Welcome FrOm thE EditOr

Our Year 2020 was one that many would like to wad up like a piece of paper and toss from a 10th story window. Good riddance. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted golf—a very global game—in a very big way, shutting down tournaments, causing months of inactivity, tearing up schedules and keeping fans at home. Alas, golf endured and survived. Dustin Johnson will never forget 2020, nor should he. Appearing like a cool Western gunslinger, Johnson always has been cloaked in immense talent. At 36, he blossomed, and as the 2019-20 season spun to a close, he stepped in and took it over. Two FedExCup Playoffs victories, including an 11-shot victory. His first FedExCup triumph. Player of the Year honors. Johnson opened the 2020-21 season by winning his first Masters title, setting a scoring record. There is a lot of Dustin Johnson in the pages of this Essential Guide. Honestly, there should be. He was that good. Along the lines of entertainment, is there a game more suited to gaming and gambling than golf? What 12-handicapper hasn’t stood over a 6-foot putt to win a $5 Nassau without feeling as if he was playing for his entire mortgage? This is a marriage that was natural and inevitable. Michael LoRé, Forbes.com contributor, gives readers the inside skinny on what to expect in 2021. It’s a move that should help to grow our game. The PGA TOUR is filled with incredible players who have incredible stories. Few players today carry the universal respect that Zach Johnson has earned from his peers. For his character, sportsmanship and charity work, the 2022 U.S. Presidents Cup captain was named the 2020 Payne Stewart Award recipient. Helen Ross had an entertaining visit with Johnson that you can read beginning on page 62. Finally, a short introduction, as I assume the Editor’s role from my longtime friend Bill Fields, who has been generous as a helpful guide. I’m probably a lot like you, a devoted fan of golf who has played the game a long, long time and still is trying to figure it out. I recently returned from covering my 26th Masters Tournament, which, with no patrons, was a sight to behold. From the fledgling PGA TOUR University program and on through the PGA TOUR Champions circuit, every single facet of the game manages to fascinate me. We look forward to feeding your fascination as well. Happy New Year to all. Good-bye, 2020. Here’s wishing 2021 brings you fairways, greens and renewed hope, on the course and off it.
