WELCOME TO DEVONPORT JAZZ 2018 “Jazz is a feeling, more than anything else. It isn’t music, it’s language.” Enos Payne We welcome you to the 17th annual edition of Devonport Jazz. There are so many great events happening at our festival this year. As well as our regular concerts, dinners and dances, we are incorporating some new elements with the introduction of Street Eats (a mini food truck festival) and a Sunday Market, both with a healthy helping of jazz on the side. By adding these family friendly events, we hope to engage new audiences and to offer our regular patrons some new experiences. This year we are excited to be hosting Czech a cappella group SKETY. It has taken a few years of planning, negotiation and collaboration, but finally, with the assistance of Viktor Zappner, Ingrid James and Karina Rose (and some grant funding from the Czech Government), SKETY’s long awaited appearance will be a highlight at our festival. One of the great offers we have this year is our new Festival Pass. You can be part of more than 15 events across the festival at just one low price of $89. You will have saved over $60 and be able to attend our headline event with SKETY, all the Pure Jazz Sessions with Gregg Arthur, The Hobart Jazz Quartet and the Jamie Pregnell Quartet, plus a selection of other events, without having to book. It’s great value! Look for this symbol to see which events are included in the Festival Pass Look out for our free pop-up events such as a tribute to ragtime’s Scott Joplin, a cappella group In the Groove and a Street Parade. You can find out more on our website and Facebook page as we get closer to the Devonport Jazz weekend or come and visit us at the Jazz Hub. We are indebted to everyone who has brought this celebration of music together, the sponsors, organisers, volunteers, venues, the performers and our community. Devonport Jazz is Tasmania’s premier winter jazz festival and we certainly couldn’t do it without some great support from so very many contributors. We invite you to explore the region, share the music and immerse yourself in some unique experiences at Devonport jazz.
