one season to the next. When fall moves into winter, we look forward to skiing and other winter sports, and when winter begins to give way to higher temperatures and sunny days, we get excited about getting outdoors both to exercise and to relax. In this issue, we definitely take some time to get outside and enjoy ourselves. One of the best ways I know of to get some fresh air with minimal planning or equipment is to go for a hike. We take an in-depth look at five of the trails that make up the city’s more than 500 acres of hiking pathways. Each has its own “personality”—in terms of length, difficulty, scenery, and more. Whether you are looking for an easy stroll or a challenge, you will find a good fit.

Another thing that I and many others look forward to once the weather begins to warm is sitting outside on the deck or balcony at home or the patio of a favored restaurant and sipping a cold drink. The trouble with spring in Colorado is that a warm, sunny week can lead right into a blustery and cold weekend, so we offer an alternative: a brief tour of Southern California beach towns, complete with places to stay, eat, and importantly, enjoy a cocktail—boozy or not as you prefer.

Another thing that happens this time of year is that “Save the Date” cards for upcoming weddings begin to fill your calendar. The truth is that wedding and bridal trends change as often as the seasons, so we take a look at some of the latest ideas for brides on their big day and go inside some of the city’s most iconic locations for those planning their nuptials.

Balancing Act Work aholics fin d time for fun , too.

today’s frenetically paced world, life can be difficult if you don’t find a good balance between work and leisure. “We talk a lot about work–life balance, but there’s no magic formula,” says Andrea VanSteenhouse, a Denver author and psychologist who addresses lifestyle issues. “Balance can mean different things to different people.” Although some people love their work and find it so fulfilling that they never want to retire, others find work stressful and need to pursue relaxation whenever they can, she adds.

A 2019 poll conducted by a public relations firm evaluated which American cities offer the best life–work balance. Colorado Springs came in ninth overall. So how do folks in high-powered jobs maintain the proper balance? We asked three local movers and shakers for their secrets.

Ian Tullberg Dr. Ian Tullberg is the medical director overseeing all 17 UCHealth Urgent Care facilities in Colorado.

His typical work week is 50–60 hours. But he also has a very full life outside of the job. “I could work more hours if I wanted to,” he says, “but I’m trying to achieve a balance—and honestly, I think I’m doing a pretty good job. I have a wife, two little girls, two stepsons, and five pets.”

He dabbles in painting, has discovered the joys of woodworking, and pursues his lifelong passion: pole vaulting. He has been involved in the sport since high school and

was training for the 2000 Sydney Olympics when he was badly injured.

He rediscovered it a few years ago while coaching at his daughters’ school.

Yes, he’s broken a few bones, but he’s now a world-class pole vaulter who gets up to exercise at 5 a.m. daily and competes nearly every Saturday.

He’s ranked number three in the world for his age group (40–44).

“It sounds like a cliché,” he says, “but I have fun just hanging out with the family. We have a game S P R I N G 2 0 2 0 | Colorado Springs Style

room at home and watch movies together.

My wife and I have a game night with other couples and play board games. And I love hiking with the dogs. It’s hard to be stressed with a dog licking your hand.”

Meanwhile, his life is so hectic that he often eats his lunch in the car, on the run.

That’s OK, he says. “I’m more of a go-withthe-flow guy. I can certainly get anxious and hot-headed like most people, but I like to have fun, joking around with my staff and keeping things lighthearted.”

John Suthers Since being elected mayor of Colorado Springs in 2015, John Suthers figures his average work week has been 70 to 80 hours.

“When I say that, some people say, well, you go to all those parties and such. But I wouldn’t go if I wasn’t working or expected to speak,” he says. Still, he finds time for himself, too. “Oftentimes, I have a breakfast meeting, but if not, I try to get to the gym by six so I can still get to the office by eight.”

Despite a full calendar, he manages to keep stress at bay. It helps to have a well-ordered life, he says. He credits his wife, Janet, with that. She ensures they spend time with nonpolitical friends.

He also likes to get away once in a while.

“Sometimes, I do a little business travel, which involves some interesting things, like a trip to Japan (at our expense). Over and above that, we try to take at least one good vacation a year.”

Family time is important, too. “Nothing 18

better for work–life balance than spending time with a three-year-old,” he says.

He also values alone time. “I walk a lot.

On Saturday mornings, I do a lot of good thinking (outdoors). He also rides bikes and plays golf with Janet.

Another part of his routine is “reading for half an hour at night before I go to bed.

Mostly biographies and autobiographies, mostly American history.”

Of course, a big part of his job, public speaking, could be a stressor for others, but it doesn’t bother him. “I’ve been at this a long time, so I’m pretty comfortable with all of it. When you’ve argued a case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, giving a state-of-the-city speech doesn’t worry me that much.”

Linda Weise Linda Weise is the founding CEO of the Colorado Springs Conservatory, established in 1994 to bring world-class performing arts education to the region.

Both Weise and the conservatory have been recognized with numerous national awards. She’s also an avid supporter of other nonprofits. She recently launched a new business, Vortici, with “a mission and vision to forge and develop inspired work in arts, culture, and arts education.”

Currently, the conservatory is undergoing major changes, “so I feel like I have five full-time jobs. One of them is to remain

creative, which takes the most time.”

Although she’s not sure how many hours she averages in a workweek, she does know that “I sleep an average four to six hours a night, and if I’m not sleeping, I’m working.

I feel very fortunate that I love what I do, so I never feel like I’m working.”

She typically rises at 3:45 a.m. “I read first. Then, I make sure I hike every day. I swim four to five times a week—no matter what.”

She also prioritizes family time with her rancher husband and two daughters.

“Sometimes I have to force myself to slow down, to pay attention to them. We’re a very tight family,” who cooks together and has dinner together whenever they can.

A classically trained vocalist, she also performs from time to time. “I have a very rich, full life,” she says. “And guess what?

I get to work with kids and music. So how bad can it be? That’s not to say it’s not a lot of work, but it’s so satisfying.”

Final Thoughts “There are people who don’t have much balance in their lives, and they’re OK with it,” VanSteenhouse says. “There’s a saying: At the end, you never regret not spending more time in the office. But that’s not really true for everyone. Balance doesn’t look the same to everybody. You’ll know it when you find it.”

here are lots to choose from. Did you know that Colorado Springs has more than 9,000 acres of parkland and 500 acres of trails?

Yes, hiking works out your total body. It improves heart health and your mental and physical well-being and strengthens your bones. But, really, just being in the great outdoors boosts sensory perception and calms stress and

anxiety. And you’ll get your vitamin D and raise your serotonin (the happy chemical) levels.

Along with scenic cardio, unplugging from technology and being in nature increases your attention span and gives your overloaded brain a chance to recharge and your tired eyes a rest.

Listen to the birds, smell the wildflowers, absorb the fabulous scenery, and breathe the fresh air.

City-side Hiking and Walking

Want a quick hike during lunch or after work?

Colorado Springs has no shortage of urban hiking/walking/biking opportunities. These include the Pikes Peak Greenway and Legacy Loop.

According to Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services, the city’s nearly 125 miles

Tier one trails are the main “spine” trails, 12 feet wide with a hard primary surface and soft shoulders and landscaped with shade trees and wildflowers. Tier two trails are feeder trails for tier one trails. Paved with concrete or asphalt, they’re also 12 feet wide and have a four-foot soft shoulder of mowed grass or gravel—no landscaped buffer. Tier three trails are smaller, natural trails that are four to six feet wide.

Remember to prepare for your hike with careful planning. We live at altitude, and sudden storms and lightning are always possible.

5 Great Hikes

If you’re new to the city or sport or are getting back into it, here are five beautiful areas to explore on foot.

Monument Valley Park

Monument Valley Park is a beautiful 153-acre gem given to the city by General Palmer in 1907. Running along the western edge of downtown and bordered by the rushing Monument Creek, it’s two miles long and divided into northern and southern portions. You can hike a loop of both sections for four miles or one loop for two miles. It’s an easy and peaceful hike/walk and perfect for running, intersected by the Pikes Peak Greenway. Along the way, there are baseball and soccer fields, a playground, tennis/ pickleball courts, and beautiful views everywhere to refresh your spirit.

Palmer Park

Palmer Park is another gift from General Palmer in 1899. This amazing wilderness area right in the middle of town is completely surrounded by city.

With more than 25 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, there are hiking opportunities for every level and a doggie park at the top. And, if you want to end your day with a stunning happy hour, be at the top in late afternoon/early evening for a breathtaking sunset. Go to the entrance at Maizeland Road or take Chelton Road until it dead ends at Paseo Road.

From there, you can hike all the way to the top or drive to the top and hike the mesa.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a feast for the senses.

This stunning 1,474-acre park on U.S. 24 adjacent to Manitou Springs is made up of eroded canyons and the breathtaking red rocks that continue the same geologic formations in Garden of the Gods.

It’s a great mix of trails from easy to challenging.

Doggies can run off-leash on the Upper and Lower Dog Loops. A few trails worthy of exploring include the peaceful Contemplative Trail or head to the Quarry for some fun history, enormous rock formations, and the miners’ staircase cut into the rock.

Looking for a Red Rock Canyon little adventure? The Open Space wooded Seven Bridges Trail rises up from the trailhead in North Cheyenne Canyon Park. It follows the cascading North Cheyenne Creek and crosses over seven wooden bridges, shaded all the way by tree canopies. Although it’s rated as moderate/ intermediate, it has a constant and gentle altitude gain of 1,600 feet for 3.7 miles for an out-and-back loop. The trail continues at

the top into Jones Park with more difficult terrain, but most hikers turn back at the seventh bridge. If you are exploring the 1,600-acre North Cheyenne Canyon Park further, be aware that it’s habitat for black bears, mountain lions, and mule deer. Doggies should maybe stay home.

Ute Valley Park is a beautiful, charming, and quiet suburban park in northwest Colorado Springs on Vindicator Drive, away from crowds and city hubbub.

Kind of a well-known secret, it offers a variety of hiking trails for all levels and great single-track biking trails and is perfect for running or walking. The views and rock formations are spectacular with lots of streams and lookouts. Doggies love it. So does the abundant wildlife. So will you.

Dana Point Trails wind through the Dana Point Headlands Conservation Area, which has sweeping ocean views and an interesting interpretive center. The city was named after Richard Henry Dana Jr., author of sailing tale Two Years Before the Mast, which included a description of the area.

Dana described the locale, including neighboring San Juan Capistrano, as “the only romantic spot on the coast.” In the 1950s, pioneering surfers discovered Dana Point, and in 1954, Hobie Alter, of Hobie Surfboards and Hobie Cat fame, opened the mainland’s first retail surf shop in Dana Point. Early surf legends came to ride “Killer Dana,” a legendary wave that broke at Dana Point Cove.

San Clemente Built in the 1920s as a Spanish village by the sea by former Seattle mayor Ole Hanson, San Clemente has about 300 sunny days annually and some of the best surf on this coast. Hanson’s favored Spanish Colonial Revival architecture still rules in the quaint stucco-and-red-tileroofed homes and popular civic buildings, such as the Ole Hanson Beach Club, the community center, and the harborside pier.

Getting There There are several much quicker options than loading up the station wagon, kids, and dogs and driving the two full days to SoCal. Flight options abound from both Colorado Springs and Denver with several final destinations in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. Book a nonstop flight on United to LAX out of the Springs or take a puddle jumper from COS to Denver, where United, Frontier, and Delta, among others, fly into all three of the aforementioned airports.

If you want to leave your car at DIA, Groom, formerly known as the Colorado Springs Shuttle, has several pickup locations all day long from the COS airport to DIA, and travel time is less than two hours.

Colorado itself is considered something of a destination wedding location even though we’re not on a secluded tropical island with nowhere to go but the pool, beach, or bar.

With so many things to do in and around Colorado Springs, wedding-goers can get in a round of golf, a beautiful hike, a trek down snow-covered slopes, or relax at the pool, all without having to tack on any extra days for the trip. And choosing a venue that can facilitate some of these activities makes for easy planning.

The Broadmoor is an elegant candidate for this all-inclusive option. The connected buildings date back to the 1890s, and with the use of all three, a bride and groom can tailor their day however they choose up to about 140 people.

“Brides are really loving the urban vintage feel of a brick warehouse you might see in Chicago or New York City,” Werner says. “And with the various packages we offer, they can do their own DIY wedding and still get a lot of services from our staff, which helps ease the stress on the bride and family.”

Werner says they host some 100 weddings annually, but because the venue is so customizable, every affair is quite different and beautifully representative of the couple.

Couples who are planning a more traditional church ceremony but also want the quintessential Colorado backdrop will gravitate toward The Club at Flying Horse. Located in

“We have a very different style of architecture,” says Diane Bice, special events director.

“Everything is very Tuscan, and brides really like that it’s different.” Bice says they host many local couples, but about half of their weddings are people who grew up in Colorado Springs and have chosen to come back for their big day because of the destination appeal. “It’s so beautiful here,” she says. “I think it’s just a big draw for out-of-town guests.”

The traditional wedding registry completed at the local department store has been impacted by consumer behavior for the past several years, and the ease of online shopping, trend toward group gifting, and social media are playing a part in what’s new and different.

“More and more couples are already living together and have already acquired things,” says local wedding planner Sarah Viera of Sarah Viera Events. “I think younger couples are more into experiences, but I think you need a mix of both.”

Viera advises her couples to register for more traditional items at stores like Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn because there are many things to choose from in varying price ranges. Then, they can also register for experiences at online sites such as Zola or Honeyfund, which also offer group gifting options. She also advises against registering for gift cards.

“People want to give something,” Viera says. “If someone wants to give cash, it will be given in an envelope with a card, and that is perfectly acceptable, but no one wants to give a gift card.”

Another trend, especially for couples that own a home together, is to ask for guests to help fund a major home improvement. Viera says this is a great way to send the message that they already have household goods, and guests can rest easy knowing their money is going toward a project that will last for years to come.

It might be more stressful to cull down the list to the 40 or so people who get invited, but the budget per guest can be higher, making for a celebration that really delivers. self-serve sipping: A new take on the manned bar station, guests can serve their own beer, Champagne, or signature cocktail and dress it up with their choice of mix-ins and garnishes.

vip entertainment: Bands and DJs are not going away, but brides and grooms are amping up the fun with secondary entertainment to wow their guests. These include photo booths, guest sketches, interactive stations, and even magicians. sudden exposure: Viera says film photography versus digital is making a comeback although the classic images still reign. “There is something so special about capturing the groom when he first sees his bride coming down the aisle,” she says. Still, photographers are predicting more photo sessions on honeymoons and even days before the actual ceremony to cut down on stress on the big day. the gift of giving back: This newer trend is making its way onto bridal registries and into ceremonies.

A couple may ask for donations to be made in their name to a favorite charity in lieu of gifts or they may choose to make a splash to end their reception with an announcement that in lieu of party favors, a donation has been made to a meaningful charity as a thank you for guests joining them on their big day. “Guest experience is huge right now,” says Viera. “It’s all about making the guest feel welcomed and thanked for coming.”

nfertility has been called a very lonely and isolating club—a club no one wants to be a member of. As Healthline.com author Brandi Koskie wrote in 2018 about her personal journey, “Infertility is shrouded in taboo and shame, so I felt like I couldn’t talk about it openly. I found that there was little information that I could actually identify or connect with. I was left to manage a primal yearning with broken parts on my own.”

And as author Megan Isennock put it in a piece she wrote for Baltimore magazine, “Even if you have the most supportive, involved spouse. Even if you have a team of health professionals at a world-class institution on speed dial. It all boils down to you, and the fact that you’re still not you plus one.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, out of 100 couples in this country, about 12 to 13 have trouble becoming pregnant. About

a third of infertility cases are caused by fertility problems in women, another third due to fertility problems in men, and the remaining third caused by a mixture of male and female problems or by problems that cannot be determined.

Koskie and her husband tried for two years to get pregnant before seeing a doctor. After a long period of tests and saving money and daily injections, their first cycle of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process in 2009 was successful.

Infertility treatments such as IVF have come a long way since then. Shona Murray, M.D., an associate professor with the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and medical director of University of Colorado Advanced Reproductive Medicine Colorado Springs, says, “IVF success rates have drastically improved over recent years. When I first started doing IVF, success per embryo transfer was about 17%, and at that time,

Murray credits numerous advances in the laboratory with significantly improving IVF success rates. “We have better equipment, better media, and better incubators, all of which have played a role in markedly improved pregnancy rates.”

When the eggs are ready, they are removed by a surgical procedure where a needle is placed through the vagina into ovaries.

The eggs are then fertilized, and some will develop into maturing embryos. Typically, a single embryo is then placed into the hormonally prepared uterus.”

Many folks transition to the IVF option after trying on their own to get pregnant for a period of time. Infertility, says Murray, is the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse.

olden Oldies Rugby requires only one rule to gain entry into this time-honored sport’s association: You must be old enough.

Fred Alexander knows. The former college football player— first at Texas A&M and later at Texas Tech—took up rugby when he moved to Denver at the ripe age of 27, eight years shy of Golden Oldies membership for men.

That was 51 years ago. Now, at 78, this retired architect still savors the chance to suit up for his team, the Colorado Senior Ol’ Boys Rugby Football Club. He enjoys the competition, fellowship, and camaraderie, minus the extreme

Along the way, Alexander became more than just a fervent rugby player. He also became an ambassador to get the sport more exposure in the United States, a mission he accomplished in a rather big way by persuading VSL Events, a New Zealand–based organization, to stage the biennial Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival in Denver in June.

“I’ve been working on getting this thing to get to Colorado since 2005,” says Alexander, the United States’ representative and head of the

Although they’re ultimately coming for the rugby, it’s really about the overall experience at the Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival. In addition to three games, there are a multitude of other activities and events that’ll make this a week to remember.

organizing committee. He learned that Denver had been awarded the 2020 event at the last festival, held two years ago in Christchurch, New Zealand. “I kept bugging the organization to have it in Denver, and it finally happened.”

According to event manager Gabriel Morales, the Golden Oldies Rugby Festival attracts more than 100 teams from 16 countries to Stenger Sports Complex in Arvada. From June 8 to 15, each team plays in three matches, sprinkled around a variety of other activities, including traditional opening ceremonies at Infinity Park in Glendale along with picnic day, rest day, and finale function and awards dinner, among others. Somewhere in the range of 1,500 to 2,000 players are expected to take part in the event, which is making its first United States appearance since San Diego hosted the 2005 event.

One of the features that makes the event appealing— as well as financially possible for some—is the flexibility to stagger out packages and accommodations fees over five installments spanning more than 18 months.

So what makes Golden Oldies different? First, to play, men can’t be younger than 35, women 30.

There is no maximum age. In addition, as opposed to standard rugby, which is played in two 40-minute halves, Golden Oldies shortens the contests to three 20-minute periods. And there are certain

modifications to rules of contact if a player is 60 or older regarding tackling or contact altogether. Those players wear red (60, can be contained, not tackled), gold (65, cannot be tackled), or purple (70, cannot be tackled or touched) shorts.

Also, there is no “cleaning out” around the rucks and mauls among the number of variations that limit contact, overaggressive play, and chances for injury.

After all, Golden Oldies, in its event brochure, bills its organization as one built around a spirit of “fun, friendship, and fraternity.”

“I’m 78, and I still play,” says Alexander, who suited up for the Denver Barbarians and Lamar Dust Devils back in his younger days. “I work out three days a week and walk my two dogs daily.”

In its original form, rugby is made up of 15 players on each side—also known as a “union”—whose objective is to carry the ball over the opponent’s goal line and ground it for a score, also known as a “try.” Players

And in June, a different brand of rugby is coming to Denver with an emphasis not on the competition or final result, but instead on celebrating suiting up and enjoying one’s favorite sport, perhaps for the last time.

Dr. Derek was raised in Colorado Springs and graduated from Colorado Springs Christian School. He then attended the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for one year prior to transferring to the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Derek graduated With Honors from UT and was immediately accepted into the dental school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA,) which was rated the #1 dental school in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Derek received multiple awards in dental school, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Predoctoral Student Award and election into the honorary dental fraternity Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an achievement limited to the academic top ten percent of graduating dental students. After graduating Summa Cum Laude (“With Highest Honors,) he entered his pediatric dental residency at UTHSCSA. Dr. Derek’s research as a second-year resident was honored with “First Place” at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s annual session in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Derek opened Cool Mountain Kids with the intention of running his office like a family. Extra time is intentionally scheduled to provide each patient with a positive experience and to allow parents to become involved in the oral healthcare of their children. As a father of three, Dr. Derek recognizes the unique attributes and personality differences of every child and hopes to tailor the experience to each individual patient.

Dr. Derek loves Texas Longhorn athletics, the Broncos and Rockies, attending live music, and spending time in the mountains. He married his childhood sweetheart, and the two will be celebrating their 20-year wedding anniversary this year. He and his wife stay busy raising three very young children and a mini-Goldendoodle named “Mae.”

As a dental student at the University of Minnesota, I realized that I had a passion for the science and art that this surgical field incorporated. After receiving my Dental Degree in 2008, I went on to complete a 4 year residency program at Indiana University Medical Center, where the focus of my training included surgical removal of wisdom teeth, dental implant placement, treatment of facial trauma and fractures, management of oral and facial pathology, and comprehensive training in intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. As Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, our training allows us to safely treat many nervous patients who otherwise would avoid receiving necessary care due to fear and anxiety. These anesthesia techniques also allow us to comfortably treat patients in need of dental implants or the bone grafting and procedures required to prepare for dental implants.

When a patient comes into my office, my goal is to try to understand the experience from their perspective and to make the process as easy and comfortable as possible. Let’s face it; no one enjoys having a surgical procedure. At Pikes Peak Oral Surgery, our goal is to make sure that every patient experience is completed in a caring and comfortable environment by a surgeon and staff, who truly care about their patients. am again honored and humbled to have the opportunity to care for the people of Colorado Springs and its surrounding towns.

I want to thank you, and the dental community, for ranking me a top oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Colorado Springs for each of the past six consecutive years.

My wife and I moved here almost seven years ago, and we have loved every minute of it. We came here by way of Wisconsin then Minnesota then Seattle, arriving at our final destination of Colorado Springs to chase the sun and enjoy the beautiful Colorado outdoors. We enjoy hiking, camping, hunting and skiing. We have two young children in school now, and we feel so fortunate to be able to raise them here.

The practice has also grown and changed. Recently, Dr. Hildebrandt retired after being in practice for nearly 40 years. We are also extremely excited to have brought in Dr. Tony Peterson

this year to better allow us to continue to serve our patients and doctors. Dr. Peterson served our country for nearly 21 years in the military and is a Colorado Springs native.

Both Dr. Peterson and I are board certified surgeons who specialize in wisdom teeth removal, IV sedation, placement of dental implants and bone grafting, oral pathology, trauma and jaw surgery. r. Kimberly Batterson has been practicing orthodontics in Colorado Springs for 18 years. She was born and raised in Iowa but has since considered Colorado her home. She attended the University of Iowa for her Bachelor of Science Degree. She then attended dental school there receiving her Doctor of Dental Science. Afterwards, at the University of Iowa, Dr. Batterson completed her two-year residency in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics receiving her Masters in Science. She is board certified with the American Board of Orthodontics.

Since renovating her office last year, Dr. Batterson has the latest in technology and advancements in orthodontics, including having intraoral scanners, diode lasers and 3-D imaging. She is passionate about treating the bite, the face, the joint and the patient’s airway. She believes it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis before rushing to a treatment plan.

Dr. Batterson currently serves as the chairman of the Council for Orthodontic Healthcare for the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists (RMSO). She will be finishing up her 6-year term in 2020.

She has been active in the RMSO for most of her career and believes in giving back to the profession. She is also a member of the American Dental Association, Colorado Dental Association, Colorado Springs Dental Society and the American Association of Orthodontists. In addition, she participates in many local and national study clubs, including the local Seattle Study Club and the Southwest Angle Society. “My passion is learning. I feel blessed to have so many bright colleagues around me that I can discuss difficult cases with. You’re never too old to keep learning.”

Dr. Batterson is married with two children. They love living in Colorado with all the outdoor opportunities it offers. They enjoy skiing, mountain biking and climbing fourteeners as a family.

In her free time, Dr. Batterson is an avid runner. She is also involved in the local National Charity League (NCL) with her daughter, Abigail, serving as VP of Philanthropy.

Dr. Batterson feels very fortunate that she has found a career that is as rewarding to her as it is to her patients. “It is a great feeling knowing that my work brings a positive and lasting change in my patients’ lives,” Dr. Batterson says.

a DMD degree from the University of Florida College of Dentistry where he graduated on the Dean’s List with several patient care awards as well as the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society’s Ethics Award. In 2002, he returned to Active Duty and graduated from the US Army’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program. In 2009, he completed his Endodontic Residency at Fort Bragg.

He has lectured for the Canadian Forces Dental Command as well as the US Air Force Academy Residency. He presented endodontic research at a national conference and lectured to numerous dental societies and conferences. His passion for teaching demands he stay current on the latest technologies and techniques especially within pain management.

Dr. McKissock married his college sweetheart, Jill, and is the proud father of Dean, Cole and Luke.

She is now a Board Certified Prosthodontist, owning two private practices in Colorado Springs, Oasis and EsthetiX Prosthodontics.

Dr. Funtik is an active member of the Colorado Springs community, being named a Rising Star in 2015 and was honored to be named a Woman of Influence by the Colorado Springs Business Journal in 2016. Snoring during sleep is common among people of all ages, don’t assume it’s normal. Snoring is usually the most noticeable indicator of OSA, which is far from harmless. OSA can have a wide range of long-term side effects on physical and mental health. These are particularly worrisome when they affect

children. Some of the common warning signs of childhood sleep apnea include: snoring, choking/gasping during sleep, restless/ poor sleep, daytime headaches, morning fatigue, lack of energy, nightmares, bedwetting, and learning problems. Causes may include narrow palate, growth deformities of the upper jaw or airway, or enlarged tonsils.

Early orthodontic treatment for expanding the upper jaw or advancing the mandible can eliminate many of the symptoms associated with childhood sleep apnea. While OSA needs to be diagnosed by a physician, our doctors work with specialists to diagnose and treat growth and development problems, reducing the risk of sleep apnea.

Dr. Watts is a Board Certified Orthodontist and has spent hundreds of hours beyond his general dental training to reduce or eliminate OSA symptoms. At Rangewood Orthodontics, we have made it our priority to be at the forefront of research and treatment of adult and childhood OSA.

r. Ursula Price is a native of Nebraska where she studied at University of Nebraska at Kearney. She then relocated to Texas where she was accepted into the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, part of Baylor College of Dentistry, from which she graduated top of her class earning her the program’s Gold Medal Award.

After working as a dental hygienist for a year, Dr. Price was accepted into Baylor College of Dentistry. In 2009, she obtained her Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree while also earning scholastic recognition during her dental school education. Dr. Price returned to Nebraska to complete her postgraduate periodontal residency. During her training she received numerous honors and awards for her exceptional dedication and competence. She also gave many hours of instruction in undergraduate periodontics to students during her final two years of training. In 2013, she earned a Master of Science in Oral Biology and Certificate of Periodontology from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Dentistry.

To stay on top of the latest advances in periodontics, she also attends numerous continuing education courses. Although she keeps a busy schedule, Dr. Price has volunteered at the local Children’s Hospital, taught dental health to elementary school students and even tutored her classmates while in dental school.

wo years have nearly gone by since Dr. Rebecca Facy opened CoMax (short for Colorado Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons).

Having practiced in Colorado Springs since 2005, she is grateful for the trust the community continues to show her. Her unique approach to patient care resonates so well that the practice continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Dr. Facy is excited to announce that a second surgeon, Dr. Margarita Varer, will be joining CoMax in July of 2020.

Dr. Facy’s award-winning office incorporates innovative technology, enabling the most cutting edge and effective treatments available.

She performs a large range of procedures including tooth extractions, implants, bone grafting, facial trauma, facial reconstruction, and pathology. She has a particular love of corrective jaw surgery also called orthognathic surgery.

Everyone at CoMax is devoted to ensuring that all patients have a positive experience. Both Dr. Facy and her staff work closely with dentists, doctors and other medical dental specialists so that each unique patient treatment plan is well coordinated and executed seamlessly.

From neighboring Utah, Dr. Facy started off with an undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Utah. She then earned her DDS at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Supported by her husband, Eric, the final stop took her to the University of Pittsburgh, where a six-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program earned her an MD. Dr. Facy is board certified and attends continuing education classes offered from experts all over the world.

Dr. Facy has always loved the technical aspects of surgery. She keeps her skills sharp by undertaking exceptionally complex cross stitch designs as a hobby.

She made Colorado her home in 2009 and enjoys being outdoors hiking, biking, skiing and now snow shoeing after this winter. Although she excelled in school and had a great education, her love and compassion for children is something that cannot be taught. Her kindness expands from her practice walls where she supports

t’s not surprising that Drs. John Lydiatt and Abigail Nye find ways to provide exceptional dentistry and grow an awardwinning practice. They have spent nearly every 4th of July together. Both share a passion for family values and community support. They are cut from the same cloth, they are first cousins.

The two were mentored by their late Grandfather, Dr. Dan Nye, a physician. “Papa” supported the community and helped define the way medicine was practiced. They are enthusiastic for “working hard, not hardly working”, a quote Papa lived by. Both enjoy helping the generations of families that come into Springs Dentistry and learning their family dynamics.

Dr. Nye graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School and completed a one year residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She recently became certified in BOTOX and can offer this service to patients. Dr. Lydiatt

graduated from the University of Nebraska Dental School after receiving his Bachelor’s from Nebraska Wesleyan.

They are extending their dental patient family from the Colorado Springs community. In March, the two are traveling to Ecuador with other Springs Dentistry staff members to provide dental work to families in need. “We are excited to make the trip,” says Dr. Nye. “We have been involved in a number of local service projects, but now we are providing at an international level.” Dr. Lydiatt adds, “This is a fantastic opportunity for all involved. I’m so proud of our staff that has led this effort to make this happen.”

r Enea has been a licensed dentist since 1987 when he received his doctorate in dental surgery from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. In 1990, he volunteered for service in the United States Navy where he served as Assistant Dental Officer Orlando Florida, Force Dental Officer for Naval Support Force Antarctica, Sherman Field Clinic Director and Training Officer, Pensacola Florida and Dental Department head aboard the USS Seattle AOE3 where he deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Watch. He exited the Navy in July 2001 and started the practice he is in now.

In 2008, Dr Enea again volunteered with the United States Air Force Reserve where he served as the Surgeon General Dentist for the 302nd at Peterson Air Force Base. He currently serves the Colorado Air National Guard as the Surgeon General Dentist for the 140th med group at Buckley Air Force Base.

Dr Enea has a busy private practice perhaps due to his

conservative nature of treating patients but certainly because of his outstanding and friendly staff. He has a passion for implant dentistry and has accumulated an additional 380 hours of continuing education just in the last year. Dr. Enea holds a Fellowship and a Mastership in the International Congress of Oral Implantologist, Fellowship and Mastership in Oral Implantology from the Rocky Mountain Dental Institute. Dr Enea also has a passion for teaching and is faculty with Implant Pathways but, also lectures on the benefits of using Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Plasma for augmenting bone grafting and dental implant placement. He has been published in Dental Implant Magazine.

In his personal life, Dr Enea enjoys scuba diving and has been a scuba instructor with Underwater Connection in Colorado Springs, and especially enjoys spending time with his wife Mary who is also an avid diver, and enjoys the outdoor life that only Colorado can offer.
