Health & Fitness

Beware the Fat Burning Zone

S

tep on most cardio machines at the gym and you’ll see a fancy graph that will show you what sort of pace and heart rate to work at to burn the most fat. If you’ve ever worked in this fat burning zone you’ve probably thought it isn’t actually that hard and you’d be right to question whether it was the best way to lose the most weight. In short, the theory of the fat burning zone is that at a specific intensity (difficulty) your body will be using a higher percentage of fat for energy. This is flawed straight away as the fat burning zone equates to a moderate level of difficulty, and therefore will not burn more calories overall than a hard workout! So for example if you spend half an hour in the fat burning zone and burn 200 calories, 70% of which come from fat then you’ve used up 140 calories worth of fat. If on the other hand you ignore the fat burning zone and work harder so you burn 250 calories, but although only 60% comes from fat, you’ve still burned 150 calories worth of fat. (figures are just examples!) Incidentally the time when fat actually contributes the most to our energy requirement is when we’re not exercising. As harder workouts (interval training or lifting weights) causes you to burn more energy when at rest, going above the fat burning zone causes you to burn more fat overall! There is another problem with the fat burning zone, linked to the sheer ingenuity of the human body! Because humans are extremely good at surviving, and one of the keys to survival is to use

energy more conservatively... while this helps us stay alive in times of famine, it doesn’t help us to keep the waistline slim when food is aplenty! Because we are built to adapt, whenever we exercise in a way that predominantly uses a source of energy (fat) we actually become more efficient at using it for energy. In other words if it normally takes 60-minutes of exercise at 6/10 intensity level to burn 300 calories of fat, we quickly adapt to actually burn less fat at the same level. The solution is high intensity training which can involve either short sprints or lifting weights. You may have seen this on TV recently and the premise is that be using up all of the sugars stored in the muscle when you’re exercising, you’ll start to use more fat in order to replace the sugars and also when you eat your body will favour storing the energy as sugar in the muscle rather than fat!

If you’d like to take advantage of a free consultation to find out how to incorporate these principles into your lifestyle then call me on 07500 787 462!

Spring Cleaning: It’s that time again!

S

pring Cleaning is an old tradition. The days get longer, the weather gets milder and we have a burst of energy encouraging us to tackle the layers of dirt which have built up in our homes over the winter. Flinging open the windows to the fresh air and attacking the house is something many people find very therapeutic. However, the historic reason for spring cleaning is no longer with us. When houses were heated by wood and coal fires, by the end of the winter all surfaces - furniture, walls, curtains, etc would have built up a layer of soot and ash. With modern heating, this no longer happens. We may not suffer from soot, but nowadays many of us suffer from the problem of too little time to manage household cleaning efficiently. Many of us turn to professionals. Cleaning businesses and franchises are a growing market and we can now choose from people to clean our homes, our ovens or our carpets to name just a few! If you are doing the cleaning yourself, it is a good idea to take some tips from the professionals and organise the cleaning in an efficient way. No professional firm of cleaners would schedule in the cleaning for ‘one Saturday when there’s nothing much else happening’. Set aside a definite time for your cleaning and then work until you’ve finished. Don’t stop to make phone calls or watch the TV. Wear old comfortable clothes and make sure you have all the equipment

16 Dickens Heath Directory

you need - and then carry it from room to room with you. As we have all become wealthier, with more goods in our homes, you could say that the main enemy today is not soot, but clutter. Even if employing professional cleaners, they cannot sort out your clutter for you. So be ruthless! William Morris once said ‘Have nothing

Although we have less time, we do not seem to have lost our enthusiasm for cleaning. The volume and variety of cleaning products on the market seems to grow each year - and often unfortunately just makes us feel guilty if our homes don’t meet the standards seen on television adverts or in magazines. We spend up to £240 million each

in your home which you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful’. Throw out what you don’t use or give it to a charity shop. Clear surfaces and cupboards and then only put back what you need or value. Don’t forget the garage or the wardrobes either! Enlisting help from family members will make the work much quicker. It has been said that two people can change a bed four times faster than a single person. So plan a set date and get them all to help.

year in the UK on household cleaning products in an attempt to find less labour intensive ways of achieving the perfect home. Rather than spring cleaning, perhaps we would all be better off if we organised an efficient way to keep our houses clean all year round. If being in your own home gets you down because of the mess and clutter then do something about it! Either get some professional help or set up a realistic plan which you and your family can stick to and your home will be a much calmer place.

Financial Tips

PENSIONS!

A

long with buying a house, organising your pension is probably the biggest financial decision to be made – yet many people give it little thought. The earlier the issue is addressed the better otherwise the final outcome will be a pension pot much smaller than the amount needed to provide an adequate income for retirement. As a rough guide the percentage of earnings going into your pension pot should be half your age when you start saving ie 10% at 20 years old or 20% at age 40! This may be made up of your contribution plus that of your employer. The state pension is being changed from 2017 when a single flat rate of about £155 per week (£144 in today’s money) will be introduced. Anyone receiving a pension under the current

system will not benefit from the higher rate when it is introduced in 2017. Those who have built up an entitlement to a state second pension before the new system starts, will retain their rights to the extra money accrued. However, the top-up above the new flat rate will only increase each year in line with inflation as measured by the consumer price index (CPI) rather than the retail price index (RPI). From 2017, 35 years qualifying NICS or credits must be accrued to receive the full state pension up from the current 30 years. Those with fewer than 35 years will receive a proportionately reduced amount equating to £4.11 for each year missed. Those with fewer than 10 years will not receive any pension payment. Looking after young children and caring for sick or disabled adults will all continue to qualify for pension credits – a big help for those who miss out on years of employment. If you want to have an additional pension and are not in an employer final salary scheme then you need to consider now best to save for that, either using a pension or ISA’s – these will be the subject of my next article.

Mothers Day

Thank you Mum Sunday March 10th is Mother’s Day so go on...spoil her a bit.

I

n Britain Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. It’s the day when children give their Mother a card, flowers or a gift to show their appreciation for all her hard work. Like so many of our best loved traditions the origins of Mothering Sunday are a little hazy. Its earliest origins in this country seem to be entwined with the church. Most Sundays in the year churchgoers worship at their nearest Parish or ‘Daughter’ church. Centuries ago it was deemed important that people returned to their ‘home’ or ‘Mother’ church once a year. This pilgrimage took place in the middle of Lent. Historians believe that this annual return to the

Mother church led to the tradition of children particularly those in domestic service who could be as young as ten - being given the day off to visit their mother and family. Those who walked home through the countryside picked posies of flowers to present as small gifts. Most countries have declared a special day on which to honour mothers. Across the English Channel the French call their day Fête des Mères. This takes place in May and was inaugurated by Napoleon and made official in 1950. In the United States, Australia and New Zealand Mother’s Day is also celebrated in May. It was originally organised by Julia Ward Howe, a women’s rights activist who also wrote the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. In China, Mother’s Day is the only Western tradition which has official Government support. The Women’s Alliance of the People’s Republic of China uses the day to promote filial respect for parents countrywide. Carnations are the Chinese gift of choice. Mother’s Day in Ethiopia is called Antrosht. It has no fixed date because it occurs at the end of the rainy season - around the end of October. Children visit their parents bringing the necessary ingredients for a meal. Everyone sings songs in celebration of the family. How will you say thanks to your mum this year? Here are a few ideas. • Buy a card or gift from Perfect Party – Just moved next door to Tesco on DH Main Street. • Take her for a meal at Giovanni’s • Buy her a nice coffee and a cake in The Coffee Cloud • Or take her to boot camp with the guys from CRE8 • Treat her to a facial or massage at Utopia Beauty • Or pay to have the oven cleaned for her!!

Parish Council News

T

he Parish Council meets at 7.30pm, on the third Tuesday of every month (except December), in the Parish Rooms, Waterside, off Rumbush Lane. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 20th November 2012 and then Tuesday 11th December 2012, please come and join us!

Grand Opening of the Village Clock The Mayor of Solihull, our Blythe Councillor Ken Hawkins, will be performing the opening ceremony for the village clock. This will be taking place on Saturday March 23rd between 9.45am and 10.15am. Everyone welcome!

Table Tennis Club in the Parish Rooms The table tennis table has arrived in the Parish Rooms - a generous donation that Colebridge Table Tennis Club facilitated. Colebridge are the largest table tennis club in the West Midlands, and they have offered to assist in setting up a club in Dickens Heath. All interested residents are invited to a meeting in the Parish Rooms, Waterside, on Saturday March 9th 2013 at 10am – to discuss when you would like to play and how you would like the club to be run, whether you wish to have fun and a cuppa, or get better at playing table tennis with the help of coaching.

Flooding in Dickens Heath At the time of writing this, the Parish Council is expecting to receive feedback at the end of February meeting - as to why the flooding occurred and the procedures that need to be put in place to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. Several senior Solihull MBC officers are due to attend to answer residents’ questions. This information will then be made available on the Parish Council website: www.dickensheathpc.org.uk

Youth Facility The Parish Council recently met with Chris Barr of Solihull MBC to discuss realistic options for a youth facility in the village. A variety of different options were discussed, for plots of land – which included both privately owned and Borough

26 Dickens Heath Directory

Council owned. There is no easy solution, but the Parish Council are now very hopeful that one of the options can be taken forward. Solihull MBC need a little more time to begin negotiations. As soon as we can, we will invite residents to get involved.

Solihull Local Plan The Independent Examination of the Solihull Local Plan (which includes 3 Dickens Heath sites for proposed future development) has been taking place. A Parish Councillor has attended several of the ‘Hearings’ sessions to again object to the inclusion of the Cleobury Lane site, which is currently Green Belt.

Parking Problems The complaints and photos of inconsiderate parking continue to come in. Solihull MBC have put forward proposals that should improve the safety of the roads in the village. This will be going out to public consultation very soon – with information distributed to all residents, as well as a display in the library.

Garden Squares Phase 2 The latest update we have in respect of the final phase of development is that negotiations with regard to a purchaser are ongoing with the administrators. We will continue to monitor this and are in regular contact with Solihull MBC Richard Holt, Chairman Contact Us: If you would like to get in touch, please contact Parish Clerk – Helen Marczak on 07772 469271, by emailing dickensheathpc@hotmail.com, or at 1 Wharf House, Waterside, Dickens Heath, Solihull B90 1UE.

Book Review CHILD 44 by Tom Rob Smith In Stalin's Soviet Union, crime does not exist. But still millions live in fear.

T

he mere suspicion of disloyalty to the State, the wrong word at the wrong time, can send an innocent person to his execution. Officer Leo Demidov, an idealistic war hero, believes he's building a perfect society. But after witnessing the interrogation of an innocent man, his loyalty begins to waver, and when ordered to investigate his own wife, Raisa, Leo is forced to choose where his heart

truly lies. Then the impossible happens. A murderer is on the loose, killing at will, and every belief Leo has ever held is shattered. Denounced by his enemies and exiled from home, with only Raisa by his side, he must risk everything to find a criminal that the State won't admit even exists. On the run, Leo soon discovers the danger isn't from the killer he is trying to catch, but from the country he is trying to protect. Child 44 is Tom Rob Smith’s debut novel and he has since followed it up with The Secret Speech and Agent 6. It is an action packed book that travels across the Soviet Union giving insights as to the conditions and daily lives of the time. It is inventive, edgy and gripping from beginning to end.

Recipe Time

Little Mo’s Classic Menu Fanny Craddock Style!

To Start… Fromage Feuillete (baked cheese puffs) Ingredients for two. Four 5” squares of very thinly rolled 3 minute puff pastry 1oz flour 1oz butter pint of milk 4 egg whites 2 egg yolks 1 oz finely grated gruyere or emmenthal 1 oz finely grated parmesan Salt, pepper & mustard to season

To make:- Soften butter in a small pan, add the flour, stir until a smooth paste. Add milk and mixed cheeses gradually, beating well between each addition. Add generous pinch salt, pepper and dry English mustard. Remove from the heat, beat in egg yolks singly, fold in fairly stiffly whipped egg whites ad turn into four buttered individual heat resistant bowls which have been lined out with the four paste squares. Then bend the 4 corners inwards slightly and brush with a little milk or beaten egg. Bake at gas mark 6, centre shelf for about 20/25 minutes…. Serve immediately and enjoy!

For Mains... Caneton a l’Orange (duck with orange sauce) Ingredients 2 carrots, cut into 2cm pieces 2 shallots, quartered 1 bay leaf 1 orange, quartered 1 duck, (about 1.5kg-1.75kg in weight) For the orange sauce 100 g caster or granulated sugar 2 tbsp water 2 oranges, zest only 250 ml orange juice 75 g butter 1 orange, finely sliced A teaspoon of Brandy is also optional!

Method - For the duck: preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Scatter the carrots, two-thirds of the shallots, the bay leaf and half the orange quarters over the bottom of a roasting tin, squeezing the orange quarters gently to release some juice into the tin. Stuff the remaining shallot and orange quarters inside the cavity of the duck then sit the duck on top of the vegetables in the tin. Roast the duck for about 1 hour 15 minutes, basting every half an hour, until the duck is cooked through. Remove the duck from the oven and pour the cooking juices into a bowl (if you like, you can press the cooked vegetables from the roasting tin through a sieve into the cooking juices to extract as much flavour as possible). Keep the duck warm. For the orange sauce: tip the sugar and water into a medium, heavy-based saucepan and set over a low heat. Swirl the pan the help the sugar melt (do not use a spoon or other utensil to stir the sugar or it will crystallise) then allow the sugar to bubble for about 2 minutes until it starts to caramelise. As soon as it turns a dark golden brown colour, remove it from the heat and carefully pour the duck cooking juices, the orange zest and orange juice into the caramel (take care because the caramel can spit and splutter at this stage). Return the pan to a medium-high heat and simmer for about 15 minutes until the sauce is reduced to a pouring consistency. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper then gradually whisk the butter into the sauce. Stir in the orange slices and heat through very gently. To serve, carve the duck and serve it with the orange sauce, some boiled new potatoes and baby carrots… enjoy.

For Dessert... Marcedoine de Fruits Rafraichi (French fruit salad) Strictly speaking this is not a recipe as such but a basic method that can be adapted to any fruit salad mixture. Take a large necked jar, preferably one that can be taken straight to the table. Cover the base of the container with a layer of one prepared fruit, dust with sifted icing sugar and repeat with all remaining layers of chosen fruit. Finish with a dusting of sift icing sugar then pour over the top 2 tablespoons per pound of fruit used the liqueur of your choice which is most flattering to the fruit you have used. If you want to you can use the left over juice from the can/tinned fruit instead of alcohol. In either case though leave overnight in the fridge so the fruit can soak it all up. Tip – before using fruit like bananas, apples, pears and peaches always sprinkle with lemon juice and rest for 10 minutes before layering, this stops the fruit going brown. Summer Fruits suggested are :- Cherries, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Apricots, Melon, Strawberries. Autumn :- Pears, Grapes, Plums, Peaches, Blackberries. Winter:- Apples, Bananas, Oranges, Grapes, Melon A few suggested Marriages for liqueurs are: Kirsch – with plums, blackcurrants, strawberries, cherries. Peach Brandy – peaches, nectarines Apricot Brandy – with apricots, nectarines. Maraschino – with grapefruit, oranges Brandy – peaches, pears, cherries. Grand Marnier – with raspberries, apricots, pears, peaches, melon

COUNCILLOR’S NEWSLETTER

I

Helping First Time Buyers

know that times are hard for young people trying to buy their first home. In Solihull borough and nearby there are reasonably priced flats that would make good starter homes, but often first time buyers find they cannot afford the crucial deposit to enable them to get a mortgage. In the last few years this has been made harder as banks and building societies have restricted their lending to a lower proportion of the overall property price. The old 105% mortgages that enabled first-time buyers to purchase and furnish a home seem to have disappeared and 100% lending is extremely rare, if non-existent. All too often, young people are faced with finding 20% or more of the property’s price. This means that many will be well into their 30s before they can afford a place of their own, unless they have family gifts or loans towards the deposit. Before we get too downhearted over this, it is worth scanning through the financial pages of the national press and price comparison websites which are regularly updated. I made a quick online check
