Fall Sports 2013 who graduated, Trenton also lost Karley McCollum, who was on the team a year ago, to a knee injury. That leaves Schmidt as the team’s only returnee. On a team with no seniors, Schmidt will step into a leadership role. “Lauren is much more experienced having last season under her belt, Austin said. “Her game has gotten a lot better. It helped her playing with those girls who were much more experienced than she was last year. They did a good job of helping her with the mental parts of it, just staying calm and not getting easily rattled. I think that experience is really key for her. She is playing very well right now and we hope she just continues that and continues to get better as we go. We lost Karley, our other returning state golfer, to a knee injury and that hurts us a little, so we are really going to lean on Lauren for leadership. Lauren and her teammates haven’t worked out a lineup yet as all six golfers have had their moments in practice. With the youth of the team, several, if not all, of the players will see some varsity time this season. “All the girls have really shined at different points in practice so far, Austin said. “They all have a lot of room to keep improving, but they are all pretty even right now. parison to going out and playing some holes and turning in some numbers. That’s something we will be doing soon. While there is a mountain of work to be done for the young, inexperienced squad, Austin says the group is improving daily and having fun doing so. “It is pretty fun having the younger girls because you can see the improvement and you can see things click with time when you explain something to them, Austin said. “When you combine that with just the excitement they have coming out here and playing something that is new to them it’s a lot of fun. It’s just a little bit different dynamic than what we are used to seeing. The Trenton girls opened the season with tournament play on Thursday, competing at the St. Joseph-Lafayette Tournament. Trenton will return to the links on Tuesday for their first dual of the season, a road date with Brookfield.
