The laptop facelift

If you’re strapped with a bland looking laptop that lacks colour and style, worry not. With spray paint, a few bejewelled embellishments and a good dose of creativity, you can easily amp up the style quotient of your laptop

Step 1

Colour it To change the colour of your laptop, read on. A word of advice: it’s best to test the spray paint on a different surface similar to your laptop, before application. This will help you understand how well the layers set and what sort of a finish it has.

You’ll need

• Spray paint • Masking tape • Gloves • 1000 grit sandpaper

Directions

Spray-painting your laptop may sound like a scary thought. However, given that you remove the parts to be painted, you’ll be fine. Begin by carefully removing the parts you want to paint. If you’re unsure about how to go about it, follow the service guide of your laptop (you can even find videos on YouTube). Clean the laptop, making sure there is no dust or finger stains. Wipe it down with

a slightly wet towel and then dry it clean. For any part that you don't want painted, cover it very carefully using masking tape. If necessary, use a scale to mark where you'll place the masking tape to ensure picture perfect precision. Cut the tape to round the corners and make sure you cover the buttons and LEDs. Cover holes/ports on both sides as well.

Before you begin spray painting, test the paint on a similar surface to check if it is resistant to scratches or rubbing. If it works well, begin your painting spree. Place the parts on a newspaper and start painting from side to side. Start with the edges that are hard to reach and then move on to the larger areas. It's best to start with one layer, working your way up to four layers, giving ample time for each layer to dry. Give each layer an hour to dry. If any section gets clumpy, wait for it to dry and then use the sandpaper to scrape it off, and paint again.

Step 2

Bling it Once your paint job is completed, feel free to let your creative juices flow. Head to any of the local lace and button stores to buy your preferred collection of buttons and stick-on stones. First, plan your design and based on that design, trace out how many types and number of buttons and stick-ons you'll need

Directions

Use a pencil to lightly trace out your design on your laptop lid. Start with placing the largest buttons first. Stick a bit of superglue to the stone, give it a few seconds to dry and then place it on the lid. Repeat with the rest of the stick-ons, going from the largest to the smallest, pinning the pearls sporadically. Give it ample time to dry and there you have it - your customised glammed laptop!

In the early days of the World Wide Web, we were hooked to messaging boards and chat rooms. The social app Banter aims to bring back the interactions of a chat room to your phone. This app is incredibly simple.

The main difference between Banter and others is returning to the old form of online socialising through mobile devices.

The Banter team doesn’t consider itself to be a competitor to WhatsApp or SnapChat. “It’s a simple way to chat about what matters to you,” is the statement on its website. The message couldn’t be any simpler. You get your username and password, enter a group and chat away. There are countless topics or “Rooms” that you can join and interact in. You can have proper discussions on your favourite TV show or go as detailed as arguing about the best kind of cheese.

Too slow through Windows

One of the most common issues with computers is that at a certain point of its lifespan, things will tend to slow down. In many cases, it’ll seem slow to a lot of users within a year of purchase. You can assume plenty but know that it’s not actually the computer’s fault. Sometimes it could be other elements that are in play, like a slow or disturbed Internet connection. But if you are sure that your PC is the problem, there are certain things to check off on your list of issues.

Your Local Disk (C:) drive is usually where your operating system is installed on. If it’s red or maxed out, the performance will suffer, which means it’s time to do a clean-up. Opening Microsoft’s System Configuration tool, by pressing Windows+R and typing in “msconfig,” would be the first step to take. There are plenty of “Startup” applications that will drag down your PC’s performance. Go ahead and uncheck or disable the ones that are absolutely unnecessary. It’s also possible that there are applications operating in the background that you can also disable. However, if there is a service running that you are unsure of what it actually does, leave it be.

It’s better not to take risks.

If you want to take it a step further, you can always uninstall programmes or software that you rarely use.

A large amount of dirt from the road finds its way on to the undercarriage and sticks there. This has to be scrubbed and washed off in order to protect the various mechanical components found on the bottom part of your car against rusting and ageing.

same hybrid component from a third-generation Toyota Prius. It uses a 98hp 1.8-litre engine that ticks over using the Atkinson cycle, a combustion process optimised for economy rather than performance.

This is paired with an 81hp electric motor that helps provide a combined power output of 134bhp. That’s not a terribly impressive power figure, and it shows. The Lexus CT200h goes 0-100kmph in 10.3 seconds. That is not very fast to be brutally honest.

The car has enough grunt to keep up with the flow of fast-moving highway traffic, but doesn’t really offer enough power to obliterate its rivals. With a top speed of 180km, the Lexus CT200h gives a combined mileage of 12km/l, with 14km/l inside the city and 17km/l on the highway.

Safety

Lexus CT200h does not only promise an excellent ride but also top notch safety features. The CT200h passengers compartment is loaded with eight air bags to give an all round safety. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters are used for all seating positions in the CT200h. The default pre-collision system (PCS) helps reduce collision damage, the direct tire pressure monitor system alerts the driver when the tire pressure is critically low, combined with a range of structural reinforcements for a better protection.

Lexus CT200h maybe a bit down on the power but it is a perfectly designed car for outstanding luxury.

And to top it up, the exterior has the killer looks of a road hungry car.

In short, the Lexus CT200h is an excellent car that performs brilliantly!

On a typical weekday, you could hop on a plane and get to Kolkata faster than you would be going from Gulshan to Dhanmondi. It used to be that things slowed down after the evening rush and while this is true for some areas, places like Farmgate or Sonargaon Road continue to experience jams way past midnight. With the T20 games looming round the corner, it’s anyone’s guess what the situation will be like in a few weeks.

The most recent threat comes in the form of sophisticated carjackers, as described in a report by the Dainik Janakantha last week. The report details the modus operandi of a gang which travels in SUVs and purposefully collides with other cars to create a dispute.

During the ensuing argument, they will ask their victim to get into their vehicle for a trip down to the police station to resolve the matter.

If the victim complies, a member of the gang will then confiscate the keys to the victim’s car and drive off with it.

Since it isn’t feasible to let fear of these gangs restrict your movements, it’s best to be prepared for such situations. Avenue T recommends saving the number of the police hotlines onto your speed dial in the event of a collision.

Not a good idea to ignore such a thing. Calmly talk to your wife and ask her what makes her feel uncomfortable about you spending an evening with friends. She is clearly in pain and feels “she is not being heard.” To “hear one out” means to put oneself in the shoes of the other. It is no good saying “I explained my point of view.”

The other person needs to feel s/he has been heard. Your wife’s distress needs to be heard, that is when she will feel re-assured that you understand her. Forget about the incessant phone calls or the nagging question of why you’re always so busy. When your partner works with you, both of you are in the know-how about each other’s work priorities, giving you the breathing space you need.

While you have your space to work in a stress-free environment where you don’t constantly have to be checking your phone, there’s also the pleasure of knowing that love is just a few cubicles away. You no longer have to succumb to the agony of a “long distance” relationship (or so it seems to those who spend hours at separate workplaces). Lunch breaks and sales calls too can become your convenient dating hours. As for times when you just want to vent about the boss or the overpaid colleague, again, your beau is ready to allow you a comforting venting session.

While it does seem reassuring to have someone close to you at your workplace, sometimes, the lack of space may suffocate you. You go

I had been in a relationship with K for the past two years. He has always been a psychotic, abusive, crazy lover. The tone of the office and the furniture will not get their grand due if the colour scheme is not apt. Wall colours such as white, beige, offwhite and various shades of cream are suitable in case you are looking for a professional look. Extra touches

Though furniture and colour scheme are both very important, they only provide the outer look of your office, it is up to you to give it character.

Generally known as the frequent cold, this is one of the most common form of ailments. Although it is not a life threatening disease, it certainly does turn out to be a constant annoyance for those who catch a cold often.

Coughing, sneezing or even using a communal phone can lead to a cold. Cultivate a culture of hygiene in your workplace by placing tissue boxes in each cubicle and around the photocopy machine. Whether you’re sending a few faxes or making photocopies, try to wash your hands

right after. It’s also very useful to keep a hand sanitiser handy for times when washing your hands becomes an inconvenience.

Food poisoning

If you’re suffering from stomach soreness, vomiting or diarrhoea, you may have food poisoning. If you’re eating from your office canteen or getting takeout that is served at your desk, be sure to take a close look at the cutlery you’re using. To reduce the probability of contamination, only order food from places that have high quality standards for their packaging.

Also inspect the conditions under which the food in your office canteen is cooked. Sometimes it’s not even the food but the plates and cutlery used that cause illnesses. Carry your own dishwashing liquid in a small container and wash your plates yourself to make sure they’re clean before you use them.

Influenza

If you suffer from chills, muscle tissue pain or fever, you may be suffering from influenza. As a very infectious disease, you may pick it up by using workplace tools such as printers, crockery, telephones or even fax machines. Again, make the hand sanitiser your best friend.

Oral herpes

The most unpleasant disease of the lot, oral herpes can be caught just by speaking to a colleague who’s infected. Symptoms include visible cold sores that infect the area around the mouth. Be careful about communal eyeglasses, mugs, plates and cutlery for these are part of the major risk zone that is prone to carrying this disease.

Since we take actions (karma) based on our habitual patterns, we reinforce in the mind and body those same patterns. The effects of our actions leave residues in the mind-body. These residues are called samskaras. Samskaras are the psychological and physical grooves that influence the way we perceive each moment of experience based on previous actions. The feedback loops we create, the psychophysical habitual grooves and patterns, are known as samskaras.

Our ability to skillfully meet each and every moment with openness, is possible to attain with practice.

When we are open and our habitual, psychological and physical ways of being are suspended, we arrive in the present moment of life, free to respond with an open and creative heart. Yoga is a path out of our present conditioning towards freedom from habit. The opposite of samsara is an open space of possibility in which we can flourish.

The heart always seeks a path out of discontent but the mind and body put up resistance. To challenge our habitual grooves of comfort, we must practice yoga not only on the mat but in every action we take, including every day chores, etc.

Practice and awakening are less about standing on a yoga mat and more about how we respond in the here and now to answer the great questions in life. On the other hand, treating our yoga postures and breathing practices as meditation techniques, opens up deeper and deeper feeling pathways.

Yoga means union. It is not something we seek outside of ourselves but rather the recognition in the present moment of the unification of life, the inherent interconnectedness of existence, nondualism, the collapse of separations. Yoga is a way of being and a mode of existing in the present moment. (If you had something precious to hide, where would you hide it? In the present moment, because we have forgotten how to look at the present moment.)

You have been an architect for around 25 years. Do you think there has been a change in the way offices were visualized in the earlier days compared to now?

In the good old days, offices were more about cramming together as many people as possible. I have seen offices designed by architects with literally no space to maneuver.

One would sit in one place and work without realizing that it stifles creativity. And then the Google campus came into existence. No fixed hours for work; access to gyms, cafes, swimming pools, libraries and lounges. Google realized that this kind of environment motives people to come to work and spend more time there and justify that work by creating something new all the time.

Has Bangladesh also implemented this?

Overall no. The trend is changing and we are transitioning to a more westernised economy. However, even people who are newcomers to business irrespective of various background still think cubicles are the way to go. In most western countries cubicles are disappearing replaced by hot-desking. Everything is in your laptop; you just plug in and work. This kind of environment already exists in offices like Grameen phone.

How would you strike a balance between the Bangladeshi work culture and modern work space, when designing for a client?

I would start with their existing office and observe what their work environment is like. Instead of creating something totally new, completely alien to the employees, I would improvise from what they already have and start incorporating new ideas. I have also noticed that when we make an abrupt shift to a totally new office, people are disoriented for months and they won’t know how to cope. A slow transition is always better than abrupt change. I would never ask someone to change the office overnight. Changing on a piecemeal basis allows the work flow to continue without any disruption and at the same time people can get visually acquainted with whatever changes are coming and they can give their input would be my way of doing things.

How does office attire contribute to work environment?

EMK center, for example, is very much geared towards young people.

Its membership is totally driven toward students, young entrepreneurs and volunteers. We don’t expect them to come to a very starchy

office environment. We want them to feel at home here. We encourage acceptable clothing which are casual but presentable. This affects the work productivity in a positive way. There is a mandatory need to be comfortable and feel at home at work places. Without mentioning names, a multinational bank when it first came to Bangladesh expected its female employees to wear suits.

However, they later realized their employees were not comfortable with it and they changed the dress code to colour coordinated salwar kameeezes. The reason I am quoting this example is to make it clear that even though international working environment should be implemented, it is important to balance it with local work culture to make things comfortable.

Can you name few offices in Bangladesh which have succeeded in making a statement which other offices should follow?

Grameen Phone, British American Tobacco and few other MNCs. I also would like to point out the new generation of offices that the young people coming back from abroad and either taking over their family office or setting up their own firms are also implementing these standards.

I’ve been called in for an interview, and I want to dress to impress. I was totally planning to rock a cute blazer jacket but then the weather got too warm. How do I put together an outfit that says I’m dynamic and professional?

A

A well-fitted salwar kameez will work just as well as a blazer; maybe better if you don’t know how conservative your prospective employers are. Err on the side of caution by picking a classic cut something that is fitted but not too tight, neither too short nor long. Avoid loud prints and overly bright colours, and also avoid black; it’s too confrontational.

Choose a moderate pair of heels that you’re comfortable walking in and carry a modest purse. Don’t wear jewellery that jangles but do wear a watch. That’s pretty much it. Best of luck.

The first rule of thumb to dressing sexy at the workplace is to know that sexy does not equal to flaunting your girlies and looking like you’re headed to the bar. Just get the right fit to flatter your physique. That will pretty much do the trick.

Accentuating the curves

Miniskirts at work are a big no-no; you come off as a try-hard and they might not be too comfortable to walk around in at the workplace. Trade them for some knee length, fitted pencil skirts and a blazer. They will accentuate your curves, making you look professional yet sexy.

Pairing it right

If you are not a big fan of those pencil skirts, get hold of a few pairs of dress trousers. Pants tapered at the ankles do a great job in complimenting curves and elongating legs. Pair up with a sexy tucked in shirt or a blouse, and some pointy heels or something equally steamy.

Going deshi

If you're wearing a sari or a kameez at work, pin it up well. Avoid wearing bright colours unless you work in the creative field. Sporting scoop necklines and sleeveless kameezes or blouses is no faux pas with summer around the corner. But do keep in mind that you don't need to show any skin or cleavage in a plunging V-neck.

Well, it really depends on your workplace. Some jobs, particularly in the hospitality industry, require you to wear a sari.

If there isn’t such a stipulation at your work, then it really isn’t the best outfit to wear on a daily basis, especially if your job requires you to move around a lot. The key here is to be comfortable, though, and be able to move freely and not be self-conscious. If you can do all that in a sari, that’s great. If not, maybe a smart salwar suit, or a blazer and jeans combo is a better option for you.

However, some basic rules still remain the same. Steer away from eye-skimming bangs that you constantly have to push away from your face. On the flip side, if you’re confident enough, you could always go for Anna Wintour’s mid-length bob with bangs. We all know her look screams power.

Wearing your hair long at the office is fine if you keep a few key tips in mind. You could always opt for the power ponytail-hair scraped back and secured neatly at the crown.

This puts the focus on your face.

Always try to pull back longer bangs and clip them in place or try a headband in a basic colour.

Avoid elaborate hairstyles that require a ton of maintenance throughout the day. Hair twirling with your fingers and fussing with your hair may not be the best way to appear as a professional woman. Whether it’s a neat chignon or a flawless top knot, you have endless options to play around with to ensure you step into the office looking as powerful as you feel.

Staring at the screen for hours on end can really take its toll on your face. City suits There are many shops around town that hang suits but only a few are worthy enough to mention Cats Eye

A good variety, but their trousers are of better quality. They still have the traditional unflattering cuts for suits (or suit jackets). Strangely yet fortunately, the trousers make up for it.

Known for their high price tags, it’s justifiable. Their high quality, compared to most cannot be matched.

Unless, of course, you decide to head off to the tailors instead. They take their threads business seriously.

The only thing lacking is the slight adjustments to fitting.

Here’s a decent lot of suits. The main attraction here is that the quality meets the price, somewhat. There will be a selected few to will meet the standard that you will be able to bag and walk out the door with. They get the basics done correctly but there's always room for improvement.

Off to the tailors

While most stores have stock ready to hang on racks, the best way to don a suit is taking the fabrics you’ve chosen to be made at the tailors. Nothing beats good old fashioned tailoring. Raymond’s may be an obvious choice and a bit costly, but you shouldn’t limit yourself to the somewhat highbrow society choices. It would be wise to find yourself a tailor that you can build a solid relationship with. The key is to ask of them what you want and find a middle ground where both parties are satisfied with the final decision.

Recently opening its doors to Banani’s food laden paradise, Hakasa is the first eatery of its kind. Aptly named a “noodle bar,” their concise menu consists of a varied selection of noodle dishes, along with a few appetisers here and there. Ever since its launch Hakasa has amassed all sorts of extreme reviews – some have vehemently dismissed their food deeming it “tasteless,” while others have welcomed it with an open mind.

Brightly lit with sparsely spaced wooden seating and fluorescent pendant lamps, the interior is minimalistic and unpretentious. The menu on the contrary, maybe small, but is definitely on the ambitious end.

Every dish, be it the Burmese Mira soup noodles or even the Brocolli and Shitake stir fry noodles, is meant to be distinctly different from every other.

Once seated in their surprisingly packed eatery, you are given a small complementary serving of spinach with a shrimp paste twist. Fresh, soft and average tasting, it gives you the first glimpse into what’s to come.

DOGGY BAG IT VIETNAMESE SPRING ROLLS

FIVE CHILLI SPECIAL The best dish out of the lot is the Five Chilli Special made with Hoi Sin sauce priced at Tk475. Made with a special sauce consisting of siracha, dried red chillies, green chillies, red chillies and Naga. Initially tangy, then slowly building up to the spice quotient, this is one dish that actually has more taste than any other, given that they put enough of the sauce (they can be inconsistent in this department). Some find it extremely hot, while others think it’s insipid at best.

The Bamboo Shoot and Sesame Seed stir fry is definitely a much better alternative as far as recommendations are concerned.

Priced at Tk475, this large dish is made with Thukpa noodles and Char Siu sauce. Smokey and slightly sweet, most of the flavours are restricted to the fresh broccolis and the beef strips. Foodies be warned, the sliced bamboo shoot

is meant for palates accustomed to its distinct taste.

Another dish that one may try is the Brocolli and Shitake stir fry noodles priced at Tk475. Made with black bean sauce, again , this too has a flavour that not too many palates will find noteworthy.

Salty, pungent and tasting of black beans, some even claim that this may leave a slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall, however, the darker flavour of the sauce and the shitake mushrooms is still worth a try, certainly beating the Burmese Mira by a few hundred miles. The Brocolli Mustard with chicken strips priced at Tk450 is made using muted flavours of mustard and flat yellow egg noodles. Again, like most of their dishes, the flavours are flat and difficult to grasp but still somehow existing in the sea of noodle that begins to dryly cling to one another.

The spring rolls are made using extremely thin rice paper and is filled with a delightful mix of fresh ingredients: soft vegetables, chicken and the crunch of wanton

strips. Priced at Tk250 for three pieces, it may seem slightly pricy but given the refreshing lightness, it’s that one thing there that is worth a definite try.

BURMESE MIRA The Burmese Mira, priced at Tk 513, is a deceivingly good-looking soup noodle dish. Arriving in a massive bowl, the tiger prawns and the boiled egg peep out of this gloriously rich looking dish.

An instant visual delight, the dish has the heady aroma of coconut, inviting you to its comforting depths. Despite the dish being at

Overall Hakasa should be applauded for being the first noodle bar in the capital, as well as their unique selection of dishes and the fresh ingredients.

However, truth be told, their noodle dishes are such that they don’t really blow your mind away or urge you to come back for more. They can be called okay at best or perhaps they’re an acquired taste that several tries

organises their first annual sports event

CRI Centre for Research and Information (CRI) arranged a diversified ‘policy café’ discussion programme on ICT policy of Bangladesh, as the government is going to formulate a complete and balanced ICT policy soon. The event was held on March 18 at Ruposhi Bangla Winter Garden. ICT expert and youth icon Sajeeb Wazed Joy chaired the programme.

Young experts, entrepreneurs and professionals shared their suggestions to develop a user friendly ICT policy for a better Bangladesh.

East Way BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) organised the Annual Sports Competition-2014 with a prize giving ceremony at the Armed Police Battalion’s playground, Uttara, Dhaka. Muzaffar U Siddique, Chairman, board of trustees of BUFT inaugurated the Sports Competition as the Chief Guest. After the competition he distributed the prizes among the winners.
