Staff Changes Retirement — Paul Copley Paul was our Grounds Supervisor and left us after 28 years service. We thank Paul for all his hard work over the years and now he has more time to spend on his own garden/allotment. Dan Furby who joined the council in April 2016 will be taking over the role of Grounds Supervisor. Good luck Dan in your new role. We wish Paul a long and happy retirement.

Play Areas Ladygrove Park During the unseasonably windy weather earlier this month a tree came down in Ladygrove. The Council has a contract with a company to ensure the safety of all our trees. The Town Council was alerted to the issue and sent staff down to inspect on the same day. The contractor has now made the tree safe.

Play Areas Marsh Rec Not long until the newly refurbished Marsh Rec reopens. The refurbishment is nearing completion and the Town Council is working currently with the installer to ensure that everything is in top shape before it is opened to the public. Looking at the new play equipment that has been installed we are sure that you will agree that it will be worth the wait and we thank you for your patience.

Mendip The play area at Mendip Heights is currently being dug up and returned to grass. The reason for this is that Didcot Town Council will shortly no longer be responsible for the land and needs to return it in the condition in which it was originally taken on. Users of the play area are encouraged to use the new alternative play area on Great Western Park.

John Eldridge Awards—Calling for Nominations “Thank you.” Two simple words that make a big difference We’re asking people to nominate a Didcot based group or individual who has given their time and effort for the benefit of others, whether it is charity work, volunteering for a club or society or just being a good citizen and going that extra mile to help the people of Didcot. Mrs Jean Eldridge donated the John Eldridge award following her husband’s death whilst serving as Deputy Mayor of Didcot in 1992. It was felt appropriate to found an award in his name to recognise voluntary work undertaken in Didcot. If you would like to nominate somebody for the 2016/17 awards please submit nominations to events@didcot.gov.uk. The closing date is Friday 16th June 2017. The only criteria for being nominated are that the individual or group must be based in Didcot or their work is for the benefit of the people of the town, and they cannot be paid for doing it.

Didcot Town Council Ladygrove Lakes Last year the Ladygrove Lakes were closed under advice from the Environment Agency due to a high concentration of blue-green algae which posed a danger to people and animals. The Town Council has been proactive in taking steps to prevent this from happening again and has commissioned a natural bacterial treatment to increase the oxygen levels in the Lakes, thereby inhibiting the growth of the algae. The treatment commissioned is only one part of the solution, however, and the Town Council needs your help to ensure that the Lakes remain open. As the Lakes are ‘closed’, they are not cleansed by new water coming in on a regular basis. This allows things that cause the Lake to stagnate to build up. One of the biggest contributors to blue-green algae is bread in the water. We do ask that if you wish to feed the ducks down at the Lakes that you do not feed them bread as it is not good for them, and it introduces a lot of negative things to the Lakes. Instead, please consider feeding them veg, grapes or grains or any of the other things listed below, and do so away from the Lake itself. Thank you for your help in keeping the Lakes a resource that we can all enjoy!

Some Articles from the Neighbourhood Policing (May 2017) Shed Break-ins There has been a huge increase in the number of sheds on allotments around Didcot and Hagbourne that have been broken into. On some occasions items have been stolen and on other extensive damage has been caused. High visibility patrols have been increased in the offending areas and this matter has been publicised in local press. If you have any knowledge of offenders then please come forward by calling 101 or if you would like to remain anonymous you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Sheds are an easy target because security is usually very basic and the contents easy to steal. Make sure you keep your sheds in good condition, use padlocks and alarms, property mark and chain down items inside and fit grills/mesh to windows to slow down thieves. Parking Unfortunately this is something that the Neighbourhood Policing Team receive numerous complains about, with road works and the closing down of both council car parks in Didcot, the Broadway appears to have become a long stay car park. Could we please remind people that parking on Broadway is only for 30 minutes and double yellow lines need to be adhered to. Parking regulations are ignored on a daily basis on the junction of Vicarage Road and Broadway. There is a reason for the restriction and ignoring it makes it dangerous for pedestrians. Anti-social behaviour (ASB) There has been reports of ASB around the Orchard Centre and Ladygrove Park, please be vigilant if you see such behaviour and report this matter to the police either on 999 or 101 depending on the urgency of the call. ASB in parks does lead to criminal damage to equipment which then effects other park users and their children. We will be continuing with high-visibility patrols to try and deter this behaviour.
