ABRIGO GIOVANNI

Abrigo farm has a long, family tradition in wine production. It is a family-run company located in Diano d'Alba (about 8 km. from Alba), a small village located on the top of a hill (500 meters above sea level). The economy of this small village is linked to Dolcetto wine, which has here a specific DOC related to the Municipality of Diano d’Alba, a territory intended to affirm its value through the delicacy and elegance of its “Söri” (best vineyards).The company has 8 ha. of vineyard and 10 ha. of hazel groves. In this wonderful hilly area the family produces 4 DOC wines and the best hazelnuts of Piedmont IGP. The high quality of the wines depends on the rigorous selection of grapes, on a careful wine-making techniques and on specific refinement and ageing methods. There is no previously established formula for ageing: the method and the amount of time required to exalt each wine’s greatest potential are decided upon year by year, keeping in mind each wine’s special characteristics.

ADRIANO MARCO E VITTORIO

The “AZIENDA AGRICOLA ADRIANO MARCO e VITTORIO” farm is a family-run company, situated in the heart of the prestigious Langhe hills and produces its wines exclusively from its own grapes. At the beginning of the 20th century, Giuseppe, the grandfather, who was share-farmer, started his activity of growing grapes. Later on, he purchased a small farm and together with his son Aldo, expanded the family property planting new vines. From that moment on, the activity has grown gradually even thanks to the involvement of his two grandsons, MARCO and VITTORIO. They introduced some significant changes such as the wine-making and the bottling of their own production and established the new AZIENDA AGRICOLA ADRIANO MARCO e VITTORIO. All the works in the vineyards, are entirely made by the members of the family, with great respect to the ecological standards, to obtain a genuine product for the consumers. For the ageing, the cellar holds oak barrels and steel tanks. All the wines produced by the “AZIENDA AGRICOLA ADRIANO MARCO e VITTORIO” farm are sold in Italy and abroad as well through importers. Actually the winery owns 20 hectares of vineyards cultivated with NEBBIOLO for BARBARESCO, BARBERA D’ALBA, DOLCETTO D’ALBA, SAUVIGNON and MOSCATO. Barbaresco DOCG Sanadaive

AGOSTINO PAVIA & FIGLI

Agostino Pavia & Figli is a small family company in the heart of the Barbera d’Asti production area. On about 9 hectares of vineyards extending over gentle slopes around the farmhouse, all located in the area of Agliano Terme, the winery produces 3 crus: Bricco Blina, Moliss and La Marescialla. The story of the family runs alongside that of the development of the Barbera d’Asti DOC (DOCG from 2008 vintage), emblem of this area. In the ‘50 Agostino Pavia started to select vineyards and invested in the first wines for bottling. In the ‘80s Agostino’s first son, Giuseppe, began to make a decisive contribution to the firm, laying the foundations for an important turning point in terms of winemaking technology, specifically with the introduction of different types and sizes of barrels, and temperature controlled vats. But it was in the ‘90s, when Agostino’s younger son Mauro also began working in the firm, that Agostino Pavia & Figli began to make a name for itself abroad and construct a solid market in the USA and Europe. Currently the company attends to its vineyards using methods in line with the supervised pest control approach and ensuring that the terrain (sand/clay and marls/clay) keeps a permanent natural grass coverage to curb soil erosion. Yields are strictly controlled, firstly by means of the removal of double shoots after flowering, then with the so-called “green harvest” at the beginning of August, when the bunches are thinned. The actual harvest, carried out exclusively by hand, takes place from the end of September to the beginning of October, and only 2-3 hours after being harvested the grapes are soft-crushed by a crusher-destemmer. The wine-making process starts out with this scrupulous attention to the vineyards, and continues with a rigorous selection of barrels (with the use of both barriques and tonneaux made of Allier and Fontainebleau oak, and 30hl barrels made of Austrian oak). GIACOMO FENOCCHIO

For more than 5 generations, the Azienda Agricola Giacomo Fenocchio has been making wines with grapes coming from its own 12ha of vineyards in the heart of Barolo area. Today the winery is owned and run by the Fenocchio brothers who are carrying on the long standing tradition handed down by their father, Giacomo. The Fenocchio brothers have always taken personal care of their vineyards, combining traditional knowledge with modern equipment and techniques. They have a great respect for the environment and give serious attention to ecological balance. The annual production of the winery is approximately 70,000 bottles. The wines are well known for having particularly suitable climates for producing wines with outstanding tasting qualities and aristocratic structures. The different soil characteristics and compositions of the under soil within the various zones, lead to wines which differ from vineyard to vineyard: in Bussia in Monforte d’Alba the soil is of elveziano origin, very compact, and made up mainly of calcareous-clayey blue marl and tuff; in the Cannubi vineyard in Barolo the soil is of tortoniano origin, made up of marl, tuff and a significant amount of sand which makes it soft and dry; and in the Villero vineyards in Castiglione Falletto the soil is elveziano with clayey and calcareous sediments which are rich in iron. Another important aspect of the vineyards is their optimum exposure to the Southeast and Southwest as well as their particular microclimates. Barolo DOCG Cannubi

SAN LORENZO

San Lorenzo Vini is a family seized and family run winery (Azienda Agricola, that is 100% estate vineyards) located in the “Colline Teramane” region of Abruzzo. The winery dates back to 1890, when the ancestors of the Barbone/Galasso family acquired the first group of vineyards and committed themselves to quality grape growing and winemaking. Nowadays, estate vineyards span over 150 hectares, mostly situated in the prized “Colline Teramane” sub-zone, by and large the finest terroir to be found in Abruzzo for hi-quality Montepulciano and Trebbiano production (proof being that the legendary Valentini estate lies in the very same “Colline Teramane” sub-zone). Ideal proximity to the seaside; a neighbouring mountain chain (Majella) offering a natural shield against rain falls; high altitude ensuring significant day-night temperature variation; deep clayey soils rich in iron oxides and limestone: these factors combined together determine the unique quality and aroma of Montepulciano and Trebbiano grapes grown in the “Colline Teramane” area.

Abruzzo - Teramo About 10 years ago young and dynamic Gianluca Galasso, assisted by his parents, started a significant modernization of both the cellar facility and the estate vineyards, to ensure a step-up in quality for the future releases of Montepulciano and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo:

-

drastic reduction of the average grape yield per hectare (from 10-11 tons down to 8-9 tons, including grapes destined to mass-market/jug wine production);

-

gradual introduction of a new vineyard management, as natural as permitted by seasonal conditions (lotta integrata);

-

100% hand-picking (harvest is carried out from early September to mid October with two or three series of picking);

-

careful hand-selection on a conveyor belt at the cellar door;

-

implementation of the winemaking protocol through new techniques of fermentation and maceration.

TENUTA DI SESTA

The Sesta Estate is located in the southern part of the municipality of Montalcino between Sant'Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on a downward slope which inclines from 400 to 200m a.s.l. In 1850, the property passed into the hands of Felice and Giovanni Ciacci, two brothers from Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The first bottles of Brunello from the Sesta Estate were produced by Giuseppe Ciacci, father of the current owner, Giovanni, in 1966, the year in which Brunello was first recognized as D.O.C. The Sesta Estate extends over approximately 200ha dedicating 30ha to its vineyards. Of these, 13.5ha are registered as D.O.C.G. for the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The grape type is Sangiovese Grosso which is used to obtain Brunello and Rosso. Cabernet Franc and Merlot yield grapes used to produce a high-quality red wine, Il Poggio d'Arna. At the Sesta Estate, the quest to maximize the expression of the land and the quality of wine growing and producing has always been very important. In fact, the vines and the land have been monitored for several years, and the quality of the product has been improved through clonal selection. At Tenuta di Sesta, the pursuit of the maximum expression of the territory and of wine quality has always been of utmost importance and is achieved through the monitoring of the land and vines of the estate. LA TRAVAGLINA

The 33ha of vineyards are located in Santa Giuletta, in the heart of Oltrepò Pavese hills (which means beyond the Po River), an area in the Pavia province that has a long tradition of excellent wines, such as the traditional sparkling Bonarda. The label “Le Zolle” identifies a selection of wines exclusively obtained by vinification of own grapes, by following criteria apted to highlight features of the terroir, such as accurate works in the vineyard and precise operations in the cellar. For this purpose the winery jealously preserves the oldest vines, that physiologically guarantee low yields and high quality, while the most recent ones have been realized with high density of stumps per hectare in order to minimize production of each single vine. All the operations in the vineyard are exclusively handmade; besides, from 1995, the farm adheres to EEC regulation 2078 concerning the drastic reduction of fertilizing and phyto-sanitarium treatments with the aim of guarantee the perfect healthiness of grapes and the protection of soil from erosion and scour. Moreover an accurate work in the cellar (soft pressing, cryomaceration, fermentation at controlled temperature) helps to preserve and highlight aromas in white wines. As for red wines, operations in the cellar aim to obtain a well-balanced extraction of colours and structure, that will be completed with successive ageing. Oltrepò Pavese DOC Pinot Nero Brut Rosé
