Easy Steel Carport Construction When Mark Gramont of SoddyDaisy, Tennessee (near Chattanooga) wanted a new carport to provide shelter for his boat, he did what any techsavvy, intelligent consumer would do. He went online and researched his options. That is when he came upon the SteelMaster website. As soon as Mark saw a Steel carports design, he said he knew SteelMaster was the way to go. The pictures and customer stories on the SteelMaster blog were part of what convinced him to place his call to SteelMaster. Mark and his wife, Gina, had a good idea of what they wanted, but wondered if SteelMaster could really accommodate them. Their carport had to be approximately 16' x 32' with a clear span, and built upon a concrete slab against a retaining wall in their backyard. The answer is unequivocally, "YES!" SteelMaster steel and metal arched buildings are custom designed with the unique specifications for each customer in mind. The width, height, and length of each building is tailored to suit whatever the customer's needs are for each and every SteelMaster boat storage facility, carport, shed, airplane hangar, workshop, etc. Another aspect that sold Mark on a SteelMaster carport was the ease of construction our customers have shared. Construction had to be relatively easy and an unobstructed view was a musthave, since their home backs up to a beautiful view of the water. "I wanted something that would be built to last, not flimsy like some of the other carports out there – and pleasing to the eye," said Mark. SteelMaster fit the description perfectly. The only minor glitch in the whole process was when delivery truck broke down. However, the Gramont's were called and advised their delivery would be a couple of days later than scheduled. Mark had a positive attitude about the delay. "Hey, that's no biggee, really. Stuff like that happens in real life. At least we were notified and not sitting around waiting for the delivery." "I must admit though, when the truck showed up with all the pieces to our carport kit, we were a little intimidated. But once our slab was finished and we actually started assembling the pieces of the SteelMaster kit with the directions, we breathed a big sigh of relief," Mark said.Mark and Gina constructed their carport themselves, with a little help from a couple of friends with assembly of the steel arches. It took them on and off approximately 50 hours from start to finish. They opted for a concrete slab floor and it ended up taking two truckloads of concrete. The only questions Mark had were regarding their concrete base and pillars.
"The SteelMaster Engineer and their customer service staff were very helpful when I called their home office in Virginia Beach," said Mark. "I had not bought anything of this magnitude from out of state before, but any reservations I may have had were quickly alleviated," he added. The Gramont's also made use of scaffolding, which made their construction a lot easier due to the scope of the carport. And, they devised their own pulley system for raising pieces of the steel up and down. Mark humbly mentioned that he has raced sailboats and catamarans for quite some time. (SteelMaster has a feeling he has probably won more races than he has lost.) And Mark had a feeling he could incorporate some of his boating equipment into the construction process to make it even easier. Mark and Gina used sailing block cleats as a pulley system for raising pieces of steel up and down. This ingenious process worked out wonderfully for them, and they did not mind sharing their idea with others who may have sailboat equipment available for use. SteelMaster customers are just cool like that. They like sharing ideas, tips and pictures of their buildings. SteelMaster customers share a unique sense of comradery, almost like an elite club, one always open to helping new members.
