 PGA TOUR events safely under our belt since the Return to Golf in June, I’m humbled by what our team, our membership and our partners have accomplished. As one of the first professional sports back on the field of play, there was no roadmap for what we set out to achieve. But from day one, the TOUR family embraced the challenge to create a safe and responsible return to competition, inspire our loyal fans and create new ones along the way. The amazing efforts of many have allowed us to generate more than $160 million in charitable giving this year. While that number isn’t a record, it’s certainly one we can take an incredible amount of pride in this year, given the impact of the pandemic, the many cancellations across our Tours and the overall economic climate. Charity is at the heart of everything we do—no matter the circumstances—and we proudly continue to make a positive impact in supporting and improving our local communities.

Upon the PGA TOUR’s Return to Golf, the competition itself was incredibly compelling. From the Charles Schwab Challenge through the season-ending TOUR Championship where we crowned Dustin Johnson as the FedExCup champion, our ability to entertain fans led to significant increases in fan engagement; in fact, the PGA TOUR was one of the only sports to see ratings increases during this time. As we look toward 2021 and beyond, our organization—and the game of golf—look to build on the momentum created over the past year. This includes the renaissance we are experiencing from a participatory standpoint. I say often that golf is the greatest game on the planet, and we are proud of the role our industry and our athletes have played in inspiring others to take up our sport— or play more often. The PGA TOUR has been lauded as a leader in the return of professional sports and we are thankful for the contributions of so many. I’m humbled and proud to be in the seat that I’m in and privileged to lead this wonderful organization.

Sincerely, Jay Monahan Commissioner PGA TOUR
