WHO WE ARE

FOR UNISUL, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS NOT A STRATEGY, GOAL AND AIM; IT IS AN ESSENTIAL VALUE FROM MANAGEMENT TO EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES.

RECIPROCALNETWORK LEARNING AND PERMANENT

Prof. Ailton Nazareno Soares President of Fundação UNISUL1

Proudly we present the Social Accounting of UNISUL – 2011. Each page we share more than a legal and accounting demonstrative, a locus of production, evaluation and dissemination of knowledge, a result of multiple network of learning in different spaces of interaction, among employees, professors, students and the community where we act. For UNISUL, social responsibility is not a strategy, goal and aim; it is an essential value from management to educational practices. Therefore, by programs, projects and services available, we mark out to the Institutional Educational Project and established two dimensions towards the effective action socially responsible: first, internally through the integration of multiple knowledge and social practices that, by research and extension, print a meaning to the teach, to the formation process; and second, externally, once this academic practices are also social contexts consolidating an educational purpose towards beyond the walls of University. Nowadays, Tubarão, cradle of our Fundação Unisul and Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina2 , is a reference in health and education. In other part, the region of Palhoça added to its scenery a neighborhood that is a model of sustainable development and of social quality.

Furthermore, in the capital and other cities form Grande Florianópolis, UNISUL is present with great extension activities: we act in hospitals, participate of rescue and cultural enrichment and in other areas where professors, community and students contribute to the joint solution of urban and social problems. The actuation and mutual learning are potentiated beyond campi and presence University Unity, by Campus UnisulVirtual through contents, methodologies and different tools that provide excellence in our distance learning present in more than 90 Brazilian towns constituting, in this way, in the insertion of UNISUL in the world crescent tendency of Education in the Century 21st. UNISUL honors its title of Community University and we, as citizens, are witness of the enthusiasm of the communities that are partners in the process of development, promoting sustainable initiatives. The social Accounting 2011 expands even more the relation among universities and other social contexts in a dialogical and flexible process, interacting with we believe, what we do and how we evaluate ourselves, in order to contribute to the integral formation along the life becoming citizens committed to their region without forget: always there will something new to teach and learn.

LOCAL UNISUL Everything that is sustainable, works in a network. Life confirms this pattern. Ecosystems, living beings and the organisms that compound them are sustainable entities because they are network systems. A community University is like an ecosystemthat works connected to the life that inspire and maintain.

Community University A public institution, non-state, it was created by civil society and by local government. The University belongs to everybody and exceeds the classrooms, libraries or laboratories, that assume the sense of its own nature and goes beyond it, applying in the society the knowledge that produces. As a community university that integrates the Sistema ACAFE – Associação Catarinense de Fundações Educacionais , UNISUL is linked to an academic community with approximately 200 thousand students, about 10 thousand professors and more than 8 thousand employees in several cities of Santa Catarina. The concepts of Community University and ecosystem reflects the system thinking that features the UNISUL and strengthens itself in the new ways of connection with life, culture and the history of each region that is inserted.

10

Community University: a harmonious systemic network Founded on the banks of a river, UNISUL absorbed its great teaching: life in motion without stagnation. Change is permanent like the Philosophy teaches and the reality do it more accurately. Learning is permanent. This is the revolution of Permanent Education. It is not about an idea, concept, dream, speech or department: it is the essence of a new culture with presupposition is the research and the effect is the Innovation. It is a work in progress, evolution, infinite spiral that pass by the same point, but always a level above. It is not about provide assistance in Health, Rights, Sport and other areas, but about open spaces to people expand knowledge by permanent education with courses in short, medium and long duration. Care works favor the change of knowledge inside and outside of the classroom and they potentiate an inseparable link between Research, Teaching and Extension through the innovation that produces, allowing that students and citizens trace their own way to grow up in lifelong. It is what we will see ad it is proved by the activities described in this Social Accounting.

GLOBAL UNISUL

Approximation among peoples recognizes and approaches equally different knowledge.

With a strong local presence in the development of the communities, UNISUL also had formatted networks with national and foreign universities, as well as the participation in the new program of Federal Government, Ciência sem Fronteiras4 , which is an integrant. It acts in the process of global connection, approaching nations with the Programa de Língua Portuguesa e Cultura Brasileira para Estrangeiros5 and count in collaboration of International Studies Abroad – ISA, that recruits students from all over the world to the Program that works at Unidade Universitária Ilha Centro – Trajano6 .

A country identity starts by a language.

Communicate in another language means access the knowledge of a whole culture.

“ Portuguese is being easier to learn than English […]. Portuguese is like music. Nigeria has many thinks seemed to Brazil. Food, music is very similar like samba”. Olumuyuwa Olumide, Nigeria

“I liked all the experience very much. Researches and my classes here at UNISUL […] it was a fantastic experience for me. I’m happy to have learnt so much here in Brazil”. Alec Suni, The United States of America.

“I was attending an Economy class and got curious to know a little bit more about renewable resources which are being used here in Mercosul”. Sierra Foster, Chile. Science beyond borders. Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture for foreign. 6 University Unity in Florianópolis Downtown. 4 5
