Media Coverage

“I thought I lost it after the second shot on 16 and made an awesome par there. I knew I needed to make a birdie on 18, and it happened to go in.” — Viktor Hovland

HOW VIKTOR HOVLAND WON

20 20

El Cameleón has an element that won’t be found elsewhere, a cenote, a naturally formed pit with limestone walls. It is incorporated into the fairway on the seventh hole, a 554-yard par 5. The pit is marked as a water hazard but with an area where it is possible to play out of sand.

Viktor Hovland of Norway celebrates with the winner’s trophy on the 18th green after the final round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic at El Cameleón Golf Club.

CHECK THIS OUT  Viktor Hovland became the first player to birdie the 72nd hole to win by one stroke at Mayakoba since the event started in 2007.  Hovland’s first PGA TOUR start was in 2018 at this event, playing as a 21-year-old amateur. He missed the cut in 2018 and 2019.  Hovland’s 128 total (63-65) for the final two rounds was the lowest ever at the Mayakoba Classic.  Carlos Ortiz was the top finisher among the players from Mexico at T8, one stroke ahead of Abraham Ancer.

Viktor Hovland made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a final-round 65 and a one-stroke victory over Aaron Wise, who was sitting in the clubhouse after a 63. Hovland birdied four of the first six holes and three of the last six, and also made a vital par on the 16th with a save on a long bunker shot.  Hovland led the field in Greens in Regulation Percentage, hitting 61 of 72 greens.  Hovland was 17-under for the week on the front nine, with three 32s and a 31.
