Shafiul Islam Lilon, a professor of social science at the university, was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after he was attacked at noon. The director of the hospital, Brig Gen Nasir Uddin, officially declared him dead around 4:45pm. “He received several injuries to the head which caused severe bleeding, eventually leading to his death,” said Nasir. His colleagues confirmed that he had been researching on 19th century Baul legend Lalon Shah over the last one year. His wife died many years ago and he used to live with his only son at their RU campus residence. However, after his son got admitted to the Dhaka University and moved away to the capital, he shifted to a rented house in the Chouddopai area.
