Having a Best Friend

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand “Today my best friend slapped me in the face”. They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone “Today my best friend saved my life”. The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?” The other friend replied “When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.” Moral: Do not value the things you have in your life. But value who you have in your life.

For The Basket Ball Fans Match At Sahakarnagar

February 01 to 08, 2014

WAIT FOR THE BROWN NUMBER PLATED AUTOS AROUND US The traffic police have come up with a colourful idea to rein in autorickshaws being plied illegally. Each auto-driver will be given an alphanumeric code depending on the area in which he/she operates. The code is to be printed on a colour-coded number plate and displayed in the front and rear of the vehicle. There would be seven colour codes representing each traffic sub-division in the city. The new scheme, titled “Bangalore City Saptavarna Suraksha Sugama Sanchara”, will help identify autos plying in the city illegally as the alphanumeric code and special number plate is to be provided after verification of each vehicle’s documents, a police officer said.

“Life is like a Basket Ball it just keeps jumping up and down”. We learn to win some and loose few. This is the lesson our teams learnt at the matches. Sahakarnagar Basketball Club organized the 2nd State level Basketball flood light tournament from 22nd Jan- 26th Jan 4:00 pm - 10pm at the Sahakarnagar Basketball Court. Shri Krishna Byre Gowda, Minister and MLA and Smt Indira, Deputy Mayor, BBMP, inaugurated the tournament. The court filled with basketball enthusiast both young and old. Many of them brought with them their dinner and snack packets to enjoy the live game and even cheer the players. The participants were

Mounts Club, Beagles, Mysore team, Mandya Team etc. Sashi, a supporter of the team felt, “ This is an excellent manner to promote the game. This is how our children shall be able to relate to sports. We must conduct many more games like this each year”. A newly built changing room was also inaugurated for the players to use. The entire crowd supported and encouraged the players and they were extremely happy with their performances. We from NEWS AROUND congratulate the winning team for their efforts and accomplishments.

The city has about 1.3 lakh autorickshaws. There have been several complaints against drivers alleging harassment, refusal to ply, demanding excess fare, taking longer routes and rude behaviour. Police find it difficult to track the driver concerned if complainants do not note down the registration number of the auto. In many cases, when a vehicle is sold ownership details of the autorickshaw is not updated in the Regional Transport Office concerned. Additional Commissioner (Traffic) B Dayanand said, “The proposal has been approved by the authorities concerned. It will be implemented soon.”

WORLD CANCER DAY

Issued in Public Interest by Aveksha Hospital, MS Palya.

What is World Cancer Day?

tunity to raise the profile of cancer in peo-

World Cancer Day is a unique day in the year when the world can unite under a single theme to highlight the on-going fight against cancer. It takes place every year on 4 February. World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising cancer awareness in the general public and pressing all governments to take action against the disease. Why World Cancer Day is so important Put simply, because the global cancer epidemic is huge and is set to rise. In 2012, 8.2 million people died from cancer worldwide, out of which, 4 million people died prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years). If urgent action is not taken to raise awareness about the disease and, globally, we do not implement strategies to address cancer, then by 2025, this is projected to increase to an alarming 6 million premature cancer deaths per year.

5 Simple Ways to Increase Your Intelligence 1. Minimize Television Watching – This is a hard sell. People love vegetating in front

to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy. Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate more easily. 3. Read Challenging Books – Many peo-

of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity OR allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise. When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax. 2. Exercise – I used

ple like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to look up

a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style. Once you get used to reading challenging books, I think you’ll find that you aren’t tempted to go back to page-turners. The challenge of learning new ideas is far more exciting than any tacky suspense-thriller. 4. Early to Bed, Early to Rise – Nothing

makes it harder to concentrate than sleep deprivation. You’ll be most rejuvenated if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late and compensate by sleeping late, you’ll wake up lethargic and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most tranquil and productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes your mental acuity all day.

If you have the opportunity, take 10-20 minute naps when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness. Anything longer will make you lethargic, but a short nap will refresh you. 5. Take Time to Reflect – Often our lives get so hectic that we become overwhelmed without even realizing it. It becomes difficult to concentrate because nagging thoughts keep interrupting. Spending some time alone in reflection gives you a chance organize your thoughts and prioritize your responsibilities. Afterwards, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s important and what isn’t. The unimportant stuff won’t bother you anymore and your mind will feel less encumbered. I’m not saying you need to sit on the floor cross-legged and chant ‘ommm’. Anything that allows a bit of prolonged solitude will do. One of my personal favorites is taking a solitary walk. Someone famous said, “All the best ideas occur while walking.” I think he was on to something. Experiment to find

Seems like Bangaloreans have found a new way to celebrate Republic Day with a Clean up drive was organized by the Jakkur Plantation Road residents and Volunteers of the Krishna Byre Gowda’s office and BBMP, Byatrayanapura Zone, making the 26th January an even more auspicious day. Smt Meenakshi Sheshadri, the better half of Minister and MLA Shree Krishna Byre Gowda, hoisted the flag at 9am. The volunteers included the residents of all age groups who engaged in the clearing of the road, dust, plastic and Parthenium was encouraged. Shiva Kumar, from KBG’s office and a resident of Jakkur said, “About 150 volunteers gathered and this road is a half to 1 km road that required some attention, with may vacant plats that are huge and the residents

are fighting the threat of reptiles and garbage dump”, he continues, “ We had about 45-50 BBMP pourakarmikas and other staff, who also come over to help us with the cleaning drive”. The layout is filled with a lot of well off residents who have shown a genuine concern to get their neighborhood cleaned. Many who completed the cleaning went back home with more satisfaction on their faces, after job was accomplished and could’nt wait to thank Meenashi for all the efforts put in to get the funds to have the road cleaned up. To keep the momentum going the residents plan a public private partnership, to ensure that the program is a sustainable one. Meenakshi was honored by Sobha President and ITC CEO, with more plants to make Bangalore a greener city to live in.

TATA Nagar all set for Urban Horticulture The Horticulture also personally distributed some kits to encourage the residents to grow their own fruits and vegetables at the small spaces they have. Some of the senior citizens of our association such as Mr Raman Kutti, 79 and Dr Smt Sujatha Mohan Kumar who is 69, were given the kit personally by Shri Krishna Byre Gowda”. Shri Krishna Byre Gowda, very candidly said, “ We are very pleased to let you know that there are many schemes that the Horticulture Department wants to promote and these schemes will help residences identify 5-6 residents amongst their own layout who are very passionate about improving

the greenery in the layout and they will be given subsidy to continue the good work, so please make use of such opportunities”. At this occasion Mr Narayan also took the opportunity to ask Shri Krishna Byre Gowda to organize for another “Hasiru Santhe” to keep the momentum on and to encourage Greenery amongst children too. All in all the residents were very pleased by the initiative asked for another round of the same program for more number of residents to participate and learn from and were very proud of Shri Krishna Byre Gowda for his initiatives.

POLICE & PUBLIC

Police Talk- Lock Up. The police must give an arrested card to the Magistrate of the person accused and arrested. This card may hold information on his/ her background information such as his name, address, and the reason for the arrest and when the arrest had taken place etc, details must be furnished to the police. If the arrested is not let out within 24 hours then the police may have to get an order from the court to station the accused in the jail premises. This is called as a police custody remand. There is a sense of curiosity to know what happens once the accused is jailed. within 24 hours of arrest, the police may approach the magistrate to issue an order for the extension for stay of the arrested. The judge may issue a bail based on the case presented or may extend the jail term.

As per CRPC and IPC, if the person is arrested then clear distinction is made whether the arrested requires a bail or not. Once the bail is acquired the arrested may be released immediately. If in case a bail cannot be issued then,

You may now be curious to know how they get jailed even without the case being solved, but some times evidences clearly show that the case is most predictable such as in cases of murder, dacoity, terrorism, naxalites etc

The enquiry must be continued and may hold him back for a week or two for further questioning. Once the remand term is completed they may further produce him before the Judge and extend the remand or may choose to hand him over to the custody of the Judiciary. Judicial Custody means, where the arrested is under the wings of the Judiciary. Some times when the police knows that the arrested person’s life may be under threat, then the police may choose to request the court for his custody. Once the application is processed the court may choose to jail him further. Once they are in the lock up of the police station it is called as the police custody.

BESCOM speedy solutions to problems a bit cumbersome to pay your monthly electricity bills, don’t worry. Now you can pay the bill literally at your doorstep!

But recently I when I faced a problem and reluctantly lodged a complaint with the BESCOM I was in for a pleasant surprise with their immediately response to the problem with eagerness and enthusiasm, this has forced me to give them a thumb’s up. Many that I have been speaking to have been giving a lot of credit to BESCOM and now they have another feather in their. BESCOM is giving meter readers the authority to collect electricity bill payments from households If you don’t find time to visit the nearest Bangalore One center or if you find the online option

Good bye Polio……

then they shall not be allotted a bail and the jail term be extended. At times the police request for the extension from the court as they want to investigate the case further before the accused is left on bail, Example if 5 people are involved in a dacoity and only 2 people are arrested, then the police get clues from the two arrested are questioned to get clues on the where about of the rest.

On occasion that the accused is jailed for a non cognizable case then the accused persons details must be taken down and may be released. If they are arrested on a cognizable case then the person may be released on a bail, if required.

There may be many of you like me, who have been victims of BESCOM apathy especially when you lodge the complaint, which was never attended and the matter had to be pursued with reminders.

February 01 to 08, 2014

In a first-of-its kind initiative aimed at making bill collection a customer-friendly process, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) will authorise its meter readers (the per-

sonnel who deliver your monthly electricity bills by reading your meters) to collect payments directly from the consumers at the latter’s premises. The initiative, which will kick off in March this year, comes in the backdrop of the fact that more than 95 per cent of the total 83 lakh BESCOM consumers are yet to switch over to the online mode of payment. However, the new system is not mandatory and only those who would like to skip standing in long queues at the counters can opt for the novel initiative while the others could still visit the nearest BESCOM center and pay bills. B L Guru Prasad, BESCOM Director (Finance) explained, “The new concept of spot collection of power bills was first introduced at Bangarpet Circle in Kolar district a couple of months ago.

Today India is a polio-free nation, yet the authorities wanted to ensure that sustained efforts to vaccinate children below five years against polio. Hence made an earnest effort to continue their endless journey to walk from house to house, identify children below the age of 5 years, migratory workers etc to ensure efficiency in bringing an end to the disease. To create awareness among the citizens about the drive, which was on 19th January and 23rd February ‘14, led by Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana, banners, posters, pamphlets, and hoardings have been used to create awareness, besides advertisements on television and radio we used to campaign for success. According to BBMP, around 10.76 lakh children are below the age of five years have been identified for the polio drive in all the 198 wards. The drive was taken up through BBMP’s referral hospiFollowing the splendid response there, we are emulating the same system across BESCOM limits. The existing meter readers will don the role of bill collectors and issue spot receipts from their hand-held billing machines. The transactions will be immediately uploaded to our accounts software through the GPRS system.” BESCOM expects the move to become popular with apartments and gated communities as payments can be directly made to the their personnel instead of risking handing over huge amounts to apartment staff for payment. Guru

tals, maternity hospitals, family welfare centres in the city, anganwadis, pharmacies, health centres, malls, railway and bus stations, Cubbon Park, Lalbagh, community halls and schools. To cover all the identified children, 2,768 booths have been set up, as many as 466 stationary teams and 395 mobile teams. Over 12,794 vaccination workers will be involved in the drive, which will be overseen by 640 officials deputed at the booth levels. To ensure that there is success of the drive, volunteers from service organisations such as Rotary and Lions, self-help groups and non-governmental organisations were urged to join hands with the BBMP officials and elected representatives. Thanks to the Immunization team, Health Department, BBMP for all the efforts they took to come to our houses to immunize every child in our area.

Prasad clarified that there will not be any additional financial burden as the company will be using only existing meter readers in urban areas and Gram Vidyut Pratinidhis (GVP) in rural areas. “Already, our meter readers have been provided with handheld meter reading and billing machines to generate bills and the same will be used to generate receipts for payment. The only expenditure is to provide additional paper rolls for generating receipts, which we will print and distribute to meter readers,” he explained.
