INTRODUCTION B Y T H E E D I TO R The beginning of this endeavor comes at a very interesting and vital moment for photography: it has at last gained universal acceptance as one of the with its companion, cinema, it is the most characteristic art of our age. Also, together with the dominance of digital photography, the very nature of the art has changed. Very little photography (apart from documentary and news photography) is now done without are some notable exceptions,) and often the resulting image bears practically no resemblance to the original shot. Thus photography is now closer than ever to its etymological sense: writing, or painting, of every conceivable kind of “painting with light” is taking place around us. So we consider that the launching of this publication could not have come at a more propitious time.
and travel photographers from many countries, and advertising, fashion, portrait, nude, still life, nature, abstract, macro, documentary and many kinds of experimental photography are also well-represented. A special mention should be made of wedding photography. While for many years it was scorned as a poor cousin, as the most mundane type of everyday “work photography”, it has been elevated in recent years, by a number of talented practitioners, especially in East Asia, to a true art form. And we have in this book some impressive examples. We have a similarly broad approach in the photographers we have included. Some have reached the status of “old masters” – are internationally famous and at the top of their profession, honored with multiple awards and solo museum exhibitions, their work muchcollected. Others are just beginning their While most are professionals, some are not. What all have in common though, is that there is something remarkable or arresting about their work, and they all are technically In short, we have tried to give a complete as possible a picture of the best of photography
This thought has dictated our approach. There is considerable discussion about what is and what is not photography. We decided to take the broadest possible interpretation, and not only include, but actively pursue, everything that could remotely be considered as photography. On the one hand, we have the work of purists who still work only with old-

Our purpose with International Masters of Photography is similar to that of our other series: to create an annual chronicle of what is happening in the art of photography all over the world, by featuring the work of noteworthy photographers, representing as many genres as possible. established photographers, but to do so would have been to miss much of the vital pulse of an art that is expanding and literally recreating itself before our eyes. Much of what is really new and exciting is coming from young, unknown photographers, members of a globalized and well connected world-wide community. Very much enabled by the internet and the rapid development of communication technologies, people from every corner of the global village, are not only gaining more access to information and new processes, but we all are enabled to share our discoveries and in a primarily visual manner. We, at WWAB, see this as a very exciting and positive development, and hope that our books provide one more tool to enhance this contemporary phenomenon. It has been our approach from our beginning as a publishing house to be as broad and inclusive as possible in our selection - while maintaining rigorous standards of quality. We believe that the element of magic in any anthology of art is its broadness and variety, and here we want it to include the whole world. And the world of photography is huge. In years to come, as we add volume after volume, we think that our depiction of it will become an ever more faithful cross-section of this beautiful and dynamic art.

MICHAEL LIVSHIN world around me, about myself, better understand the reality of the three dimensions and convert it into two-dimensional sub-reality, freezing time to stop the constant want to see deep inside someone’s eyes and see their pain, hopes and dreams, look for the light in the darkness around me, search for the uncommon in the common. I want to see people, what lies behind their eyes, where have they been, where they hope to go, because it helps me to understand myself. I am searching for the soul in the mundane, purpose in a seemingly indifferent and cruel world; to identify my place in it with all my talents. -Michael Livshin
At his core, Michael Livshin is an intellectual, philosopher, thinker and is an artist. Starting as a musician, and, upon completing advanced musical studies in Conservatory, he chose to venture toward creative photography driven by his passion in a perpetual purpose.
Michael studied under the tutelage of many masters such as Joe McNally, Monte Zucker, Dave Black, Vincent Versace and others. He is member of PPA, PPANJ, participated in selected exhibitions and has had work published in various American and international publications.

I spent a great deal of my career there working for the ad agencies that serviced these companies. I moved to London three years ago and am now based in the UK. My visual style has been described as illustrative, painterly and cinematic. It is a product of years the offbeat expression, unique beauty, or a face etched with years of living are a few of the qualities that make a great portrait to me. My goal is to create epic, dramatic imagery using carefully crafted lighting and color palettes combined with a sense of mystery, whimsy and humor. G. ELLIOTT SIMPSON G. Elliott Simpson was born in 1970. He has been an artist and graphic designer since 1993, and has art while recovering from a near-fatal injury and 7-week-long coma. He lives in Toronto, Canada with his husband Peter, and a long-haired tabby named Wagner. “It’s fair to say the injury and recovery motivated me to get on with making the work I’d always wanted to, made me appreciate the time left - so it’s at least partly to blame. While I admire the work of many photographers see around us is a lie in the process of being told, and that intrigues me - to paint people, dress them in a new costume or skin, to conceal them behind that polished commercial veneer (another lie we’re all now accustomed to) that can make the disturbing seem accessible, even fashionable. And when you cover something up in one place, something else gets revealed in another - I think my images are about people pretending to be, wishing they were, something other than what they are, which when you think about it seems truthful in and of itself, very everyday.” - G. “I was raised in a family of professional photographers. Trained as a psychologist, I found photography as a second full-time career. I constantly challenge myself to express myself in new and unconventional ways with my camera. My shooting style is highly intuitive and regardless of the tools used. I capture things with all sorts of gear, almost always with natural light and with some planned distance between intuition and technical perfection. I feel that creativity behind the lens lends itself to artistic expression. Like any other artistic medium the camera is the beginning of one’s art, - not the end. The camera is a tool that allows me to paint with light. I love interpreting life in this way; breaking traditional photography rules and capturing an image in the way I feel it should be.” -J. B.

About Parallel Series “There’s a mystery and power in holding something so ancient in the palm of your hand; to think that once this fossil belonged to a creature that lived thousands or millions of years ago, in a world so removed from ours. But even more powerful is the recognition that this prehistoric fragment resembles something so close to me, alive and present: The human form, a perfectly orchestrated symphony, with its grooves, curves and twists, converging and diverging lines, the bones, the muscles, the organs. And the ancient fossil falls in tune, playing the same symphony, yet on another frequency: A parallel frequency.”

“I have been painting for 13 years, and was originally taught by my father, Duncan Simmons who is a professional hyperrealist and watercolorist. I attended the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas for a short time, but did not busy with my three children. However, I continued painting, teaching myself various styles and techniques, where I have worked up to a respectable level, mostly on my own. Aside from painting, I have developed a love for photography (I-Phone photography,) which has become a passionate part of my everyday life. I have captured the most amazing, and what I call “divine images” in the sky, via my I-Phone, without using any type of Photoshop for enhancing what I capture... ...just contrasting and toning the colors which are already there, bringing to life what is unseen to the naked eye. It is a blessing, and a gift I have received, no doubt, and I am so thankful this form of art can say I have somewhat of a ‘romance with the heavens’ touch to every form of creation. My art is nothing but a story in the making.. ...a “Love Story”, which one day, will all come together.

“My approach to photography is quite simple. I believe that “photography” is the capturing of a moment in time. Because of this philosophy I do very little, if any, moments. With diminishing natural resources and human’s lack of compassion and understanding, these animals are disappearing at an alarming rate. My “job” is to record the lives of these animals, before they are all gone. I use Nikon D3 and D4 cameras and Nikkor 500mm or 600mm lenses. I observe animals’ behaviors and anticipate their actions and try to realistically capture the essence of the animal in his or her natural world.”

“K.REATURES is a series of movie-like still imagery telling a story of a human battle with dichotomy. The characters in these artworks represent purpose of “knowing thyself.” In the subconsciousness of bright personalities lie dark spots of edgy fantasies. Equally, dangerous characters have spiritual light concealed within their defensive shells. Forgiveness is the mysterious key element that enables us to acknowledge this everlasting duality, respect it, and enjoy congruent authentic living.”

Dawn I, Schermer, Holland, 2011 Color digital photograph “The region of Holland where I live is an old landscape with dunes, polders, dykes, canals, sluices, mills and dams. All these are elements in the ongoing struggle against water. From medieval times people have worked on this landscape to protect their houses, crops and cattle, and to keep their feet dry. By studying archives and old maps I look for the remnants of their work, many of them still functioning today. They make this landscape so interesting and I try to tell their story and to show their beauty in series of photos using the ever-changing Dutch light and atmosphere at various moments of the day and seasons.

Most of the time I work at the end of the day when twilight is setting in. The images are taken with a long exposure time. I work with a Canon G11 and Canon D60 and the last three years I sometimes turn camera, inherited from my father, a Leica M4-P, Holga and a pinhole Zero. Since last year I have also been fascinated by alternative processes like cyanotypes, the Vandyke process and gumprinting.”

I have worked as a professional photographer for the last 30 years. My work involves: landscapes with a graphic, almost abstract quality, largescale industrial elements within these landscapes, and studies of industrial structures. creating. Every moment of photographing is accompanied with a childish excitement as if it were the within it; to choose one moment in time, to commemorate it, to hold its beauty, to examine it and see what the eye missed in a glimpse: a speck of dust, a single light, movement of fabric, water. I love photographing everything: children, young and old people, landscapes, urban streets, architecture, the random and the staged, color and black & white. I photograph everything pretty to me at any moment. I see my photographs as describing beauty and optimism, both apparently are in the eyes of the beholder. - D.L.

J. Maton investigates the border between journalism and art, with special attention to minorities. Parallel to his personal work, he accepts commissions for portraits, special events, and journalism, mainly for publishing companies, media agencies, magazines, artists, and other associations. Beyond narration, J. Maton’s work favors an intimate approach guided by the poetry of the moment: the aquatic or plant worlds; landscapes or children in a Saïgon orphanage, backstage of a fashion show or the private moments of travelling people. Jacques Maton’s photography reveals to us the sensual and human dimension of the subjects he approaches.

Creativity is endless, each path is as wide open as the horizon gives. I like to tell a story in my images whether through nature, people or both. For me there is a refreshing comfort in drawing out unseen beauty or obscuring with mystery. Lighting came naturally to me. I explored highlights and shadows and shapes and textures and the dynamic interplay between them. Some notable highlights include: book publication of my work in the International most nominations in one category for the Spider Awards for best black and white photography; and a recent showing of my work in a New York City Gallery as well as the Museum of Fine Art in for more works of art to be published in the near future. - D.N.

Sossusvlei #24, Namibia 2012 Archival pigment print 28 x 40 in. or 71 x 102 cm “This work is part of a collection of landscape images from my recent trip to Namibia. Namibia is one of the least populated countries in the world, and in the southwest region is the Namib Desert. The desert dunes, some of the highest in the world, are evocative and dreamlike. Some 300 meters high, they are constantly changing, carved by the powerful winds that prevail. In the early 1900’s, diamonds were discovered, and towns like Kolmanskop sprung up, but the diamond rush is long gone and the desert is invading and reclaiming the ghost towns.

He is a self taught landscape photographer, driven by his desire to be out in nature and to try techniques over many years and personally found that he obtains the most pleasing results visually when photographing in the infrared black white medium. In his own words, “the sense of surreal lighting encapsulated by this medium exaggerates the drama, mood and theatre of light and atmospheric conditions interacting with the land, providing an enhanced emotional reaction to the image.”

My mind’s eye sees something, my emotions feel something, and then my camera, lighting and set see something. They often uncover something that I didn’t notice and the sum total will be a welcome photographic surprise that visually stimulate and satisfy me in ways that words cannot.” K.T.

Looking through glass is always surprising. Changing the camera angle changes change the way objects show or do not show. Inanimate objects in a window can seem to have personality, as photographs are inanimate and yet arouse feeling. These images sometimes layer and sometimes merge. They evoke our double life: who we are inside and what we become outside.”

He says photography provides an endless stream of possibilities. He believes the best art is born of natural partnerships. Whether its collaboration between artists or the relationship between artist and subject, these dynamic connections drive his creativity. Photographic shoots are experiments from which ideas are born: an organic process which is only ever partly within Guido’s conscious control. On shoots, his head functions as a motorized machine and his eyes as the machinist driving the process. This improvised approach constantly challenges to create less mainstream art. Initially trained as an architect, he has also studied painting and photography in London and New York. He works from his studio in Mexico City and collaborates with artists to merge ideas which far outstrip their individual concepts.
