HUBLI FAQs - Epidural Analgesia Q: When should I have my epidural? A: Most patients are able to receive an epidural once they are in adequate or active labor. Your care provider will help you determine the best time for you. Our anesthesiologist is available around the clock to provide this service. Q: How long does it take the epidural to work? A: Normally, it takes about 10 minutes for the epidural to take full effect. Q: Will the epidural last long enough? A: Yes. Epidural catheters are connected to a continuous infusion of medication that is stopped only after the baby is delivered. Q: Will any of these the medication affect my baby? A: Medications used for labor and delivery are safe and normally do not affect the baby. Our Anesthesiologist and nurse will closely monitor you and your baby throughout your labor and delivery. Q: Effect on caesarean section rate A: Numerous studies are done to establish the influence of epidural analgesia on progress of labour and method of delivery. These studies clearly indicate that epidural analgesia does not increase the risk of caesarean section. Q: What if I need a C-Section? A: If your baby needs to be delivered quickly due to an emergency situation, Caesarean section can be done through the same epidural. Q: Epidurals and long term backache. A:Back pain is common after child birth with almost 50% of women reporting it 6 months after delivery; however several recently conducted randomized controlled trials confirm that epidural analgesia is not associated with an increased incidence of backache after child birth.
