COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS DETROIT ANNUAL CONFERENCE REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS 2012 The Committee on Nominations is pleased to present its slate of conference agency members elected at the 2012 Detroit Annual Conference. We are delighted by the talent included in this report. Please note the following details: 1. Terms begin the year listed after the individual’s name, following the conclusion of Annual Conference. 2. Agency vacancies are indicated by empty lines on the roster. 3. Nominations are accepted throughout the year by our secretary, Michelle Walkup. Applications are available at the end of this report or by visiting the conference website at http://www.detroitconference.org/pages/detail/1927 and clicking “Nominee Application” on the left side of the page. Descriptions of each agency are also available at http://www.detroitconference.org/pages/detail/1928. 4. Standing Rules provides that: a. Each agency shall review its membership annually to identify members who have not functioned. After consultation with the person(s) involved, any removals from the agencies are to be in the Conference Nominations Secretary’s possession by January 10. b. Those agencies who wish to suggest nominees to the Committee on Nominations for the following year must forward their nominees to the Conference Nominations Secretary by January 10 each year. c. The names of all persons elected or appointed by districts, UMM, UMW, CCYM, or “Other Agencies” shall be forwarded to the Conference Nominations Secretary by March 15. The Committee on Nominations has scheduled the following dates for meetings: June 8, 2012 October 19, 2012 January 18, 2013 February 15, 2013 March 15, 2013 May 2013 (at Annual Conference in Adrian) All meetings are scheduled for 9:00am at the Flint Regional Office. The Committee on Nominations will offer a new approach this year for identifying talent and continually seeks passionate members for every agency. Daily Proceedings 2012 FIRST DAY – PROCEEDINGS THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2012 The forty-fourth session of the Detroit Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church was called to order at 3:38 p.m. by Bishop Jonathon Keaton, resident bishop of the Michigan Area, in Herrick Chapel, Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan. The theme of the conference was “Imagine A World …Healing-Healthy-Whole.” Opening worship service: was held at Herrick Chapel. Taek Kim and Ruby Anderson were liturgists. Dave Howland was choir director, and Naki Sung Kripfgans was the organist. Gathering Music was provided by the Ann Arbor Korean UMC in the form of drumming and liturgical dance. The scripture was 2 Kings 4:8-37. Opening worship service offering is designated for Haiti Hot Lunch and Judith Craig Children’s Home, Liberia. The total amount received was $7,613. Bishop Keaton’s sermon was entitled “Divine Health Initiatives.” The service concluded with Holy Communion with Bishop Keaton as celebrant. The clergy session was called to order at 7:00 p.m. in Dawson Auditorium by Bishop Jonathan Keaton. Bishop Keaton led the session in opening prayer. Jim Kellerman, chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry, led the Clergy session in song and prayer. The sermon title was, “There’s Seeing and There’s Seeing.” The business session was convened at 9:25 a.m. in Dawson Auditorium by Bishop Jonathan Keaton. Joanne Bartelt opened in prayer. Organization of the annual conference was led by Marsha Woolley, chairperson of the Conference Program Committee. She thanked David and Nona Church for the international flags that were hung around the auditorium. Motion: Marsha Woolley moved that the bar of the conference be established as the main floor, stage and center section of the balcony of Dawson Auditorium. Motion adopted. Committee on Standing Rules: Peter Bartlett, chairperson, reported. Motion: I move that the Standing Rules and Structure as they appear in the 2011 Conference Journal, together with the changes made to the Standing Rules and Structure section of the 2012 Voting Items booklet, and with the provisions of the 2008 Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church become the by-laws of the Detroit Annual Conference. On matter of procedure, when these rules and the Discipline are silent, Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised version used at the 2008 General Conference shall be effective. 59

Treasurer’s Report: David Dobbs, conference treasurer, discussed the finances of the Detroit Annual Conference. Point of Personal Privilege was granted to Jeff Nelson. General Conference Delegation Report: Jackie Euper, delegation chairperson, gave a report of the 2012 General Conference in Tampa, Florida. A video was shown that highlighted the work of the General Conference to Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World. The conference thanked the delegates and alternates to the General Conference for the long hours of work. Delegates will be in each Legislative Section to do a presentation about work of the General Conference. North Central Jurisdictional Pool Nomination: Joy Barrett moved the adoption of the North Central Jurisdictional Pool for Nomination to jurisdictional agencies and committees. Motion adopted. Detroit Annual Conference Nominations – North Central Jurisdiction (Nominations to the pool from which persons are selected to General Agencies of the United Methodist Church). In total, the annual conference must nominate at least 15 and not more than 45 persons per the United Methodist Book of Discipline 2008, ¶705.1b, page 479. Teaching Time: Marsha Woolley introduced Shannon Trilli, the director of Global Health programs for The United Methodist Committee on Relief to lead a teaching time on our health initiatives. After a general introduction to overseas health conditions, Shannon told us about the Imagine No Malaria program, and how it partners with the inter-faith based health distribution system in Africa. Recessed for break and reconvened at 4:15 p.m. Love Offering for Nothing But Nets was received from those present at the conference session. Marsha Wooley prayed a blessing on Shannon Trilli for her work and the offering collected. Shannon graciously received the offering. Introduction: Jerry DeVine introduced Benton Heisler, West Michigan Director of Connectional Ministries. The conference welcomed him. He brought greetings from the West Michigan Conference. Conference Leadership Team Report was given by Jerry DeVine, conference director of connectional ministry. He and the team introduced the beginnings of a five year plan to create new and dynamic congregations in Michigan. A video was shared on new church development. The New Church Development Committee has set three goals to create new places for new faces. To create two new faith communities every year, recruit and equip new disciples and reflect the diversity of the communities in local churches. Vital Church Initiative was discussed. It is a process of renewal for growing healthy and fruitful congregations in the Michigan Area of the United Methodist Church. Another pathway would be to push to develop active members that are truly disciples. Local churches would engage in direct mission work, including key mission partnerships. Covenant Relationship: Brian Williams made a report on our covenant relationship with the Haiti District of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas. He introduced Rev. Chrisnel LeLievre, a pastor in Haiti. He brought greetings from the Methodist Church in Haiti and thanked the Detroit Conference for being an important part of the work of the church in Haiti.

He asked for more contact from the members of annual conference giving information of talents and gifts for nominating members to proper committees and agencies. Motion: Jeff Regan moved to permit Carol Johns to extend her term on the Conference Finance and Administration for an additional 4 years and remain our chairperson for the purpose of continuity and support for our financial ministries in this time of transition from the ministry of Anna Morford to our new conference treasurer, David Dobbs. Motion adopted. Council on Finance & Administration: Carol Johns, chair of CFA, reported on the work of CFA. She introduced David Dobbs, the new Detroit Annual Conference Treasurer. Motion: Carol Johns moved to adopt the CFA report. Motion adopted. Conference Board of Pensions and Health Benefits: Don Emmert, Conference Benefit Officer, presented a report on conference pensions and benefits. The report was titled “For Your Benefit(s) 2012 edition.” General Conference modified the Clergy Retirement Security Program. Don noted the decline in receipts for the Pension Apportionments. However, for the fourth year the Pensions apportioned remained the same. The Virgin Healthmiles Activity Program continues to bring benefits to participants and local churches, which include a positive trend in lower medical and RX costs indicating healthier lives. Don again encouraged the support of the Central Conference Pension Initiative. United Methodist Communications: Paul Thomas, Conference Director of Communications, introduced Jackie Vaughn, from the Impact Community of the New Church Initiative of the United Methodist Communications. She shared a video entitled “We Grow Storytellers,” about the current work of United Methodist Communications in moving forward in communicating the stories of the ministry of the United Methodist Church and making new disciples for Jesus Christ. Melanie Carey, Detroit Renaissance District Superintendent, shared with the conference that there will be a day of service in Detroit in partnership with the United Methodist Communications on October 6, 2012, entitled “Hands 4 Detroit.” It will be a part of their District Conference. Introductions: Jackie Euper, General Board of Global Ministries, introduced missionaries assigned to work in Michigan, Charissa Shawcross, Katie Peterson, Devin Hanson, Joseph Bradley and Sonya Luna. Lay Leader Report: Mike Clark, Conference Lay Leader, introduced members of the Commission on Laity and described their work. Mike encouraged us to establish team Partnerships for Ministries. Mike introduced the new Conference Lay Leader elect, Wayne Bank and Conference Director of Lay Speaking elect–Bob Hampton, and the West Michigan Conference Lay Leader, Lori Dahlman. The conference thanked Mike Clark for serving as the Conference Lay Leader. The Board of Global Ministries Report: Dorothy Thon, chairperson of the Board of Global Ministries, introduced Karen Ujereh, Mission Interpreter in Residence for North Central Jurisdictional. The conference welcomed her. Karen Williams, chairperson of the advance, announced there were 128 Spot Spotlight Churches, including 26 new Spotlight Churches. United Methodist Men: Mel Scott, of the Detroit Conference United Methodist Men, reported the Detroit Annual Conference UMM took the top honors for funds for the St. Andrew Project. The UMM are planning two potatoes drops this year. United Methodist Women: Linda Schramm, conference president of the United Methodist Women, shared a video that promoted the United Methodist Woman created by John Reynolds. She announced that the 2012 General Conference changed the structure of the United Methodist Women in the general church, conference, district and local church. Young Adult Report: Brandon Smith, chairperson of the Young Adult Commission, and members of the commission, addressed the questions: What is a young adult? and What do young adults want from the Church? Ben Bower, Kayla Rossa, Alex Plum, Alyssa Grant shared their personal stories that highlighted the ministry and work of young adults in various settings. Brandon challenged conference members to have a conversation with a young adult in their church. Bishop Keaton and the conference prayed over the young adults. Recessed at 10:02 for a 15 minute break. Recognition of Chaplains: Tim Hastings invited the 16 chaplains present to introduce themselves. Celebrations of Bishop Keaton’s ministry will be held at St. Ignace on Saturday, August 25 and at Redeemer UMC in DeWitt on August 26. Youth 2011 Video: Ang Hart, Council Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, introduced a video about a conference youth trip to Purdue University for Youth 2011. Black College Fund: A video was presented about the colleges and community ministries receiving support from the Black College Fund apportionment. District Superintendent’s Report was given by Joanne Bartelt, dean of the cabinet. Here titled was, “Give Us Something to Do.” At the end, a musical number was presented by persons from the many choir camps in which Terry Gladstone was involved. (see full report journal p. 279). John Buxton Leadership Award: for outstanding creative leadership was presented by David Dobbs to Jerry Devine. Recessed at 9:30 a.m. for a 20 minute break. Liberia Truck Report: Margie Crawford, Hunger/UMCOR coordinator, reported that preconference funds for the Liberian Truck $41,400. $12,132.26 has been raised at the conference for the Liberia Truck, with a total of 53,500 for the truck. She offered a prayer of thanksgiving for the support of this important ministry. Conference Council on Youth Ministries: Isaac Garrigues-Cortelyou, CCYM president, and other members of the council thanked the conference for their support. They reported on the various ministries carried out by the council. $35,000 was raised for SPLASH out of a goal of $500,000. Penny Palooza raised $441.04, with Marquette District raising the most money. A confirmation rally was not held this past year, but will held in the coming year. The theme will be “Y”UMC and YUMC. The reading and setting of the appointments was led by Bishop Keaton with additions and corrections made by the District Superintendents. Joanne Bartelt introduced Neal Davis, the Dean of the West Michigan Conference cabinet. Bishop Keaton thanked Grant Lobb for his seven years of service and Andrew Allie for his interim service to the Detroit Annual Conference as district superintendents. He announced eHTara Sutton, the Crossroads District’s new district superintendent and Elbert Dulworth, the Marquette District’s new district superintendent. Bishop Keaton thanked Joanne Bartelt for a fine year of serving as dean of the cabinet for the last year. Bishop Keaton announced the election of Mark Spaw as the dean of the cabinet. Bishop Keaton prayed over the appointment for 2011 and set the appointments. 67

We elected our officers in October: a. Rev. Brent Webster: President b. Mr. Rob Long: Vice President c. Mr. David Dobbs: Treasurer d. Mr. Donnal Hammond: Secretary All conference owned parsonages inspected and found them to be in good condition. We renewed a lease for the Missionary for the Hispanic/Latino Ministries parsonage through June 2012. We continue to perfect the Parsonage Guidelines that we use for conference owned parsonages and encourage churches and districts to use them as well so that we have uniformity in parsonage standards. We welcome suggestions concerning the guidelines. We met with representatives of Church Mutual Insurance for an annual loss/risk management review. We bid farewell to Anna Morford for her fine work with the Board and welcomed Mr. David Dobbs onto the Board of Trustees in his role as Conference Treasurer. We renewed property and liability insurance for conference owned properties. The following churches of the Detroit Conference were merged in 2011 a. Curran UMC merged with Mio UMC June 12, 2011
