APRIL 23, 2020

The idea that mental illness is shameful grew out of fear and ignorance about its causes, effects and treatment. Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services has been a leader in the movement to change misconceptions around mental illness, including establishing its now signature event in 1997: Erasing the Stigma Awards. Since its inception, we have honored dozens of artists, advocates, writers and other public figures who have joined us in the movement by sharing their personal stories and being strong advocates for erasing the stigma. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to gather in-person for our 24th Annual Erasing the Stigma Awards. Instead of cancelling the Awards, we hosted a virtual event to continue our tradition of raising awareness for mental health and providing opportunities to engage and connect with so many of our strong and loyal supporters. Our deep thanks and appreciation to our 2020 honorees, our mental health heroes. Because of their commitment and advocacy, there is less shame and silence around mental illness and more help and hope for those most in need.

Dear Friends, It has been a great honor to serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services over the past four years and the chair of the 2020 Erasing the Stigma Awards. Our annual event focuses attention on the importance of having positive conversations about mental health—a topic that has become a crucial concern as people worldwide struggle with the mental health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. When stay-at-home orders were issued in March, it became clear we would not be able to gather together at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for our 24th annual Erasing the Stigma Awards event. Members of the Board’s ETS Committee decided against cancelling the Awards. Instead, they opted to host a virtual event, and to launch an Erasing the Stigma Campaign to last throughout May, Mental Health Awareness Month. The campaign and virtual awards achieved several important goals: to honor our mental health heroes, to raise awareness about the importance of erasing stigma, to raise money for the services Didi Hirsch has continued to provide throughout the crisis and to keep our supporters connected to one another. During a time when people of all backgrounds are feeling isolated and anxious, we want our donors and supporters to know that they too can turn to DIdi Hirsch for resources and support. I want to thank the Erasing the Stigma Committee members and Didi Hirsch staff who have spent countless hours transitioning the annual Awards from a live event to a virtual event. I am grateful to my Leadership Co-Chairs and the entire Board of Directors for their generous investment of time and support to ensure that the Awards continued. I also want to thank the inspiring honorees, our mental health heroes, for their commitment to erasing the stigma. Thank you everyone for helping us connect in a new way this year.

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services is a leading provider of community mental health, substance use and suicide prevention services that has been transforming lives since 1942. Created to help families devastated by the Great Depression, the agency then known as LA Psychiatric Service was the first freestanding, nonprofit mental health clinic in Los Angeles. It was renamed for benefactor Didi Hirsch, a longtime Board member, after she and her husband, Kingdon, made a substantial gift to the agency in the 1970s. Today, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services serves low-income children and adults from 10 locations and 120 schools throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The agency operates five outpatient clinics, two crisis residential treatment centers, a long-term residential program for women and children, a nationally renowned Suicide Prevention Center and a suicide prevention satellite office in Orange County. In 2019, these programs helped nearly 160,000 children and adults, many in communities where poverty or stigma limits access.

Dr. Curry has testified before the California legislature and was appointed to California’s Advisory Committees on Suicide Prevention and on Stigma and Discrimination. A board member of several mental health and substance use providers’ associations, she served on the board of the National Council for Behavioral Health and is past board president of both the Los Angeles Association of Community Human Service Agencies (ACHSA) and the California Council of Community Behavioral Health Agencies (CCCBHA). Her honors include an Eli Lilly Heroes in the Fight Award from NAMI Urban Los Angeles, SHero Award from former California Senator Curren Price, Jr., and 2016 Pioneer Woman of the Year Award from Councilmember Felipe Fuentes and Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women. She also has been honored by The Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic and Southern California Psychiatric Society. With a BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in Psychology from UCLA, Kita is an award-winning poet, whose first full-length poetry collection, What Snakes Want, was published by Mayapple Press in May 2015.

Mental Health and Metaphors by Kita S. Curry, PhD

Words subtly shape and reinforce our conscious and unconscious attitudes. That’s why it’s better to say a person “died by suicide” rather than “killed themselves” or “committed suicide,” which imply suicide is a crime— echoing a belief held by many religions. Lockdown, the metaphor most commonly used to describe life during the COVID-19 pandemic, is bad for our mental health. It conveys that we are powerless and home is jail. Countless studies have found that such feelings increase the risk of depression, anger and even suicide. And in March, a rapid assessment of the impact of the pandemic found that negative emotions related to shelter-in-place directives were associated with a 4-fold increase in the risk of psychological distress. In contrast, Safer at Home conveys that home is a haven, not a prison. Seen this way, we are more likely to tap into our coping skills and seize the opportunity to create a healthy new normal: relishing time with loved ones, exploring new hobbies and connecting in richer ways than a tweet or text. In contrast, if we feel trapped, we are more likely to isolate, stay in our PJs all day and binge-watch wall-to-wall news—all a recipe for anxiety and depression. It’s not too late to begin taking advantage of this rare opportunity to stay healthy and become more connected. The need to stay busy has turned my husband into an avid chef. Walking now is an adventure: neighbors wave; chalk art lifts our spirits; and mini libraries have sprung up everywhere. Make this time count. If you don’t miss anything when Safer at Home ends, you didn’t full take advantage of what it offered.

The Awards BEATRICE STERN MEDIA AWARD Beatrice Stern was a high school English teacher and one of the first female officers in the Civil Aeronautics Administration who served on Didi Hirsch’s Board of Directors from 1972 until shortly before she died in 2011. In 2004, she received Didi Hirsch’s Erasing the Stigma Legacy Award in recognition of her advocacy and support. In 2007, she and her family established the Beatrice Stern Media Award to honor individuals who use the constructive power of media— including film, television, print, digital and social—to erase the stigma of mental illness and to influence policy.

LEADERSHIP AWARD Tipper Gore, a mental health advocate, received Didi Hirsch’s first Leadership Award in 1997 for courageously sharing her experience with depression and the treatment that helped her recover. The award honors leaders who share their stories to raise awareness about mental illness, treatment and recovery.

MENTAL HEALTH AMBASSADOR The Mental Health Ambassador Award recognizes artists who use their voices to encourage open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention so young people who are struggling feel comfortable speaking up and seeking help.

Talinda Bennington Talinda Bennington became a suicide prevention advocate after her husband, Chester Bennington of the band Linkin Park, died by suicide in 2017. Determined to prevent others in need from suffering alone, she partnered with Give an Hour and the Campaign to Change Direction to launch 320 Changes Direction—to help connect people in need with mental health resources. In May, the group hosted 320 Festival, an online event that included mental health workshops and musical performances. A frequent speaker on suicide prevention, she traveled to Geneva in 2019 to help the World Health Organization roll out its “40 seconds of action” campaign on World Mental Health Day. In September 2019, she was a featured speaker for Didi Hirsch’s 21st annual Alive & Running 5K for Suicide Prevention and did an “Instagram Takeover” to help promote the event by fielding questions from fans about suicide, selfcare strategies and mental health resources.

PRESENTER

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was elected as the World Health Organization Director-General for a five-year term in 2017. Immediately after taking office, Dr. Tedros outlined five key priorities for the Organization: universal health coverage; health emergencies; women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health; health impacts of climate and environmental change; and a transformed WHO. Prior to his election as WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012–2016 and Minister of Health from 2005– 2012, where he led a comprehensive reform of the country’s health system. All roads lead to universal health coverage for Dr Tedros, and he has demonstrated what it takes to expand access to health care with limited resources.

Erasing the Stigma Campaign Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services launched the Erasing the Stigma Campaign on April 23 to raise funds and awareness for its mental health, substance use and suicide prevention services. Extending through the end of May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, the campaign included several online activities that helped us stay connected to our donors, supporters and mental health heroes. Thanks to their support, we raised nearly $560,000 and have continued to make our lifesaving services available to the community:

Handwashing Challenge A social media activity that encouraged users to share video of themselves writing the word STIGMA on their hand, then washing it away - thereby #ErasingTheStigma and #StoppingTheSpread.

Transforming Lives Story An inspiring video about how Didi Hirsch’s Via Avanta changed the lives of two generations of women: Marie Chacon and her daughter, Christina Ortiz, now a therapist at Didi Hirsch.

Frontline Videos Several short videos from the frontlines of the pandemic featured Didi Hirsch employees providing tips and advice that anyone can use to improve mental health.

Live Concert A live-streamed concert to raise funds and awareness for the Erasing the Stigma Campaign featured Alex BoyĂŠ, our former Mental Health Ambassador and up-and-coming pop sensation Alex Freeman.

Instagram Live Two Instagram Live events hosted by Melissa Rivers and actor Nick Gehlfuss and featuring Didi Hirsch employees to discuss mental health and how to reach out for help on the Crisis Line.

You continued to inspire me throughout my childhood. You smiled as I painted ever so peacefully in your room. You giggled as grandpa swizzled me in the pool. Your presence captivated kitchen as grandma and I baked to our hearts content. My sweet Julie, your presence and your memory continue on forever. Each adventure that I embark on is your adventure. FROM OUR LEADERS

For nearly 80 years, Didi Hirsch Mental Services has provided free mental health, substance use disorder and suicide prevention resources to underserved individuals. Under Dr. Kita Curry’s leadership, the organization has nearly tripled its budget and reach. Her willingness to talk about the role that depression and suicide have played in her own life has done a great deal to dismantle the stigma that prevents many from seeking help.

I would like to extend special congratu– lations to this year’s honoree, Dr. Kita S. Curry, for her outstanding service and enduring commitment to erasing the stigma and ensuring that Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services is at the forefront of delivering equal and accessible mental health and substance use services to all communities. Dr. Curry, thank you for all you do as an inspiring leader in the mental health community.

Dianne Feinstein

Kamala D. Harris

Under the leadership of Dr. Kita S. Curry, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services has been a national leader both in treating mental illness and in working to erase the stigma of mental illness that often prevents people from seeking the help they need. Didi Hirsch’s dedicated staff and volunteers have saved lives and their services have improved the lives of more individuals and families than we will ever be able to count. At a time when our city is in great need of these services, we thank you.

I want to congratulate Dr. Curry for her work on mental health. Let’s be clear: Our mental health is just as important as our physical health. For too long, people have been battling mental illness alone because of fear of judgement by others. Every one of us is either directly or indirectly affected by mental illness. We need to both expand healthcare access to ensure people have proper mental healthcare, and we need more people like Dr. Curry who are on the frontlines actively working to remove societal stigma so that people feel safe seeking help.

I feel extremely grateful that the country’s first and most comprehensive Suicide Prevention Center is in my district, the 3rd District of Los Angeles County. She deserves our deep gratitude.

When she laid the foundation for this premiere organization, Didi Hirsch wanted to care for “the mind as well as the heart.” Dr. Kita Curry has taken up that mantle with courage and love. As my appointee to the Los Angeles County Mental Health Commission and throughout her tenure at Didi Hirsch, Dr. Curry consistently erased stigma by highlighting her own history of battling depression, losing family members to suicide, and providing mental health services to the most vulnerable in our community. Kita, my heartfelt gratitude for your life of service.

Dr. Kita S. Curry is an exquisite lady that leads by example and has been personally touched by the issues that she advocates. As a victim of child abuse herself, she has experienced the darkness of depression but with help and support, found the strength to soar as an eagle and has been a champion for Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services for more than a decade.
