A N OT E F R O M OUR LEADERSHIP

e are now 13 days into 2017. How many of us are still keeping those resolutions? Sadly, not many. According research only 8% of those who make a resolution will be successful at keeping it. Unfortunately many times I see it first hand when it comes to agents and their desire to expand their business. Two weeks into 2017 and I’ve already had many meetings with agents about postcards they would like to send, new marketing techniques they would like to use and new ideas they want to implement in their business. The trouble isn’t the resources; they have those at their disposal. The trouble is expanding their business takes time and effort. Make sure you have goals written down and that you share them with someone who can motivate and help you with them. Sometimes I meet with an agent who has no idea the marketing resources he has at his disposal and once I share them, he realizes he spent way too much effort doing it on his own. Scheduling time to increase your business in some way is sometimes overlooked. I’ve met with agents who desire to do something but won’t invest the time to get the project done. It consistently gets pushed to the back burner until the idea is burned to a crisp and no longer usable. Lastly, a key principle to remember is that patience is key. Marketing and advertising require a consistent message many times before it brings a person to act. The Rule of 7 was taught to me while in school. It takes 7 “touches” (a viewed ad, postcard, email, social media post, etc.) before someone will act. This rule is ever increasing in the age of people being able to filter messages more rapidly and easier. Make sure to give your marketing plan time to take root and people to engage with it.

FEATURE - THE VALUE OF ART

“A

uthenticity is the soul of the object,” says Chinese works of art expert Nicolas Chow, adding “Anything that is worth something is worth being faked.” In Episode 1, see how Chow and other Sotheby’s specialists identify the true originals. Sometimes consulting an artist’s catalogue raisonné is enough to affirm authenticity, but other pieces require sleuthing for clues that only a seasoned expert would think to sniff out – sometimes quite literally.
