NEW D O W N TO W N CUISINE How the Ritz Carlton Chef Started Something Fresh and Unique Before spending time in the Caribbean as the executive chef for the Ritz Carlton group of hotels, Matt Birkenmeier, “Chef Birk” began his culinary journey at Cousin Hugo’s Bar & Grill in Maplewood. In 2015, after several years on the road, he returned home to St. Louis to take over the award-winning Quincy Street Bistro. He now finds himself as the executive chef of both Union 30 and Form Skybar at the newly opened Hotel St. Louis at 705 Olive Street Downtown. Joined by Josh Schindler and a handful of others who moved with Chef Birk from Quincy Street they have invented a menu that celebrates every small corner of St. Louis, from Cherokee Street inspired tacos to Bosnian inspired Chevapi.
Chef Birk and Josh Schindler are cooking up something special down on Olive Street with a new view and a new spin on the unique flavors of our city. Now, Restoration St. Louis – the developer behind Hotel St. Louis – plans to buy the Chemical Building next door. Planned is a $54M renovation which will add 84 hotel rooms, 72 luxury apartments, restaurant, rooftop bar and more. Developer Amy Gills has her mind and heart set on the revitalization of this downtown neighborhood – her track record proves she finishes what she starts. Stay tuned for a profile on the developer and her projects downtown.

The Meyer House is available for the first time in over 55 years. Residents of the area long remember it being a grand family home designed around entertaining. Situated on almost five-acres in Huntleigh, the home is in an international style with art deco design elements. The sundial on the front of the house, door medallions and dramatic staircase are just some of the unique Eames details. Eames even added the first few bars of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor to a brick wall on the back terrace. Follow the link to see it in detail. NEW STORY A Charity building homes across the world In 2017, Sotheby’s International Realty joined forces with New Story Charity to transform lives with new, safe homes. We chose New Story as a charitable partner because we agree with their mission that a home is the foundation for health, education, and opportunity. The Sotheby’s International Realty network has donated nearly $1M toward safe homes with New Story. This past year, we focused our donation efforts for Mexico to fund new houses for families who lost their homes in the 2017 Puebla earthquake. The houses are built in communities that will ultimately result in more than 100 structures, which equates to secure homes for about 400 people. In June 2018, we celebrated the initial groundbreaking for the first community in Morelos; now that the first two communities are nearly complete, we are setting our fundraising sights to complete the third – also in Morelos – currently under construction. In November, the SIR team visited two communities near completion – Totolapan (29 homes) and Tlayacapan (53 homes). Families in both communities are anticipated to move in by early 2019. Both communities were fully funded by Sotheby’s International Realty.

$ 10 0 AN T I QU E SO L D AT SOT HE BY ’S FO R $ 2.1 M I LLI O N A statuette bought at a Missouri garage sale for $100 auctioned off for $2.1 million at Sotheby’s It wasn’t until the owner brought the statue to Antiques Roadshow that she discovered her antique’s worth. By Brooke Semke
A Chinese Buddha statuette sold for $2.1 million at Sotheby’s New York this March—far exceeding the initial $60,00-$80,000 presale estimate. The figurine was first purchased at a Kirkwood, Missouri garage sale around 20 years ago for less than $100. Nearly 20 years after buying the figurine from the garage sale, the unnamed owner decided to take the antique on the PBS show Antiques Roadshow while the program was being filmed in St. Louis. “I almost didn’t have a chance to acquire it because I was having fifteen people for lunch,” the unnamed owner shared to the appraiser. “I rushed out and the dealers had been there for two days before.” When the Roadshow appraiser told the woman the piece could retail for anywhere between $100,000-$125,000, she responded in disbelief. “Really? Are you really serious? Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it.” 14
The bronze statue depicts one of Buddhism’s most widely worshipped deities, the god Cintamanicakra Avalokiteshvara. It is thought to have been made during the Ming Dynasty in the 15th Century. The antique piece sold just seven minutes into the bidding war at Sotheby’s New York.

M ARIE KO N D O’S 5 FAVO R IT E T H I N GS THE ORGANIZATION GURU ON THE ITEMS THAT SPARK JOY IN HER HOME Marie Kondo may be petite—4 feet, 7 inches—but she packs a real punch. That became clear when the Japanese organization wizard’s 2011 book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, became an international bestseller. Now she’s gone viral once more, thanks to Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, a TV series on Netflix. Her “KonMari Method” of decluttering is mercilessly precise yet oddly poetic (you keep the items—and only those that “spark joy”– then thank the others before tossing them out). Kondo, 34, lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two daughters. Speaking through an interpreter, Kondo describes the five items in her home that, yes, spark joy.
01 BOOKS WITH PURPOSE “I have several notebooks, each for a different purpose: one for ideas, one for dreams, one for problem solving, etc.,” Kondo says. “They’re located at the end of my bookshelf in the hallway, and I carry them with me in my purse as needed.”
A NEW MUST-HAVE “Rose water is my recent discovery. It has anti-inflammatory properties and the scent is sublime,” she says. “I keep a bottle in my bathroom and I use it primarily as a facial toner.”
03 A TREASURE FROM CHILDHOOD Fear not—the KonMari Method allows for nostalgia. Kondo demonstrates that old mementos can still serve a function, sometimes when used in new ways. “I received this sewing box for Christmas when I was a little girl,” she recalls. “It’s in my bedroom—near my vanity. I now use it to store makeup, so I get to experience the joy it brings me every day.”
04 CRYSTAL CLEAR “I admire crystals for their purification properties as well as their exquisite beauty.” Kondo says. Spiritual charms, talismans, and statues often wind up tucked away in a box or drawer, but Kondo recommends making a “personal altar” of such items in a corner or on a bookshelf.
05 GRATITUDE FROM THE GROUND UP
M.K. Sadler for KonMarl Media. Inc
“I love to wear these specific socks around the house because they keep my toes warm,” she says. And, oh yes, in case you had any doubts: “My socks are folded and rest comfortably in their designated dresser drawer.”
