ost your next meeting, conference or event in Halifax and enjoy outstanding amenities and quality suppliers in a picturesque seaside location. Meeting planners agree that Halifax events consistently attract high delegate attendance – people hear great things about our city and are excited to come here.

You’ll notice what makes Halifax unique as soon as you arrive. Originally founded as a British garrison town, Halifax retains its colonial charm. Cobblestone sidewalks meander past whimsical boutiques; beautiful historic buildings are home to fabulous restaurants, cozy coffee shops, trendy galleries, rollicking pubs and fascinating museums.

As Atlantic Canada’s entertainment and cultural capital, live music spills out onto the city streets every night of the week. Halifax is a perfect mix of old and new worlds, where modern office towers of glass and steel stand beside historic buildings that once stored privateers’ booty. Delegates will follow in the footsteps of princes and press gangs as they stroll through the safe, walkable downtown exploring over 250 years of Halifax history.

Accommodations, food and beverage have all been described as good value for price paid, making Halifax an appealing and competitive alternative destination. Maritime hospitality is world famous and we welcome visitors with a warm smile and a professional, accommodating attitude. Pre and post conference activities abound with experiences for everyone from the adventurer to the romantic. Your group can easily enjoy urban flair and coastal retreats in the same day!

Halifax has proven itself as a destination of choice for business travellers. The heart of Halifax has more than 3500 hotel rooms. Almost 1/3 of these are conveniently connected by an enclosed pedway system to our premier meeting facility, the World Trade and Convention Centre.

Wherever you choose to stay, you’re never far from the picturesque Halifax Harbour. Vibrant and inviting, the waterfront is one of the most memorable spots in the city. Stroll along the boardwalk. Shop at the boutiques and seaside Farmer’s market. Sail aboard a tall ship. You’ll understand why people love coming to Halifax.

TREAT YOU R DE LEGATES TO A DESTINAT ION RICH W IT H HISTORY AND HERITAGE On April 15, 1912, RMS Titanic, thought to be an “unsinkable ship”, went down on its maiden voyage. During the 2012 centennial, Halifax will pay tribute to its connection to the Titanic story with various commemorative events in addition to the city’s permanent and Titanic-themed experiences and exhibits. • Founded in 1749 by Colonel Edward Cornwallis and 3,000 settlers, Halifax is one of the oldest English speaking Canadian cities, named for Lord Halifax, President of the British Board of Trade at the time.

• Prince Edward, 4th son of George III, left Halifax a rich architectural legacy including the Old Town Clock (1803), the round St. George’s Anglican Church (1800) and the Prince of Wales Martello Tower (1797).

• With the world’s second-largest natural harbour and an imposing hill overlooking the city, Halifax was the perfect place to build a British stronghold on the western North Atlantic.

• The 1830s brought the first Irish Catholics to Halifax, a previously Protestant city.

• In 1750, Dartmouth was founded. Established in 1752, the Halifax to Dartmouth ferry service is now North America’s oldest, continuously-running saltwater ferry system. • The American Revolution led waves of immigrants, especially New England Loyalists to Halifax. From 1783 to 1785, more than 3000 black loyalists who fought for the British in the war of 1812 arrived, the start of a thriving black community in Halifax.

• In 1835, local publisher Joseph Howe’s Novascotian printed a letter accusing Halifax politicians and police of pocketing funds. Charged with “libel”, his case seemed hopeless since truth was not a defense. Howe eloquently addressed the jury for over six hours citing many cases of civic corruption, speaking about the importance of “press freedom”. His acquittal was a landmark in the evolution of Canada’s freedom of the press. • The Halifax Public Gardens was planted in 1837. Victorian pathways, colourful flowerbeds and bandstand delight visitors

even today. Point Pleasant Park (in city’s south end) was part of the Duke of Kent’s defense systems. Queen Victoria leased it to Halifax for 999 years. Annual rent of one shilling is still paid by Halifax’s mayor to the British Monarch, represented by Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant Governor. • In 1917, a Belgian relief vessel collided with a French munitions carrier in Halifax Harbour during World War I. This Halifax Explosion was the world’s largest man-made explosion before Hiroshima. Over 1500 people died; 13,000 homes and businesses damaged or destroyed. Every year, Nova Scotia sends a large Christmas tree to Boston as thanks for coming to our aid in the aftermath. This tree is featured in Boston’s annual kick off to Christmas and stands proudly on the Boston Common. • Halifax’s maritime history is showcased in permanent exhibits at the Maritime Museum

of the Atlantic, including exhibits dedicated to the Halifax Explosion and our connection to the Titanic (1912) disaster. • During WWII, Halifax reinforced its position as a strategic port by accommodating dozens of fleets/convoys of naval vessels en route to Europe. • From 1928 to 1971, more than one million people – immigrants, wartime evacuees, refugees, troops, war brides and their children – walked through the “gateway to Canada” when they passed through the doors of Halifax’s Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

Other Halifax and Area “firsts”… • First public school in Canada • Oldest farmer’s market in North America (1750) • First Board of Trade in North America (1752) • First newspaper in Canada (1752) • First Post Office in North America (1755) • First seat of democratic government in Canada (1758) • First naval dockyard in North America (1759) • First to develop official rules for ice hockey (1800) • 1813 - General Robert Ross buried in Halifax. He burned the White House in Washington, DC, resulting in the writing of the Star Spangled Banner and the painting of the president’s house white.

• Two of Canada’s major banks were founded here: the Bank of Nova Scotia, 1832; and the Royal Bank of Canada (formerly Merchant Bank), 1864 • The steel ice skate (clip-on design) invented by John Forbes, foreman at the Starr Manufacturing Company, Dartmouth (1867) • Canada’s first law school (1884) and art college (1887) • First all electric city lights in North America (1890) • Canada’s first common-user container terminal opens: “Halifax South End Container Terminal” (1970)

ake Nova Scotia wine part of your conference! Impress your guests’ palate with local wines on your menus. Pair a wine tasting seminar with local culinary delights at your hospitality suite. Incorporate a winery tour into your companion program, or offer as a pre or post conference group tour. Nova Scotia’s rich tradition of growing grapes for wine making dates back to the 1600’s. Several regions of our province have been professionally producing grapes and beautiful wines for almost 25 years. The moderating effects of the Atlantic Ocean and the rich agricultural belts located around our province create lush vineyards whose wine products now garner international acclaim. Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley includes a strong agricultural community built upon fertile soil reclaimed from the sea using a system of dykes built along the shores of tidal rivers. The harvests from our wineries produce award-winning white, red, fruit, sparkling and ice wines.

Along the Northumberland Shore, experience the strong connection this province still has to its Scottish roots. Every summer, the hills echo with the sounds of fiddles, bagpipes and drums ringing in one of many Scottish Ceilidhs. The Eastern Shore is a playground for nature lovers. Explore magnificent unspoiled beaches and discover inlets, marshes and estuaries that teem with birds and wildlife.

The rugged coastline with its bays, islands, and sparkling clear water is a world-class destination for sea-kayakers. Taste our bounty at one of our famous lobster suppers, or treat your taste buds to wild blueberries, maple syrup, fine wine and fresh produce. The combination of these two diverse trails makes Northumberland Shore & Eastern Shore a nature and adventure lover’s delight and provides some excellent options for getaway meetings and conventions.
