Welcome Back to Your Home Away from Home We really want you to feel at home here at the J and are thrilled to announce that after three months of renovations, our lobby has been transformed into a warm and welcoming space for all to enjoy. Along with the fresh look you’ll find some new, modern-day conveniences, just like at home. We’ve also made changes in Member Services to better provide you with high quality, seamless service.

As soon as you walk through the front door you will feel the energetic vibe coming from the new hub of the building – the concierge service desk. Here our Member Services associates are at your service, ready to provide you with a one-stop shopping experience. Now you can check in, update your membership, enroll in a class, purchase tickets to an event, register for camp, and get a new member ID card, all right here in the front of the building, Sunday through Friday. Member Services director, Lauren Carstensen, has also relocated to a new office next to the front lobby – stop by and say hello!

Come hang out at Laykie’s Gourmet Café where you can enjoy delicious food, healthy snacks and beverages. Have a latte and check your email in our Wi-Fi enabled café and lounge seating areas. Check out when and where activities are taking place throughout the building on our new wall-mounted information screens.

Adapted Aquatic Special Needs

Designed for individuals with special needs who require individualized swim instruction and/or adaptive equipment to be successful in the water. Lessons are customized for each student to teach water safety, functional and recreational swimming skills with the ultimate goal of progressing through the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Levels. Ceramics: Wheel-Throwing and Hand-Building Adult

For students at all levels with a focus on wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques. Beginning students will learn the tools, techniques and vocabulary of clay. Intermediate and advanced students will be guided as they refine ideas and are exposed to more complex techniques. Rehearsals will begin on Sept 7 and continue on Sundays and Tuesdays (tech week prior to performance week may consist of additional Mon/Wed rehearsals). Two class times are being offered, allowing two full casts to each perform the three separate shows. The group takes part in Celebration Company, a supportive and transitional employment program developed by JFS Disability Services for adults who have disabilities. Participants exercise here together for an hour each week. Their workout consists of a half-hour on the cardio equipment, followed by a fun-filled chair aerobics class.

Honoring Jewish Tradition’s Happiest Day of the Year New this year, we are dedicating August 24 as a day to “Explore Yom Kippur.” The rabbis of the Mishna, in tractate Ta’anit, teach that Yom Kippur is the happiest day of the year because it is an opportunity for us to renew our commitment to Jewish living and community.

“Explore Yom Kippur” will include something for everyone, starting with a performance of uplifting songs for preschool children and families. In the afternoon, adults will be able to study with Houston clergy from across the denominational spectrum. Two cultural events round out the evening with an art reception, followed by a musical concert featuring David Krohn.

If you are seeking profound study in a year-round learning community, the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning is for you. You have the choice of three different times and locations for the weekly Year 1 Core classes. For those who have completed the Core classes, the school’s Scholars program offers you 13 new, faculty-created courses on a variety of subjects.

We are excited to introduce two Scholars classes that will offer you the opportunity to reflect, share and explore your spiritual side: “Healing for Broken Hearts” and “Trends in Modern Jewish Worship.”

We are also offering two short-term opportunities in the fall.

The first is the 6th Annual Rice University Lecture Series “Authentic Judaism? Questions of Culture, Language, and History.” The series is made possible by the Maurice Amado Foundation and will be held October 7–19. The second is “Iraq n’ Roll” which will be taught by Rice University Postdoctoral Fellow Yehuda Sharim on October 29. The program features the English-subtitled documentary film Iraq n’ Roll

Iraq n’ Roll Adult

This program features the English-subtitled documentary film Iraq n Roll (by Gili Gaon) with pre- and post-film discussion.

The movie follows popular contemporary Israeli rock musician Dudu Tassa as he embarks on a deeply personal journey to reconnect with the musical legacy of his grandfather, Daud al-Kuwaity. The Melton Core Curriculum includes four courses which participants take over two years. Year One includes Rhythms of Jewish Living and Purposes of Jewish Living. Year Two includes Ethics of Jewish Living and Dramas of Jewish Living.

Developed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and facilitated by outstanding faculty from across Houston, the curriculum provides a wonderful opportunity for adult Jewish learning. Numbers: Leadership Defied and Defended Adult

Reviving Jewish Theatre at the J We hope you are as energized as we are by this year’s exceptional lineup of events that celebrate and showcase Jewish arts and culture. Thanks to your generous support we are able to present innovative, thought provoking and all-out entertaining Jewish arts programming for the community.

“It’s just not enough to create a different author lineup, premier new films, and introduce new dance and music groups. We’ve got to flex the overall season,” said assistant executive director Marilyn Hassid. “Thanks to the inspiring vision of our president, Bobbi Samuels, and the leadership of our committee chair, Maida Asofsky, we are reviving Jewish theatre at the J.” Several shows will comprise the season beginning with Kaddish by actor and Jewish educator, Jake Goodman. Kaddish is a stage adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning writer Imre Kertész’s magnificent novel Kaddish for an Unborn Child. In the spring, we will present the regional premier of Joshua Harmon’s Bad Jews in a zesty co-production with Stages Repertory Theatre and Black Lab Theatre.

Another invigorating cultural addition to the upcoming season is Keyboard Conversations® with Jeffrey Siegel. Jeffrey will bring his dynamic performances, captivating comments and lively Q & A to the Kaplan Stage for three events throughout the season.

“This is a result of the imaginative thinking of Patrons Gloria and Joe Pryzant. Gloria introduced Jeffrey to the J,” said Marilyn. “Gloria has known his work for years and thought his program would not only be a great fit for the J, but could also be a cooperative venture with the Houston Symphony, an organization with which she is also involved.”

This is just a bit of what patrons can expect for the coming season as we continue to present entertaining, educational and inspiring programs for all ages. For the 2014-15 Season, Patrons of the Arts will continue to receive access to all Arts & Culture programming as well as an annual J Program Membership ($180 value) that provides member pricing to classes and programs. Patrons at the Gold Level ($500) and higher will receive two tickets to one of the performances of Bad Jews. Diamond Plus ($1800) and higher will receive two tickets to all three Keyboard Conversations® programs. Also, to encourage the involvement of younger audiences we have reintroduced the Generation Next Level of support for those 35 and under.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A current Membership card must be presented upon registration.

Members may register for one family other than own with the presentation of the family’s current membership card. Please use separate forms for each family.

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

All classes must meet minimum enrollment requirements. The J reserves the right to cancel an activity due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen circumstances. Full refund is given in this case.

Class make-ups will be held during the week following the end of regular semester.

Fees for all classes, workshops, teams and activities must be paid at the time of registration. When necessary, special fee adjustments are made through each department.

Most activities are for members only. Only selected classes are open to the public.

If a participant withdraws from a class or activity before the semester has started, a 75% refund is made. The remainder is retained to cover administration costs.

In the event that a class is cancelled, a full refund is made. A refund check will be issued and mailed within 6 weeks to the address on record.

Payment may be made by check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover Card.

All refunds will first be applied to any other outstanding balance, including membership. No refunds are made for any reason after activities begin.

1. The Evelyn Rubenstein JCC reserves the right to cancel any class, activity, or group in which case a full refund will be made.

2. In the event of withdrawal BEFORE the first meeting of a class, activity, or group a partial refund will be made in the amount of 75% of the original registration fee.

3. TRANSFER from one program to another (space permitting) within the same department will be permitted BEFORE the beginning of the semester. Transfer AFTER the program has met will be permitted only with the approval of the department director.

Participation in any activities and use of any recreational facilities involves risk of accidental injury despite all safety precautions.
