snowTRENDS: LOCAL SHOPS GEAR UP FOR WINTER DEALS By Spencer Timkey The Boardroom Snowboard Shop saw the momentum of Burton Step On carry into Year 2, selling out of inventory at a rapid pace. The snowboard industry’s continued experiments with blended cambers put brands like Lib Tech, Burton and Salomon all at the top of the list. Anon’s m4 goggle, with a magnetic lens change system and magnetic facemask integration, was a home run in its first season. Select product at The Boardroom is now on sale, and discounts will continue until the end of the season and at The Legion Sale! (March 16th & 17th) The City Garage embraced change, selling nearly all of the Head Razzle Dazzle and K2 heated ski boot. They continued their push with telemark skiing, selling and cultivating the “free the heel” movement. The City Garage is having a monster “inventory reduction sale” on winter product until they transition to their summertime goodies. You can find great equipment at great pricing at The Garage, plus at The Legion Sale! Mud, Sweat N’ Gears continued to be the go-to spot for high-end ski tuning at “The Speed Factory,” as well as re-energizing the ski and snowboard scene with their East Aurora location. Skiers were treated to A+ bootfitting all year long from Miguel Azcarate, and Kim Reading’s curation of brands like Turtle Fur and other softgoods kept visitors warm all season. Mud, Sweat N’ Gears will announce a dedicated sale in the coming weeks, and you can find more great product at The Legion Sale! Dekdebrun’s Apex Store, while working on appointment only, still hung around the scene by providing personalized shopping experiences. Apex, a snowboard boot that fits into a chassis to convert into a ski boot, is one of the industry’s most intriguing items. Greg and his crew are still by appointment only, but if you see an open sign next to the door, head up and see what they’ve got. They’re running a sale now until the end of the season.

THE CITY GARAGE: Ellicottville’s Year Round Store of Fun

dead so it doesn’t matter. (*Tele skiing is not dead, but that’s the running joke*). We also were pleasantly surprised at the Head Razzle Dazzle and K2’s heated boots. Two very hot sellers!” Cultivating and maintaining the ski vibe is no easy task. Thankfully, the Garage has a loyal legion of skiers/employees who keep the vibe going strong. Tom “Too Tall” Blasco, Adam “X” Sauerwein, Trey, and of course The Head Wrench — show owner Sean Lowes. Now at the tail end of the season, The Garage will begin its massive “inventory reduction sale” where you can find a plethora of good deals on skis, boots, poles, clothing and everything else skiing. They’ll also be at The Legion Sale, a ski and snowboard sale put on by Ellicottville’s shops (that’s happening March 16th & 17th). While the other shops in town close down for the summer, The City Garage transitions to summertime fun store. They’ve carved out a niche, offering a product line that’s unique but practical. “We went to the OR (Outdoor Research) last June at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver,” Clauss said. “There were some very cool things there. We saw the first ever insulated dog bowl from Yeti. And we’re excited to announce that we’re getting back into the paddleboard game.” Previously, The City Garage sold stand up paddleboards from BIC, but this year will order from the Red Paddle Company. Founded by John Hibbard just over a decade ago, the Red Paddle Company uses patented technology in their boards to make them stiffer (to mimic a traditional hardboard) and the Titan Pump, which gets SUPs inflated in half the time. “We’ll carry beginner, intermediate and advanced boards from them,” Clauss said. “But that’s not all! A full contingent of summertime clothing from Kuhl and Flylow (one of our great ski clothing brands), Birkenstock sandals, Eno Hammocks and of course Yeti coolers.”

If you’ve never checked out Yeti’s line, go to The City Garage this summer. There are massive Every good ski town has the shop that defines skiing. The City Garage, skier owned and operat- coolers, mid-size zippered coolers (perfect for the back of a golf cart), wine tumblers, insulated ed, prides itself on being that shop. Proprietors of fine ski and winter equipment, the Garage has coozies and lots more. You’ll also find Stanley Drinkwear (for the working man!) and GCI cultivated a dedicated, cult-like following that won’t shop anywhere else. Premier bootfitting, Outdoor chairs (the fire pit rocker). vast knowledge and hosting events like “Telestock” all play into the tagline of “We Are Skiers.” “We are Ellicottville’s year round ski shop! And your one-stop shop for everything fun. Come “Even through an up and down year weather-wise, we still prevailed,” said Trey Claus, The by and see us any time of the year.” For more information on The City Garage, head to www. City Garage’s Mr. Man. “We continue to push the telemark skiing thing, but telemark skiing is citygarageskishop.com, @thecitygarage on Instagram or just pop by and say hello to the crew. RIDE

Small But Mighty: Holiday Valley Snowboard Team Makes Noise

AMERI-CAN Local Artisans Antiques Apparel “ If Unique Is What You Seek “ 11 WASHINGTON STREET DOWNTOWN ELLICOTTVILLE

716-699-6690

By Spencer Timkey Holiday Valley’s Training Center has a rich history of developing strong, competitive ski and snowboard teams. While the ski team’s prominence is more well-known because of Olympic athletes like Jill Vogtli and Travis Mayer, the snowboard team continues to turn heads with wins across the region. While the team consists of only 10 riders, a driven coaching staff keeps the team progressing towards loftier goals. “There’s a lot of combined experience with the coaches,” said Curtis Boza. His first year as a coach, Boza and the other four coaches — James Wangelin, Katie Lynn, Derek Rocco and Julie Filipowicz — push the team to get better when they gather each weekend. They focus on three primary areas of riding: slopestyle (jump and rail lines); rails (for rail jams); and boardercross (racing against other riders in a course with turns and rollers). “James grew up with Katie in the program, so with that much experience both riding and coaching, they’ve got a really good pulse on what the kids should be doing,” Boza said. “When you have a group of boys and girls ranging from 13- to 17-years-old, you’ve got to be able to keep it fresh so they don’t get bored or burned out.” The team travels around the region competing in events, most of which are sponsored by USASA (United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association). While they typically head to both Pennsylvania and Ohio for events, tough snowfall on the East Coast has limited their competitive exposure. But a slopestyle event at nearby Peek’n Peak earlier this season saw four silver and two bronze medals — setting the stage for the rest of the winter. “The kids had a good showing early in the year, but maybe didn’t do as well as they wanted,” Boza said. “But it’s good to go to other resorts and ride different terrain. We took them to HoliMont a few weekends ago, and we saw some really great progression. Just them riding different features and different terrain allowed us to tweak some things.” From January 31-February 3, the team traveled Lake Placid to compete in the Empire State Games, an Olympic-style competition. The Games started at Syracuse University in 1978 and has become a regular on the competitive circuit. Holiday Valley’s snowboard team was well-represented this year on the podium, taking 3 golds and 4 silvers. Custer City native Cal Minich took 1st overall in the boardercross, while Grace Belton was chosen to begin the torch relay down Yodeler. All in all, a successful trip for the team. “Going to a mountain that’s bigger and different than Holiday Valley is good for them,” Boza said. “Especially when they come away with wins. It’s cool to see our little hill churning out athletes that can compete with kids who grew up riding more advanced terrain.” Every team member that’s participated in boardercross has qualified for Nationals, which take place at Copper Mountain (Colorado) at the end of March. While the team is still deciding who will go, the fact they made it is really cool. The success of the team this year will only help its growth. As more of the team wins, the more their peers will want to join in on the fun. If you’ve got a snowboarder in the family that’s interested in joining the team, Boza encourages you to contact the Training Center at Holiday Valley to get involved. “These kids are competing at a high level, and have a chance to compete on the national stage,” Boza said. “We’re going to continue to grow and help the kids progress.”

ELLICOTTVILLE

WINTER CARNIVAL / MARDI GRAS PARADE

A weekend unlike any all year! Mardi Gras / Winter Carnival in Ellicottville takes the fun of spring skiing and couples it with engaging activities - on and off the slopes. Mark the weekend of March 8-10 on your calendar, and get yourself to Ellicottville to participate! The fun starts Friday evening with the Mardi Gras Kickoff Party, a lively event hosted by Madigan’s, downtown Ellicottville, that crowns the King and Queen of Mardi Gras, chosen by crowd applause. You can bet Madigan’s will be transformed into an authentic Fat Tuesday celebration. Staff will dish up New Orleans style food, with music and a costume contest to boot! Tickets are available for $10 at the door. It all starts at 7pm. Head to Holiday Valley Saturday morning to kick off all the on-snow entertainment! Take the kids to get their faces painted at Customer Service before making your way to the Safety Patrol Cookout at the base of Yodeler. We know you’ll want to #thankasnowmaker, and you can do so at Yodeler’s Snowbar! The crew will start to pile up snow and shape it at the beginning of the month, and our beloved snowmakers will be ready and waiting to serve you a fresh cold one … nothing beats a Snowbar beer. Head into Yodeler from 4-8pm for live music! The 27th Annual Mardi Gras Parade marches down Ellicottville’s main drag at 6pm Saturday, with costumes, floats and plenty of festive flair. You can anticipate seeing Punxsutawney Phil, as well as this year’s Grand Marshall, the Chicken Wing King Drew Cerza, and many zany marching groups represented by local businesses. It’s going to be tough to beat some of the floats from last year, so get your creative juices flowing and start building - applications are available at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Waking up early Sunday morning will yield benefits, as you can fill up on a Holiday Valley pancake breakfast at the top of Champagne (courtesy of the Ski Patrol). At 11:45am, you’re invited to line up for the Costume Parade at the top of Edelweiss. The parade will traverse its way down Mardi Gras slope, and once again HV is awarding the best costume - the winner will get a free Seasons Classic pass for next season! Head back over to Yodeler Sunday afternoon, because you’re not going to want to miss potentially the funniest event at HV all year - the Dummy Downhill. It’s simple: build a dummy, put it on skis, point it down Yodeler and watch it fly. Registration for the Dummy Downhill is $5; find the sign-up sheet, as well as a complete schedule of the weekend’s events, at www.holidayvalley.com.

HOLIDAY VALLEY’S SPRING POND SKIMMING PARTY You’ve seen crashes, costumes and characters. Pond Skimming at Holiday Valley is a must-do at least once in your life! Lower Yodeler sets the stage on Saturday, March 23 … start a little bit up Yodeler slope and get your speed - you’ll need it - before keeping those #tipsup and ripping across an icy patch of water. Pond Skimming side effects may include, but are not limited to: side pain (from laughing); regular pain (from hitting the water); mood swings (watching the success and failure) and trouble hearing (from the crowd). Registration starts at 11am, and both skiers and snowboarders are welcome to participate. Minimum age is 8, and anyone under 18 will need a parent signature. The Pond Skimming action will kickoff at 1pm. Last year, we saw gorillas, super heroes, 70s disco stars, presidential candidates ... (I am certain we will see those again), lots of splashes and lots of crashes! Categories: Best Skimmer, Best Costume, Best Kid and Best Splash. Enjoy this annual favorite with food, drinks from the mini Snowbar and great company. When the day is done, you can cross this one off your bucket list! Details at www.holidayvalley.com.

Packed with flavor, the pan seared cod is a very tasty, light and flaky white fish. It is served over “ragout” also known as succotash. You can make ragout with any vegetables and beans. To stew your beans and veggies, use a hot pan and work the vegetables until soft; add fresh garlic and Italian seasonings and deglaze with your favorite white wine. One of our guest favorites is the Hazlitt Riesling which compliments the cod. The ragout is great with any protein including chicken, beef, and seafood. You can modify too; add some cumin and chili powder for more “Mexican”ragout or curry for a “Middle Eastern” ragout. Endless Possibilities!

DINNER FOR TWO

BLUEBERRY MAPLE PANCAKE BEER

Plan that special date night at The Silver Fox. Make your reservation to dine on our 26-ounce dry-aged bone-in rib-eye dinner for two! We serve this delicious steak with two glasses of house wine, two house salads, chef mashed potatoes and the night’s chosen vegetable. All for the price of $110.00. And don’t forget to stop in Friday from 5-7pm for The Fox’s Martini Club. Complimentary appetizers; sign your name in the club book to be entered into a monthly gift card drawing.

The all new Blueberry Maple Pancake just tapped! The Brewery has teamed up with Sprague’s Maple Farm to create this beer, which immediately became a huge sensation. The beer on its own tastes just like a blueberry pancake. It’s made like a pastry beer with different bases and malts to add the pancake flavor. Only about 100 barrels were produced but it’s so popular, more batches have to be made. The next batch, however, will be made a little differently - water will be pulled from tree sap from Sprague’s Reverse Osmosis System. Try taking this beer a step further and actually make pancakes with it!

By Mary Heyl For 48 years, the Greater Olean Home Show has been helping homeowners – and prospective homeowners – prepare for spring projects, big and small, all under one roof. From April 12 – 14, the William O. Smith Recreation Center will transform from an ice rink into one of the largest home improvement vendor shows in the area. No matter how big or small one's project is, the Greater Olean Home Show is an excellent resource for finding the service providers, materials, ideas and inspiration to get started. Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce COO Meme K. Yanetsko stated, “At least 80 of the area’s leading businesses are expected to exhibit their wares and services at the upcoming show. The Home Show is a unique marketplace to shop, compare and save on a total selection of home-related products and services for building, remodeling, gardening and decorating.” However, the home show is more than just vendors! There are live demonstrations throughout the weekend where attendees can learn how to take home improvement into their own hands. Yanetsko said this year's demonstrations will include DIY home improvement tips, gardening techniques, floral arranging and more. Attendees can look forward to a variety of area business that specialize in home upgrades, including bathroom remodeling, contracting services, garage doors and openers, home décor, water treatment, window installation, and more. Past vendors include Dr. Green Lawn/ Custom Turf of Salamanca, Cutco Ka-Bar of Olean, NY and Culligan Water of Bradford, PA, as well as Owl Homes Group of Allegany and ERA Team VP Realty for those looking to build or buy a home. While certainly a luxurious way to spend an evening, for many soaking in a hot tub is also an important component of health and wellness. Many Pool Mart customers have noted over the years how even a short time in their hot tub can ease aches and pains, help them sleep longer and improve circulation, all year 'round. Pool Mart of Olean has been part of the home show for a number of years, and manager Scott Bray is looking forward to showing home-show attendees how to transform their outdoor space into their own personal oasis.

Getting you through the day with

Olean’s #1 Country and Hit Music Stations! Tune in every Friday 10-11a for Half Off Friday when you can save 50% on items

Popular options include hot tubs, which can range in size from two people up to six or more, with many premium options. Whether one would like an in-ground or aboveground pool, Pool Mart makes the selection process easy, and also offers ideas for outdoor living, including patio sets, outdoor kitchens and all the supplies needed to keep that pool or hot tub running smoothly for many years. Twin Tiers Contracting of Buffalo is another mainstay vendor of the home show, and has an excellent reputation for serving Olean, Ellicottville and all of the Southern Tier. Owner Troy Clark has many years of experience with projects big and small including home remodels, additions, roofing, flooring, siding, decks and more. Troy is pleased to offer free estimates and competitive pricing, and always has an eye on the latest trends. Open shelving, incorporating woodwork, different metals and contrasting materials are some of the new trends making their way into kitchen remodels this year. Experienced in custom wood-working, Troy and his company can help homeowners customize their kitchen with these trending ideas. Some of his latest projects include custom bar tops for restaurants and home kitchens. Troy and his team can help his customers incorporate the popular rustic or reclaimed look by adding barn wood accent walls and incorporating other mixed materials for a custom look. Spring is also a great time to evaluate one's roof and address any damage created by the long winter. For asphalt roofs, Twin Tiers Contracting can add ice and water underlayments, new drip edges and zinc strips to give new life – and a new look – to the most important part of a home. Yanetsko encourages area business owners to get involved in this well-attended annual event: “Business owners can reach many customers in the three day event, and their customers can see, touch, compare and buy your product. Vendor booths are now available for the annual home show, held at the William O. Smith Recreation Center in Olean.” Vendor applications are available online at http://www.oleanny.com/Events/Home-Show.aspx.

The home show, located at 551 E. State St. in Olean, will be open during the following hours: Friday April 12 from 5 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, April 14 from 10 a.m. To 4 p.m. For more information about the Greater Olean Home Show, call the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce at (716)372-4433 or email member@oleanny.com.

“ LISTEN TO THE MUSIC” THE DOOBIE BROTHERS ARE STILL ROCKIN’ DOWN THE HIGHWAY

A Conversation with Patrick Simmons HULICK: How long has this current band been together? SIMMONS: Well Tommy Johnston and I have been together since 1969. John McFee joined in 1978. Then the members range from the early ‘90’s down to about five years ago. HULICK: A lot of the members have played with other bands throughout the years, so you have many musical influences when you record and tour. SIMMONS: Yes. Pretty much everyone has played with other bands from time to time with Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Huey Lewis, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, James Taylor, Kenny Loggins and even some salsa bands. Tommy and I are really the only two that are Doobie Brothers forever. (laughs) HULICK: How did your shows in November 2018 go where you performed two full albums? SIMMONS: Really good. Funny you mention that… I just saw the rough cut of the film we did in conjunction with those shows last night and I think it works. This was different because we never played some of those songs to a live audience, so that was pretty cool. It allowed us to do some of the songs that we originally recorded in sort of a rush because we had to get the album out. Now we are pretty seasoned as a band and we were able to have that show through. In the music industry we call that polishing turds… (laughs). We had a lot of turds to polish. (laughs)

...................... SATURDAY, APRIL 13 @ 7:00pm SENECA ALLEGANY EVENTS CENTER SALAMANCA, NEW YORK By Melanie Hulick You know their songs, you recognize the music that has been around for over four decades with the heavy guitar laden sound, and once again the Doobie Brothers will be making a stop in WNY when they play Seneca Allegany Casino on Saturday, April 13th. With 4 Grammy’s, an induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, over 48 million records sold, multi platinum and gold albums, this band has become as iconic as their hit songs… “China Grove”, “Takin’ It to the Streets”, “What a Fool Believes”, “Long Train Runnin’” and “Listen to the Music” to name a few. I had the immense pleasure to talk with one of the original & founding members, Patrick Simmons, recently about the band and its history, their unique album that brought some of country music’s giants together to put a new twist on some of their most well known hits and playing a couple of shows recently that Simmons says they have always wanted to try… doing 2 full albums. “I think the reason we are still going and gaining new fans all the time is due to YouTube and social media”, said the Simmons. “People are always looking for something new and there we are. We’ve been lucky not to be pigeon holed into a certain genre, which lends itself to be heard in many different music categories”, he added. As far as any new projects Simmons said, “We are doing some recording right now… not sure what it will turn into, but it’s sounding pretty good and we’re looking forward to having some new music out there in the spring.”

HULICK: (laughs) Well that’s the first time I’ve heard that expression. SIMMONS: (laughs) The other part is that we had a lot of fun doing this and I think that’s the most important part. Other bands have done full album shows, but these shows were our first go round and we wanted that challenge of can we do this… can we resurrect these tunes and play them with conviction, and I think we did that. HULICK: I think in the context of your music your songs are not something you would look silly doing decades later, so your music lends itself to be able to doing full albums. For your super fans it’s something fun to hear and see you do songs on your albums that you haven’t done live before that they have known and have listened to for many years. SIMMONS: That’s exactly right. HULICK: Your album, “Southbound”, was another first for the band, which had you recording some of your iconic hits with some heavy hitters in country music like Blake Shelton, Zac Brown Band, Toby Keith and Brad Paisely. That offered your fans a new twist of your music. SIMMONS: Yes. The songs pretty much stayed in our lane, but we added in some steel guitar, bottle neck, banjo, mandolin… other instrumentation that we don’t do. So that was a lot of fun. HULICK: A word that is synonymous with the band is “relevant”. Who do you consider in today’s music scene that would be considered relevant a decade and beyond with their music? SIMMONS: Oh… I love Train and consider them to be in that category… Adele will be relevant forever… obviously Hip Hop artists will still be out there… Snoop Dogg will always be Snoop Dogg probably forever (laughs)… he’s one of those iconic guys. HULICK: What is your favorite song to do live? SIMMONS: Oh, gee… I like playing “Long Train Runnin’”. That’s one of my favorites. I dig the groove and it’s just fun to play. “Black Water” is still a fun song for us. “Listen To The Music” I still love to play because it’s one of those happy audience participation songs. HULICK: Do you have a message to your fans who will be coming to your show? SIMMONS: Rock out! We’re looking forward to being there doing our thing!

..............................................................

Tickets to The Doobie Brothers’ performance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $45 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on the band, visit thedoobiebrothers.com.

SPRINGTIME HIKING IN THE FOREST

The sights and sounds of spring in the Forest are uplifting. Experience the beauty of the Forest as the first green leaves appear and listen for the sweet notes of returning songbirds as you hike along one of the many trails within the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). A few suggested trails to explore this spring are the Marilla Bridges Trail and the Kinzua Valley Trail. Marilla Bridges Trail is a simple 1-mile loop around the Marilla Reservoir along Rt. 346, 5 miles west of Bradford. The Kinzua Valley Trail is a 7-mile linear trail which links the community of Westline to the Red Bridge Recreational Area in the ANF. This trail is well marked and suitable for both biking and hiking. Accommodations are available at the Westline Inn at one trail head, and at Red Bridge which includes camping, RV and cabins at the other trailhead. The Knox & Kane Rail Trail is a new 3.8-mile linear trail. It features a crushed limestone surface with trailhead parking at the Kinzua Bridge State Park, 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, and behind the Mt. Jewett Borough office building, at the intersection of Center Street and Peterson Street. For birding and to catch those first songs of spring, explore Timberdoodle Flats. This trail is named for the American woodcock, also known as the timberdoodle, a bird species that likes both open areas and forest woodlands for mating and nesting. Interpretive signage is located along the trail. There are two trail loops within this system: the Woodcock Loop is 1¼-miles in length with 12 interpretive signs. The shorter, Bluebird Trail loop is a ½-mile trail suitable for family hikes with young children. The map on page 21 highlights in red other trails featured in the ANF. For descriptions of all the trails within the area please go to www.visitANF. com/trail.central. To plan your next getaway, call the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau at 800-473-9370 for a free 2019 Travel Guide & Map or go to www.visitANF.com.

Don Felder, former lead guitarist of the Eagles, to headline this year's concert ELLICOTTVILLE, NY — The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce is proud to present Don Felder on Saturday evening of the 2019 Summer Music Festival (July 5-7th.) A former lead guitarist of the Eagles, fourtime Grammy® Award-winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, The New York Times best-selling author, amazing guitarist, and captivating performer is the best way to describe Don Felder today. The Eagles bands record-setting compilation Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) sold over 29 million copies in the U.S. alone and was awarded by the RIAA the topselling album of the 20th Century. Currently Don and the Eagles have sold more than 83.5 million albums. A member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998, Felder served as a member of The Eagles for 27 years, putting his mark on numerous Eagles milestones. Felder originated the music and co-wrote The Eagles biggest hit – the iconic, Grammy-studded smash “Hotel California” – along with fan favorites like “Victim of Love” and “Those Shoes”. He became immediately celebrated for his lyrical, signature guitar work on legendary songs like “Hotel California,” “One of These Nights,” “New Kid In Town,” and numerous more. “Hotel California” was recently voted the Number 1 best 12 string guitar song in the world by Guitar World magazine. “Since the Chamber introduced the first Summer Music Festival rock act in 1999 featuring the Rascals, we have been able to provide our locals and out of town guests alike with twenty years of first class entertainment at a reasonable price,” stated Brian McFadden, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce. “Thanks to the generosity of our presenting sponsor, Holiday Valley Resort and Conference Center, picnic baskets and chairs will still be allowed and children 12 and under are free thanks to our Cosponsor M&T Bank. Add the Buffalo Philharmonic on Sunday night, with fireworks, this is truly a weekend of music on the slopes of Holiday Valley like no other.
