2013 DETC Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni
Introduction There is no more gratifying aspect of our work in the Distance Education and Training Council than to read about the success of the graduates of our accredited institutions. Our success is best viewed through the lens of what happened to those whose lives we have touched: did they put their knowledge and skills to work to make a better life for themselves and their loved ones? Did they achieve their goals? This DETC brochure is our most important contribution to the outcomes measurement literature. It is our testimony to why DETC institutions play a vital role in making the world a better place. It is our proof that what we do is worthwhile for society and for individuals. Thirty-four exceptional distance study graduates were selected by the institutions they attended. Selection criteria included the graduates’ academic records and the level and quality of their contributions to society and to their chosen professions. We’ve also included entries on nine Famous Alumni for 2013. We join with all the DETC-accredited institutions in saluting the outstanding achievements of these unique men and women who represent more than two million distance education students now studying with DETC members.

Allied National High School
Billi Ann Ardister
Laguna Hills, California . . . she earned her high school diploma
Billi Ann Ardister was a new military spouse moving to Germany with her husband when she decided to take the first step towards a career by enrolling in Allied National High School’s (ANHS) diploma program. In three years, Billi was able to complete the program with a 3.4 GPA. Billi moved to a military base in Germany with her husband, but needed to finish school and do it at a reasonable price. The military was going to help her pay for school, but it was challenging to find a school that was going to give Billi an actual diploma and not a high school equivalency credential. ANHS helped Billi achieve the most important part of her goals, a diploma, and she did not have to break the bank to pay for it either. Billi stresses that her teachers were amazing, helpful, and very understanding. She will forever greatly appreciate ANHS for helping her earn a high school diploma. “I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the way ANHS helped me to achieve my dreams, I will always be grateful to them.”

Now, with his DBA from Apollos University he is helping to prepare future professionals for true success within industry. Having graduated with a 3.93 GPA, Dr. Naddy is using his DBA and 12+ years of professional experience, which includes “Big 4” public accounting and international private industry, to bring “real world” accounting and business strategy to his students. Ashworth College
Brytni Cutler
Foristell, Missouri
. . . distance learning brought education and life skills home Growing up on a farm, Brytni Cutler is appreciative of the educational foundation her parents provided her and her seven siblings (she is the second oldest). Homeschooled from grades three through 12, it was natural for this “Show Me” state native to continue her education with Ashworth College. At-Home Professions
Christina Hixson
Long Beach, California . . . her part time job adds supplemental income Networking works! Christina Hixson, who manages a dental office, mentioned her At-Home Professions medical transcription training to a dental patient. The patient, also an At-Home Professions graduate, had a contact. That’s how Christina found her after-hours, part-time transcription job. At home, she prepares cardiology, ear-nose-and-throat and neurology reports. Seeking a new challenge, Christina began At-Home Professions’ medical transcription course while working full-time at the dental office. In 2010, she finished the course (cumulative score: 94%). Even before graduating, she started subcontracting with a local transcription service. She types 20-30 hours a week in the evenings and on weekends. In three years, her line rate has risen from eight to 10 cents. With an 11 year-old and a 16 year-old, Christina credits her husband for making this second job manageable. She says she couldn’t have completed her education without her husband, who helps with meals, homework and picking up the slack. Moving ahead, Christina may start looking for her own transcription clients. “The At-Home Professions course is easy to learn. I was taught what I needed to know to do the work. Now I have a nice, supplemental income; and the medical terminology helps me in the dental office!” 2013 Outstanding Graduate Program - DETC, 1601 18th St., NW, Suite 2, Washington, D.C. 20009

Catholic Distance University
Stephen Hill
Banyo, Brisbane, Australia
. . . distance learning made the impossible possible
Stephen Hill, from Brisbane, Australia, earned 4.0 grade-point average in Catholic Distance University’s (CDU’s) Master of Arts Degree in Theology, making excellent use of CDU’s asynchronous online courses to pursue an advanced degree in a demanding field. Stephen holds a Bachelor of Microelectronic Engineering. While working as an engineer, he began theological studies at CDU. In 2007, he was ordained an Anglican priest, but by 2012 his theological views led to a desire for full communion with the Catholic Church. His decision coincided with Pope Benedict XVI’s creation of an Anglican Ordinariate that allows Anglicans to become Catholics and retain features of their Anglican tradition. He will be ordained the first Catholic priest in Australia’s new Anglican Ordinariate in 2013. Stephen believes that CDU demonstrates well what the Catholic Church teaches about the essential relationship between faith and reason. CDU’s distance format serves that mission very well. “Distance learning tears down the barrier of location from learning. I was privileged to study under world-renowned professors on the other side of the world, all from the comfort of home. Put simply, distance learning makes the impossible possible.”

Columbia Southern University
Julie Carter
Metairie, Louisiana . . . she made a difference by educating people on working safely
Julie Carter, corporate environmental health and safety director with The Mundy Companies, has accomplished much since graduating in 2010 from Columbia Southern University. Aside from her current management post, another leadership position Carter secured is the chair of the Construction Division of the National Safety Council. Carter, who graduated with a 4.0 GPA, has achieved much in the OSH field including her superb efforts as the safety manager for the IHNC surge barrier project in New Orleans in 2011. Her efforts with the barrier, which was built to protect the city from hurricanes, helped lead to it becoming one of Popular Science’s top 2011 engineering projects. She is a strong advocate of workplace safety and a no-nonsense approach, she said, because it’s the right thing to do. “CSU met or exceeded my expectations through the bachelor’s degree program. I am finding the same to be true in the master’s program.”

Concord Law School of Kaplan University
Somita Basu Singapore
. . . she earned a JD while abroad
Law school had been an attractive option for Somita Basu when she graduated from college, but she started working, was successful and didn’t think of leaving work to earn a JD. After taking a break to raise a family, Somita found she was intellectually restless—until she found Concord Law School. Living in Singapore, hampered by time zone differences, she assumed her legal education would be a solitary experience, but classmates reached out and friendships developed. She also followed the dictates of the program. Students can listen to classes via archive, but Somita attended ’live’ to actively participate. With a background in financial services, Somita’s law degree became the catalyst for a career change. She is working in law firm strategic communications in Singapore and hopes that will translate into opportunities in the U.S. when it’s time to return home. Somita also plans to do pro-bono work, as one of the main reasons she studied law was to help others. “As an American abroad, I can now effectively argue that while our system may be flawed, it’s still the best one. It’s not just our Constitution that is exemplary but it’s the body of judicial decisions that have interpreted it.” 2013 Outstanding Graduate Program - DETC, 1601 18th St., NW, Suite 2, Washington, D.C. 20009

Kayleigh Holt received her high school diploma from The Hadley School for the Blind, an international distance education school. She enrolled in the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in sixth grade and began taking courses through Hadley in 2010 to earn her high school diploma. Kayleigh plans to continue her education and attend a university to become a Palm Signing Interpreter for the Deaf and Blind. “Knowing that my diploma was on the horizon was like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. James Madison High School
Sherry Evans
Fitzgerald, Georgia . . . distance learning fit her schedule
At 43 years of age, Sherry Evans is the mother of two, happily married for 24 years, and a graduate of James Madison High School. She had three distinct reasons going back for her diploma: to better herself, to find a better paying job, and to make her family proud. Growing up, Sherry’s mother was a single mom supporting her family by working two and three jobs to make ends meet. Neither of her parents or siblings completed high school, making Sherry the first to earn her diploma. In hindsight she feels that she would have benefited from someone encouraging her to continue her education. The importance of graduating is something she has worked to instill in her own children. As a working mother herself, Sherry chose distance learning and James Madison High School because of its flexibility to meet the demands of her responsibilities as a wife and mother while continuing to work and to help provide for her family. “As a wife and working mother, I chose James Madison High School and distance learning because it fit my schedule and gave me the flexibility I needed to earn my diploma.”

. . . her educational goal was strong enough to withstand hurricanes
In summer 2010, Raquel Gasaway began fulfilling a professional dream by completing McKinley College’s Associate degree in Human Resources. By the end of 2012, she’d built on that success by earning a Bachelor’s degree in the same field. Next goal? A Master’s degree. She persevered because of her passion for Human Resources, which she sees as a field promoting “equal opportunity, equal employment—equal period.” Raquel has worked at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) for 14 years, currently as a Library Specialist. Her McKinley degree helped her earn a promotion. She hopes to move into UTMB HR, starting as a recruiter, but with her eyes on management. “McKinley was the foundation I needed to move ahead in my education, my personal life and my job. It’s helped me advance up the ladder at work. I’m climbing that ladder to see where it takes me.”
