Hello everyone and let me extend a very warm welcome to this year’s festival on behalf of all of us in Dublin LGBTQ Pride. Since last year’s Pride Festival we have had a turbulent year as a community filled with hotly fought debates over the proposed Civil Partnership Bill amongst many other concerns, we as a community hold. This year’s theme “We Are Family Too” will highlight the fact that LGBTQ families inhabit a legal limbo without recognition or protection from the State and with no legal rights or constitutional recognition. While we welcome the fact that the Government is recognizing the lack of protection for LGBTQ people in Ireland, there remain many important areas, particularly regarding LGBTQ families, where the legitimacy of our lives as LGBTQ people is not respected nor given equal status. On behalf of the Board of Dublin LGBTQ Pride I would like to extend our thanks to the many volunteers who have given so freely of their time and expertise to make this festival possible and to wish each and everyone of you a very very Happy Pride! We look forward to seeing you at the many events that have been organized as part of this year’s festival and we hope you enjoy all that Pride has to offer. So remember to get out, be PROUD and have a fantastic time.

Dia dhaoibh go léir agus thar ceann gach duine i Pride Bhaile Átha Cliath ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur romhaibh chuig Féile na bliana seo. Ó bhí Féile Pride na bliana seo caite ann bhí bliain an-shuaite mar phobal againn le díospóireachtaí bríomhara maidir leis an mBille um Pháirtnéireacht Shibhialta atá molta, i measc nithe eile atá ina n-ábhar imní dúinne mar phobal. Léiríonn téama na bliana seo “Is Teaghlach Muid Freisin” go bhfuil teaghlaigh LGBTQ ina gcónaí i liombó dlí gan aitheantas nó cosaint ón Stát agus gan cearta dlí nó aitheantas bunreachtúil ar bith. Cé go gcuirfimid fáilte roimh admháil an Rialtais nach bhfuil cosaint ann do dhaoine LGBTQ in Éirinn, tá neart réimsí eile, a bhaineann le teaghlaigh LGBTQ ach go háirithe, áit nach bhfuil meas ar dhlisteanacht ár saol mar dhaoine LGBTQ nó nach dtugtar cothrom stádais dóibh. Thar ceann Bhord Pride Bhaile Átha Cliath ba mhaith liom ár mbuíochas a ghabháil leis na hoibrithe deonacha ar fad as an am agus an saineolas a thug siad go flaithiúil chun an féile seo a chur ar fáil agus guím Pride Sona ar gach aon duine agaibh! Táimid ag súil go bhfeicfimid sibh ag an-chuid de na himeachtaí atá eagraithe mar chuid d’fhéile na bliana seo agus tá súil againn go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh as gach a bhfuil ar fáil ag Pride. Mar sin, gabhaigí amach, bí PROUD agus bíodh am iontach agaibh.

Mise le Mórtas, Oisín Ó Raghallaigh, Cathaoirleach

supportive and understanding, in fact they found it harder to deal with me being a vegetarian than being gay! I have nothing but love and pride for my parents. Whenever I am asked who my heroes are I am not embarrassed to say it’s my Mom and Dad. They have raised six healthy young men, they’ve come through times of financial worry, illness and even loss and through all that my parents have shined. When I am older I can only hope that I will have inherited some of their spirit and strength because if I even have half of what they have then I know I can be a great person. I am proud to be able to stand up and tell the world that I am gay and I am proud to belong to such an amazing and colourful LGBT community but most of all I am proud that I can say Jim and Helen Doody are my parents.

They say there is no greater joy than being a mother and father and it’s true. We have watched for the last 28 years as our boys grew into young men. It isn’t an easy job raising six boys, money, food and patience were always things that you could find yourself short on but for us, love and pride was something we could never give enough to our boys If it meant giving them our last penny then we would go without just to see them smile and be happy. There are times when you struggle with your family, fight over little things like who didn’t empty the dishwasher or who set fire to the kitchen while trying to make

something we had planned on or even thought about when the boys were growing up, it is just a part of who my boys are. They don’t receive any special favours, they don’t get treated differently in our home because they shouldn’t be. They are no different from their other brothers and we love them the exact same as we do all our children. The hardest part for us was wondering how other people would treat them – not everyone is willing to accept or understand that there is no difference between a straight person and a gay person. We are so proud of all our children. We are also very proud

I haven’t always been the perfect son, I’ve been less than patient with my brothers and I’ve hurt my parents but being a part of family means that you can look beyond all that and be forgiven. Growing up in my household was always really interesting, my parents and my brothers are some of the most colourful and outspoken people I have ever met in my entire life. It wasn’t always easy, with six boys comes a lot of drama, fighting, screeching and temper tantrums but my parents took it all in their stride. We were taught from a very young age that while we might not always see eye to eye we should still respect and stand up for each other. Coming out as being gay in my family was hard to do but not because I thought my family would hate me but because I felt I had somehow let them down, I only know now that I was so wrong in thinking that. My family have been so

Helen & Jim Doody: Mother & Father

There is no such thing as a perfect family and the family cannot be defined as simply a mother, a father and children. Family goes beyond that... popcorn... but these are all taken in stride when that same little blonde haired boy puts his arms around you and tells you he loves you. Our boys are all men now and they have their own lives and their own friends and even though they don’t live at home anymore we never feel like our family is growing apart if anything that bond between us grows stronger. We have two gay sons. It isn’t

to be part of such a beautiful and strong LGBT community, a community that has had such a profound effect on our family, offering support and acceptance. There is no such thing as a perfect family and the family cannot be defined as simply a mother, a father and children. Family goes beyond that, it is a feeling in your heart, of pride, of strength and of love.

over 90% of the rights associated with civil marriage. Tax, inheritance and property are the main issues addressed. These are important but is this really how we want our families to be defined, as a business arrangement? This bill does not address 90% of the most important rights for our families, the rights of our children. Nobody has the right

DUBLIn PRIDe festival 2010: We Are FAmIly Too

This year we will be celebrating our sixteenth PRIDE together. We married in Canada on our tenth anniversary, and in 2008, we welcomed our wonderful son Alex into our lives. Our family has been enriched by Alex and every day is a new and exciting journey. We share his sense of wonder in every little thing, and giggle as he stares wide-eyed and whispers “wow”.

We understand the great privilege it is to have a family like ours and the need to protect it in law... Alex does not have the right to his two parents – one of us remains a stranger to him in law. We understand the great privilege it is to have a family like ours and the need to protect it in law. And yet we are not protected; our marriage is not recognised by this state and our family is invisible. Alex does not have the right to his two parents – one of us remains a stranger to him in law. This position will not change if the Civil Partnership Bill is passed, where children are not even mentioned let alone protected. It has been argued that this bill will give us

to cherry-pick our rights. Nobody has the right to deny Alex his rights. PRIDE is a celebration, but more importantly it commemorates the start of the modern gay rights movement which seeks to end discrimination and inequality. It is so important that the theme of PRIDE this year is - “we are family too”. We call on all families in our community to assert our place, be visible, be vocal and demand full equality.

DUBLIn PRIDe festival 2010: We Are FAmIly Too

Within the LGBT community and further afield in society, there is a certain lack of understanding on gender related issues and I’m absolutely thrilled to be the Dublin Pride Grand Marshall and to be the first woman born transgendered in Ireland to do so, following in the illustrious footsteps of Senator David Norris and Ailbhe Smyth. If my role on the 26th of June 2010 helps to initiate discussion on the greater need to better understand the issues that transgendered people face in modern Ireland today, then I will be delighted. When I first started my struggle to amend my Birth Certificate over 14 years ago, I could never have realised that it was such a long frustrating road. As a person unused to legal matters, it seemed like a simple thing to be able to do, like changing the name on a marriage licence. However after many years of struggle there is now the recognition by the Irish government in the Programme for Government announced last November that Ireland needs to conform to the instructions of the European Court of Human Rights and to recognise the right of those who are born transgendered to amend their birth certificate to their true gender. We are the only country now within the European Union not to have conformed to this judgment dating back to 2002. A birth certificate is more than a piece of paper which records the date that we entered this world. It defines who we all are and legally recognises us in all matters relating to our every day lives and is a fundamental document of human definition. For that reason I decided to fight for my right as I saw it and for others coming behind me. I hope that everyone taking part will enjoy Pride, and we can truly celebrate our unique human diversity, in a spirit of inclusion and equality as we strive for a more equitable Irish society in 2010 and beyond. 17

On THe rOAD AGAIn.....

A guide to everything you need to know for the Dublin Pride Parade 2010, to ensure you have a safe and empowering day.

Before We Go: Start off the day by having a good breakfast. It can be such a long day so you will need all the energy you can get. Such a simple task will keep you singing and dancing all day and night long, 18

especially if you were also out the night before! Wear sensible shoes for the Parade. The parade route can be a daunting walk, especially if wearing your stilettos! So if you do decide to wear your fabulous Carrie Bradshaw approved, 6-inch heel Manolo Blahniks, make sure to pack a pair of trainers, in case they get too much for you. Dress sensibly and if it’s warm take off any excess (within the bounds of the law, of course!). The sun doesn’t always shine so have a brolly ready, just in case. Be aware of your surroundings and security at all times. Don’t leave your personal belongings unattended or place them on any of the floats. Remember crowds are a favourite haunt for pickpockets. Keep any necessary items, especially medication, water, cash etc to hand.

to drink in public. DCC and the Gardai are extremely supportive and helpful in the organising of our event, so we ask that you respect this request.

Be patient if the parade stops from time to time, as this is necessary to maintain cohesion, so we don’t fragment into mini parades. Make sure to keep a safe distance from any moving vehicles and do try to get on or off any floats etc while in motion! If for any reason you need Garda or medical assistance, a steward can help you to get their attention.

Portaloos will be available on-site, together with waste bins to help keep the area clean and safe for our fellow citizens. A control point will be in operation at the event for the reporting of any incidents.

Post Parade Venue: Access to the Civic Offices is controlled and will be from Winetavern Street and Fishamble Street. There will be security at this access, and alcohol will be confiscated before entry is granted. This event takes place in public space and it is simply illegal Accessibility:

Wheelchair Access

Emergencies: There will be an ambulance at the rear of the parade. If you feel ill or someone beside you has taken ill, please move yourself or the people involved to the pavement and attract a steward for assistance. If you have a condition that could cause collapse please tell a friend or steward what action should be taken in that eventuality. Look out for those near you; remember we are all in this together.

Dublin Pride 2010: Dublin Pride 2010 celebrates the theme “We Are Family Too” highlighting the fact that LGBTQ families inhabit a legal limbo without recognition or protection from the State and with no legal rights or constitutional recognition. With that in mind we are aiming to make this year’s parade, the biggest and most colourful parade ever held on the streets of our fair capital. As this is going to be such a glorious day, we would like to take this opportunity to point out a few tips to ensure that everyone has a Safe and Happy Pride!
