But the offense wasn’t the only entertainment supplied by Aledo on a breezy night in East Parker County. The Bearcat defense, led by senior Rylan Riney, held the Hawks to 10 points in the first half. Birdville scored via field goal in the first quarter and scored on a touchdown and extra point attempt in the second quarter. Riney had two interceptions with eight yards and three solo tackles. “We just want to stop them early in the game to give the offense enough plays to score like they did,” Aledo’s No. 24 said. “The first three I just read the receiver, I made a real nice break on it and the second one I closed on the receiver and
thought he was going to catch it.” Buchanan summed up Riney, who’s been playing varsity since his sophomore year, with just a simple sentence. “Good football player,” the veteran head coach said, “Just a great kid.” Aledo led at halftime 20-10. The Bearcats came back in the third quarter to score an additional 20 points and that’s all they would need for their ninth “W.” Birdville scored seven points in the third quarter. “They (Birdville) came out and played hard,” Buchanan said. “I never really felt like we had the game in the bag until late in the third quarter.” The Bearcats take to the road for their final game of the regular season before the start of the

playoffs. Buchanan said the goal is to end the regular season at 10-0 (the team finished with a loss to Weatherford in ’09) but he says it won’t come easy. To achieve their goal, the head coach gives them the simplest advice. “The biggest thing is get better every day, don’t take a day off in practice,” he said. “If you want to win the state championship – which is what they want to do, its their team and they set their goals and that’s what they say they want to do – and if you want to do that, you’ve got to get better every day. “If you don’t, somebody else is and you’re not going to win in the end.” Catch video highlights and pre-game videos at www.community-news. com.
