mourning the fallen

The more observant among you may have noticed I’ve been a bit quiet the past couple of months. Late last year I was driving to the Motorfest Dine With Your Ride Charity Dinner when I began to see smoke and flames coming out from underneath the back of my Porsche. I coasted to a smoky stop in the Publix parking lot off highway 98 at Grand Boulevard. The South Walton Fire department responded at about 4:35 p.m. and put the fire out, but the 1987 930 Turbo from the front cover of our very first Motorfest Magazine, issue number 000001, was destroyed. The Porsche 930 Turbo was the ultimate race car of its time and to this day is still regarded

very highly by past and present rivals. The 930 is a machine that must be driven – human input is required, desired and essential. My old 930 Turbo had a real personality. I had to earn its trust and respect before the 930 would let me experience its true nature. The car had a cadence when you drove it; more like a dancing partner, rather than an extension of ones self. You had to become accustomed to the music, once mastered the reward was the unbridled power of this car. I’ve joined the lucky club where they say you’re lucky to be alive, you can always find a new 911. To me, it’s not a happy ending or the end of the story.
