III CONTEXTUAL STUDIO PROJECT BRIEF TYPE : High density - low rise housing ; redesigning a residence cluster in the vernacular styled “POLS” of Dakor. AREA : 535 SQ.M SITE : Gopalpura Pol, Dakor, Gujarat, India.

CASESTUDY The POLS of Dakor’s heart, with narrow streets and houses made out of timber frame (vernacular architecture), in 1800s.

INTENT Issues with the “POL” houses such as insufficient ventilation, lack of community open space, inability to adapt to increasing traffic conditions and an unhygenic, crowded street scape were identified. A cluster of houses was selected to be upgraded to improve the overall living conditions of the 10 families residing there. Fabricating a housing community that responded to the “CONTEXT” of the pols and the users’s traditional living patterns and simultaneously enhanced their lifestyle was the challenge.
