Swimming Complex [ 5th year studio] Teamwork project Location:

Iași, RO

Description: The site is locaded in Iasi’s industrial area, very close to the student campus and its sport complex. Due to these factors, the proposal includes a pedestrian bridge over the river to ensure an easy acces for the students and citizens.

The main idea of the project was to create a space for both categories: athletes and amateurs. The complex was placed in the middle of the site, with two parking areas, one for spectators and one for athletes and a sport area behind the construction. Therefore the swimming complex becomes an activator of this neighborhood, that stands out easily and also marks the developement of a new kind of spaces in this industrial area.

The main concept of this proposal was to separate the functions in two main volumes, each of them being represented by a different geometry: a rounded shape structure for the pools area and a rectangular one for the additional spaces.

Site

The site is situated in the industrial area of the city, very close to the student campus and Tătărași South neighborhood. It benefits by a flat terrain and it’s easily accessible being very close to one of the main streets and the river.

Access

Being dedicated to both, athletes and amateurs, the complex has two kinds of access and two parking areas. A pedestrian bridge was proposed to link the student’s sport centre to this complex, therefore generate an easy access from this part of the city.

View

The main volume of the construction is the rounded shape that containes the swimming pools. It’s glazed facade is oriented to the neighborhood, to attract more people to the compelx.

The rounded shape volume simulates the form of a wave with an entirely glazed facade, so the pools and also, the competitions, can be seen from outside. The rectangular volume, unlike the first one, is more opaque, with a different geometry that marks the main access and the secondary ones. The complex is dedicated not only for competitions but also for all-day use and has an easy access being realtively close to the centre of the city.

Public

The areas around the swimming complex are designed to function independently, therefore, in the front of the building there is a big park that will attract people, even if there are not competitions and behind the construction are sport grounds for tennis and basketball.

Orientation

The swimming pool volume is manly oriented to the North, so the water reflection of the sun does not affect the athletes or the audience.

Result

The final result is represented by a complex volume that becomes a mark of this area and generates a starting point for the reactivation of this industrial zone.


Public spaces The audience seats are disposed at the first level, with four exits and a foayer/bar oriented to the South with great perspectives to the sport terrains behind the building.

Aerial View

The new volume integrates in this industrial area, becoming a green oasis that in the future will generate a revitalization of this neighborhood.

Transparency

The rounded shape volume is mainly made of glass that leaves the wood structure visible and its North orientation protects the athletes and the audience form the sunshine.

Structure For the cover of the swimming pool laminated wood structure was used, being the most environmentally friendly construction materials, not only because it is a sustainable resource and easy to recycle in the future, but also because of the great performance characteristics which wood demonstrates in high humidity conditions. The structure, resembling lancet arches, is formed by three hinges of laminated wood arcs that from a pair of curved crossbars which are used as bearing elements.

Interior

This geometric design of the facade, where glass and stainless steel panels were used, is reminiscent of ripples of waves on the surface of water.

Structure

Laminated wood structures do not require additional finishing and give the interior a distinctive look and warmth.

Location:

Oradea, RO

Description: The site is locaded in the proximity of Oradea’s Old Square and is surrounded by old buildings, among which “Black Eagle” Palace, one of the most important monument in the country, in Secession Style.

The main idea of the project was to create a different volume, one that stands out easily in this area, where the old architecture prevails, and to benefit from being so close to the water. Therefore, the new building is situated in the middle of the site; its “C” form generates the idea of privacy, while the left and right sides are inclined so they lead towards the site.

“The pocket�

The proposed pedestrian walkway along the river aims to create a more interesting path along the water and to attract more people in this side of the building, where all the public activities are: bar, caffee, restaurants and a big pool verry close to the river.

Refresh

From an urbanistic point of view, for the new proposal the old park was kept but re-disigned. Most of the trees have been cut, for a better visibility, and in their place were planted small shrubs and wifi trees.

Overview

The volume benefits from a gradual increase, thus ensuring a low height near the synagogue, while at the highest point it’s reaching almost the same height as its neighbors.

Facade

The facade is made mainly of glass, metal and wood, modern materials that make the volume easy to stand out. Using such a large proportion of glazed surfaces was done to mirror the old buildings and the valuable architecture around.


Urban Regeneration of a community [ Multi-Comfort House - Contest] Description: The contest’s task was to develop a vision for the Urban Regeneration of the community inhabiting the two indicated buildings by proposing a solution for the constructions as well as for the surrounding areas. The main scope of the project was to increase the wellbeing of the inhabitants while making the area more desirable and attractive for new, young families, considering the overall sustainable approach of the rehabilitation process.

Considering these, the main idea of the project was to rehabilitate the old buildings, add new apartments for the new families without affecting the old ones, move the parking spaces underground and reactivate the space between the buildings and the nearby park. N

The main idea of the project was to rehabilitate the constructions without affecting the lives of the people that live there, therefore the new flats were added as new volumes on top of the old constructions.

Interior Rehabilitation

Taking into consideration that the residents are mainly represented by eldery and the fact that this generation is highly attached to its belongings, the proposal didn’t affect the interior spaces very much. The main idea was to reconfigure the interior spaces while the residents are still living in the apartment. Therefore by adding the new stairs and the elevators, new balconies were created, whose hanging plants help reduce the noise, polution and sunshine. The newly added glass volumes that include 18 duplex apartments for young families, are disposed on top of the old constructions. To highlight the difference between the old buildings and the new ones, different CIUDAD PEGASO materials such as glass, metal and wood were used. The South facade has a sunshade system that protects the apartments from overheating in the summer time. The park to which it is oriented has a new layout with three entrances and a children area, all of them dedicated to the residents.

The created space between the buildings was transformed in a semipublic courtyard for the residents, a social place towards which many of the flats are oriented.

Description: The site is located in Păcurari neighborhood, a quiet place near the centre of the city and has in its proximity a mid-centrury monument house. The main concept was to separate the private and public spaces and create a compact volume by using a customised module to create a building suitable for a community. The big slab that separates the ground floor functions and the flat area becomes a semi-public space for inhabitants and also a green screen for the noise an polution from the street. The site also has a big slope, which offers great perspectives over the town, so many of the spaces within the new building are directed to the South.

The core basis of the project derives from the assimilation of surrounding information and the concept of community. The repetitive use of modules allows the developement of a concept in a diverse and adaptable direction. In an eterogeneous context like the one the site is located in, modulation is the one abstract gesture through which an authentic architecture can be attained. The slab, on which the building is disposed, segregates the public space from the private one and the vegetation on it creates a green screen, specifically from the street, to block the noise and the polution. The inhabitants benefit from diverse and pleasant spaces, like the different balconies afferent to each flat and the common domain represented by the green terrace which holds the apartments.

Site The site benefits from a slope relief, which offers spectacular views over the city. To benefit from it at the underground floor there is a gym and a pool that has a direct perspective over the town.

2 x Cubes The second layer adds 6 more cubes representig the second and third level of the building.

Public Space The ground floor is mainly occupied by public spaces such as a library, coffee shop and book store, all of them disposed in glass volumes to keep sight of the city behind the building.

3 x Cubes The third and last layer of cubes adds 6 more cubes which represent the third and forth floor.

Segregation Over the ground floor, a big concrete slab separates the public spaces and the private ones. This floor is used by the community that lives here and the plants on it create a green screen that blocks the noise and the polution from the street.

Tetris From the intersection of the three layers of cubes results a compact volume, with many terraces and great perspectives over the city.

1 x Cubes The first layer of 10 cubes represents the first and second floor, their link creates three apartments, all of them having a great view and benefit of natural light.

Final The result is organised in a functional and logical structure, where the community plays the main role.


Public spaces The ground floor is represented mainly by public spaces, conceived for people who are especially interested in reading, or studying. These type of activities require a more peaceful scenery, which is beneficial for higher residential levels.

Town Overview

The volume created cosists of both public and private spaces, both mainly oriented to the South, to benefit from natural light and a great overlook of the town, given by the site’s slope.

The volume stands out by its authentic concept in which the module has the main role. The modern materials used and the green terraces with colorful trees and plants add an extra impact to the building.

To add an extra isulation, the building is lifted form the ground and placed on a I profile steel structure. The building features environmentally friendly materials and has a small footprint. Compact, simple and bulit with easy materials the construction can be placed on wheels and transported anywhere

Workflow: - once they are linked, any change that is made in Revit will quickly be seen in Lumion window. - there is a closer resemblance between Lumion and Revit materials, makes it possible to manipulate the materials from within Revit to synch to the render engine. - you’re not allowed to edit materials that are being live synched, even when the synch is switched off - this way is easier to navigate the model while designing

Benefits: - very good feedback tool - every change is automatically and instantly updated

Disadvantages: - once the model is finished, it has to be exported and materials may be applied as usual - architectural entourage is not transferred at all ( no trees, cars, people from Revit)

Contrast

Covering a total of 20 square-metre area, the building coated by black-sheets - hipped roof and large windows create a contrast with sunlight reflection throughout the day.

Benefiting from it’s simple architecture, the tiny house preserves the natural beauty of the landscape, featuring environmentally friendly materials and having a small footprint.

Slic3r - tool that can convert a 3D model into printing instructions for the printer. In this program you can adjust the structure inside the model, so the printer can use more or less material, taking into consideration that this can affect the stability of the model.

This print has 2 types of structure: liniar( top/buttom fill pattern) and “Honeycomb�(fill pattern). Time of the print: ~5 hours Quality: Good. Due to the fact that the model is quite small and the filament was thicker, the print came out irregularly in some areas to (walls&roof).

Throughout the undergraduate studies; the idea of design has been emphasized numerously by various professors and mentors. The idea being: design is life; we should always be thinking about how we live and how it can be integrated into the design process. First year’s projects were mainly drawn and gradually, as we started working on the computer, it was crucial to keep a journal handy, to record every thought process of the designer.


Sketching What do architectural drawings do? Convey visual information about the design of buildings. They are all about communicating ideas, whether it’s solving initial design problems or working through ideas and details with colleagues or clients.
