AMERI-CAN YES WE CAN! featuring STORE-IN-STORE
By Spencer Timkey Look around your house. How many of the products you use daily were made in the United States? One? Two? Ten? The reality is that a majority of the things we take for granted - TVs, iPhones, automobiles - are not made here. It’s a shame that we’ve come to that.
Something For Everyone
Local Artisans, Painters, Potters & Woodcraft, Antiques & Accents for the Home, Quilting, Apparel, Accessories & Jewelry for Guys & Gals
DOWNTOWN ELLICOTTVILLE, NY
Between autonomous assembly lines and cheaper costs overseas, it’s not breaking news to say that American manufacturing jobs have rapidly declined. It seems as if almost daily, our current political climate touches on the subject of how we can rekindle the magic of the post-World War II superpower industrial boom.
Not down for the count, Andol opened his first - and flagship - “Made in America” store in 2010, adopting the motto “For Country, For Soldier, for American Worker, and for our Children’s Future.” Selling only things that are made in the States, Andol has grown the business into something we can all get behind. If it’s made in America, you can probably find it at the Elma, NY location. As of 2016, Andol and his crew have welcomed over 500 tour buses, with 600 already locked in for this summer.
Located on the golf course of Holiday Valley inside the new Tamarack Club
for a s u join and e t bi a brew
Instead of attempting to open additional Made in America stores across the region/country, Andol decided to go the route of “store-in-store” - a concept that works for all parties involved. Retail spots, tourist destinations and similar motivations are the ideal places for the store-in-store concept, because it allows them to complement their current inventory with American-made products and the brand name Andol has cultivated.
AFTER A ROUND
ON THE GOLF COURSE KEEP ON GOING WITH
There are two Made In America stores in our immediate vicinity that you can shop at (and support!) Most recently opened is the one at the Eldred WWII Museum, 201 Main Street, Eldred, PA. If you recall, The Summer Local did a feature on the museum a couple of summers ago, and it definitely needs to be on your list if you haven’t been there yet. Military themed items like hats, t-shirts and patches can be found at the Museum for purchase. The other is right in the village of Ellicottville at Liz Boberg’s Ameri-Can shop, which has an awesome variety of things made in America and Canada (hence, Ameri-Can). Less than a year after Boberg opened her store, the Made in America store-in-store was presented to her, and obviously a perfect fit. Look for the signage on the windows! You have the opportunity to support American manufacturing and the mission that Andol - and the rest of his Made in America partner stores - has set out on. Think of it less as scoring great stuff, and more about helping your fellow American. Learn more about Andol’s Made In America store at www.madeinamericastore.com. For the store-in-store locations listed above, see the map on page 16. Other store-in-store locations and information on how to become a store-in-store client can be found on the Made In America website.

Indoor, Patio, Or Poolside Dining
Although we might not ever return to that point of mass production, you can still support the cause. Across Western New York, pop-up shops are emerging to push consumers into buying products made on American soil. Enter the Made in America store. In 2010, Mark Andol was the epitome of the American Dream. Owning and operating his own business - General Welding and Fabricating - and employing over 60 people, he expanded it to three other locations. But cheaper competition overseas and the loss of two key accounts ultimately forced Mark to close the doors.

Golfing In a Ski Town Black Diamonds aren’t just a winter thing
Holiday Valley Resort is getting into the swing of the upcoming season as they say goodbye to white and hello to green
Senior Golf Special
Offered to all senior citizens every Monday and Tuesday morning: $34.95 includes golf, cart and lunch
By Dash Hegeman As the chill of winter morphs into the revival of spring, it’s time to start thinking about warmer days, nine irons, and countless lost golf balls. And with that in mind, The Double Black Diamond Golf Course at Holiday Valley is ramping up for another summer of fun on and off the green. So call up your friends, make your plans in advance, and get ready for one of Western New York’s most unique courses. Don’t believe us? Go check out the summer section of www.holidayvalley.com and watch the video overview to see the combination of technique and power that are needed to play this course. If you need further proof, there’s no better person to get the Holiday Valley golfing scoop from than Steve Carney, the Director of Golf and Summer Operations for Holiday Valley. Carney and his talented crew are preparing to embark on the formidable task of taking a significant amount of land that has been covered by snow all winter and getting it primed for a summer of golfing activities. “The dry conditions last spring caused our fairway conditions to be mediocre,” Carney stated. “We will give lots of attention to get the fairways in good condition. The greens continue to be very good. And 6 to 8 bunkers will be rebuilt.” But first comes snow removal. According to Carney there can be anywhere from two to four feet of compacted snow that he and his team need to get off the course. The combination of the water and weight takes a significant toll on the ground below it and every season, Carney and his team must work hard and fast to get the greens in top form for the summer. When asked about his team of PGA golf professionals, Carney replied, “I’m glad Tom Dirito and Kyle Benish are returning for their 13th years with us. That makes it 100% easier.” The Holiday Valley Mountain Shop will close this year on April 2, at which point winter merchandise will be taken out, the shop will be painted and the carpets will be cleaned. By April 7 they will have the summer goods all moved into the store and on display. Carney estimates about 450 boxes will be opened, tagged, and put on the shelves this year. Not bad for a less than one week turnaround. And that is just what takes place in the Mountain Shop. The rest of the behind-the-scenes
Golf outings at Holiday Valley Resort are fun and easy to plan! Packages can accommodate 20-144 people with golf, cart, dinner and tournament assistance for just $66 per person Mondays and Tuesdays. Let their staff help plan your next event!
work is just as, if not more, intense. “We just don’t open the door for any season without a tremendous amount of planning,” said Carney. “Last fall we saw about three dozen golf companies for the coming year. Lots of meetings for pricing, marketing, golf course improvement planning, course equipment, budgeting, golf school, lesson programs, league organizations, events, golf shows, employee hiring, merchandising, etc.” At the end of the day though, it’s all about the love of the game for Carney, just like it is for any avid golfer. “My favorite day of the year is always April 1 because myself and thousands of others in Western New York are chomping at the bit to get the golf season started. We’ve been caged up for five or six months and we can finally get out and start hitting the great white ball that is forever testing us. We love it and at times hate it, but we can’t wait! Have a great 2017, wherever you are golfing!”
FEED MORE THAN JUST YOUR DESIRE TO GOLF
After a day out on the fairways, you’re sure to work up an appetite. Lucky for you, the dining options are plentiful at Holiday Valley. Between the fantastic full service menu at John Harvard’s Brew House, the beach themed Cabana Bar, McCarty’s Cafe, the Sky High Cafe, and the beer and snack wielding Golf Cart, there is always something at Holiday Valley to satisfy both your hunger and your thirst. Looking for relaxation? Book a massage, mani/pedi, or facial at the Ellicottville Oasis Spa, located inside the Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley. Spa packages give you the option to add on access to the Tamarack’s indoor/outdoor pool, hot tub and fitness room, making your visit to Holiday Valley Resort ever so rewarding, even if your golf swing says otherwise. With so much green waiting for you at Holiday Valley this summer, you’d better start planning a visit or two. And if you’re looking to improve your golf game, Holiday Valley has a trio of qualified and enthusiastic instructors on staff. Steve Carney is a PGA Master Professional and the 2015 Western New York PGA Professional of the Year. Kyle Benish is a PGA Class A member and the 2014 Western New York PGA Assistant Professional of the Year. And Tom Dirito is a member of the United States Golf Teachers Federation. They also offer video lessons, which have been gaining an immense amount of popularity over the past few years. For more information, call 716-699-2345.

Ellicottville: Unlimited FUN!
FORE! GOLF NY / PA ~ 2017 ANNUAL GOLF & TRAVEL EDITION ... Page 07
From Treetop Adventures to Slopeside Concerts to Paddling the Waters ... There’s plenty of excitement to keep you entertained before and after your round on the golf course By Spencer Timkey When the ski lifts stop spinning and town quiets down, people are less apt to think of Ellicottville as a summertime vacation destination. But a burgeoning summer business has seen the town thrive all through the warmer months, and a surplus of fun things to do will, without a doubt, keep the entire family entertained.
HOLIDAY VALLEY: MORE THAN JUST GOLF
If you’ve been to Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park, then you’re already aware of how impressive (and fun) it is; if you haven’t been, then get on it this summer! Defining Sky High isn’t easy, as it provides an abundance of different outdoor activities that require you to strategize, maybe sweat a little, and even overcome some of those lingering fears that have haunted you since childhood. The aerial park isn’t just a ropes course with zip lines - it’s a mutant hybrid of part Indiana Jones, part Ewok Village. The onset of the park’s opening revealed trails of varying difficulty, and each year, the resort has added new ways to climb amongst the trees. As a self-guided adventure, you go at your own pace, with staff (in bright orange shirts) keeping an eye on you from the ground. The yellow courses, which are perfect for the little ones ages 7 and up, keep you around 10-15 feet off the ground, while the Commando course (writer’s note: it is NOT easy) puts you near the very top of the canopy. Black Storm, a local favorite, zips you across the Punch Bowl ski slope, where you’ll be challenged with some mildly difficult features before zipping back across. While you’re over there, give a wave to the people on the way up the Mountain Coaster! After you complete the zip line course back to the bottom (you fly above people walking up to the park - so cool!), take a breather before hitting the 3-D Climbing Forest. One of only a few of these parks in the entire country, the Climbing Forest uses the same handholds you’d find on a rock climbing wall, just attached to the trees. An attendant hooks you up to a self-belay, you climb up the tree, ring the bell and float gently back down to the ground.
Experience adventure in the sky: holidayvalley.com/skyhigh
Wait … there’s more! Hand your harness over to one of the Sky High employees before heading up to the Mountain Coaster. Much like a roller coaster at an amusement park, get onboard a coaster car (ride single or duo) and take a relaxing ride up the hill. The way down is even more fun, as you loop and twist for an exhilarating ride back to the bottom. Had enough? We didn’t think so. After you’ve experienced a morning at the Adventure Park, grab some food at Tannenbaum Lodge, then burn off all those calories with a hike up to Spruce Lake. There are tons of ways to see the resort in the summer light … NEW THIS SUMMER are stand-up paddleboard rentals at Spruce Lake, organized by Adventure Bound onthefly. If you’ve never kayaked or paddled, this is a great way to get your feet wet. (Writer’s note: I would win every awful pun contest!) The crew at Adventure Bound will have everything your group needs for an enjoyable time out on the water. What a great idea for reunions, birthday parties, business outings, or just because! For more information on rentals and bookings, stop by Adventure Bound at 16 Washington Street or head to www.adventureboundonthefly.com. For those two-wheeled enthusiasts, a team of volunteers has been helping clear the mountain biking trails over the past couple of summers, and you can find riding opportunities that are mellow or aggressive - depending on your skill set and ambition. Whether you choose to peddle up the entirety of Holiday Valley Road to access the trails or prefer to drive up and park, there are plenty of ways to get your heart pumping. The trail system here is frequented by mountain bike enthusiasts from all over, and there are plenty of apps you can fire up to keep track of where you’ve been. Looking to put your skills to the test? Search Holiday Valley’s website (www.holidayvalley.com) and heartrateup.com for a list of races that take place at the resort each summer. And if you’re ever in need of bike maintenance repair or are just looking to do some bike-related shopping - equipment or apparel - head downtown to Bike & Bean, located on the main drag. Owner/rider Dennis Baldwin can fix you up (he offers knowledgeable bike service and delicious burritos) and send you off for a stellar day on the trails.
Kayak & SUP rentals coming to Spruce Lake this summer!
Trail maps available at Bike & Bean
Speaking of aggressive workouts, don’t forget about the Mudslide at Holiday Valley June 17, where individuals and teams run an invigorating route around the resort and maneuver through obstacles of varying difficulty before sliding down a big mudslide to cross the finish line. Disclaimer: you will get dirty. Full details at holidayvalley.com/mudslide.
ELLICOTTVILLE FESTIVALS: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Our local Chamber of Commerce has done a fantastic job of bringing a plethora of unique events to town over the course of the spring, summer and fall. There is something to be said about being able to walk into town from the resort without eight layers of clothing on. Temps can get hot in the summer, as can the line-up of festivals and outdoor entertainment!
Order tickets / view the full schedule at ellicottvilleny.com
The annual Summer Music Festival will consume the downtown area and Holiday Valley Resort over the 4th of July weekend. It all kicks off Friday, June 30 when the Chamber and local businesses introduce “Stroll the Streets,” giving visitors the chance to soak in many fun (and free!) activities up and down the village sidewalks. Friday night also plays host to Mardi Gras chairlift rides and drinks/appetizers at Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge to get yourself prepped for the concert weekend. This year’s live music line-up includes the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday, performing tunes from some of our favorite pirates and princesses. Naturally, you’ll want to stay for the fireworks, which will be choreographed to recognizable patriotic tunes such as Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. On Sunday, July 2, return to the slopeisde concert venue for Summer Music Fest’s headliner, Grand Funk Railroad with opening act Carl Dixon. Tickets for these concerts are on sale now! Head to www.ellicottvilleny.com for ticket info and to learn about Summer Fest’s FREE downtown events, including the arts & crafts show, music at the gazebo, and everyone’s favorite, the pet parade. Need more reasons to come to Ellicottville during the green season? The Happy Half Marathon, 5K & Beer Mile is May 13, Girl Friend Experience Weekend (NEW!) June 3-4, Jazz & Blues Weekend July 28-30, Taste of Ellicottville Aug. 12-13, Rock N’ Roll Weekend Sept. 15-17 … and many other events peppered in between. There’s no doubt that Ellicottville in the summertime is the area’s best kept secret (until now, cat’s out of the bag!) so trade your winter sweaters in for shorts and sunscreen, and get down here!

The Enchanted Mountains “Little Darling, it’s been a long, cold, lonely winter” ... but “Here comes the Sun”
Cattaraugus County, the Enchanted Mountains region, is home to many golf courses that will certainly help you tee off springtime to premium golfing at affordable prices - and with beautiful views while you aim for the fairways. Between tee times however, there is so much to do and see off the green! The beginning of May marks the opening of the best of our parks including Rock City Park, Griffis Sculpture Park, Onoville Marina, and Sky High Adventure Park. How does a scenic rafting trip down the famous Cattaraugus Creek sound? Or exploring huge rocks, or touring Old Order Amish Country, or seeing larger-than-life sculptures? It’s all here waiting for you, so … Where Do You Want to Play?
ONOVILLE MARINA 546 W. BANK PERIMETER ROAD, FREWSBURG, NY 14738 | 716-354-2021 | onovillemarina.org Onoville Marina in South Valley offers pristine waters for boaters (both engine and paddle). This Marina gives you access to the Allegheny Reservoir and 91 miles of natural shoreline with secluded bays and no commercialization. Affordable prices whether you are launching for the day, applying for dock space or fueling up, there are also many restaurants and stores nearby. Ospreys and bald eagles are frequent flyers above the waters and the surrounding hills of forest.
ALLEGANY STATE PARK 2373 ASP ROUTE 1, SALAMANCA, NY 14779 | 716-354-9121 | facebook.com/allegany Allegany State Park … there’s no better place to see the birds soar, watch the leaves grow and picnic outdoors! One of the joys of summer vacationing is camping. Gather ‘round the campfire to hear the noises of the night while you “unplug” with your family. This park has much to boast about being the “Largest NY State Park” and offering a 24-mile trail system for mountain biking, two lakes, many more miles for hiking (including the North Country Trail), and just about any other outdoor activity you can think of. Packed full of events all year long, you can start with the Annual Geobash May 19-21, celebrating its 12th year! Keep your calendar clear for the Nature Pilgrimage (June 2-3), Raccoon Rally Cycling Festival Weekend (June 17-18), Rock the Park (July 21), Family Beach Party (August 18) and any of their Adventure Runs.
ROCK CITY PARK 505 ROUTE 16 SOUTH, OLEAN, NY 14760 | 1-866-404-7625 | rockcitypark.com Explore massive outcropping of quartz conglomerate at Rock City Park. Climb around, on top of, and even under rocks that are sometimes 2 stories tall! Whether you are going for a short visit or a full day, this park destination will surely lead you on a different adventure each time you visit. There is a semi-paved trail about 1 mile long that is perfect for the whole family. But feel free to venture out from this trail, exploring whatever ground your hiking boots lead you to. A picnic area, bathrooms, outdoor art, and a gift shop filled with interesting items and must-have souvenirs - including many gems, minerals and fossils - round out the park’s amenities. Rock City Park hosts two annual events each season: a Mother’s Day weekend Arts and Crafts Show, and a Columbus Day Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show. Look them up on the web, then plan your trip to Rock City Park!
GRIFFIS SCULPTURE PARK 6902 MILL VALLEY ROAD, EAST OTTO, NY 14729 | 716-667-2808 | griffispark.org Griffis Sculpture Park is the perfect place to go for warm weather fun! Start out at the Mill Valley Road property where you are immediately greeted by a metal insect almost as big as your car! Make your way by foot to the trail through the woods, where sculptures accent the walkway. You will then come to an opening where a field full of sculptures awaits. Climb on, meander around, hang from, crawl in, lay across, sit next to or just stare in awe at the larger-than-life sculptures scattered throughout the park. Relax with the Ladies of the Lake and follow the trails through the upper woods for even more discoveries. Ready for round two? Take a short drive to the Rohr Hill Road site where towering sculptures walk the fields. Visit with the giant Kings and Queens or search the edge of the fields for more large animals. Spend an hour, or a full day. We’re certain you will be planning a return trip in autumn for “Night Lights at Griffis Sculpture Park” - when the sculptures and landscapes of the park are illuminated with colorful and theatrical lighting.

Warmer days and longer nights are sure signs of spring’s arrival, and the historic village of Randolph comes alive to celebrate this long-awaited season! Randolph’s Cardinal Hills Golf Course is a hub of activity - from league nights to tournaments - and the downtown business district has lots of fun in store for visitors, especially during their 45th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival. There’s something for the whole family to enjoy in Randolph, and no better time than now to visit!
Just down the hill from the golf course, Randolph’s historic Main Street has a variety of shops and restaurants that visitors are sure to enjoy. After a full day on the fairways, a refreshing, cold ice cream cone is the perfect treat! At Peaches ‘n Cream (19 Main Street), you can find a delicious selection of fresh produce, dozens of flavors of Hershey’s Ice Cream, and beautiful potted plants and flowers.
NEW AND EXCITING AT CARDINAL HILLS
Treat yourself to a massage or new style at Senn-Sations Salon and Day Spa in one of Randolph’s most beautiful Greek Revival historic buildings (150 Main Street). Enjoy one of the spa’s new services like an aromatherapy massage or a sea salt foot scrub.
Randolph is home to one of the most popular golf courses in the area, Cardinal Hills Golf Course. Founded in 1927, this 18-hole course is a microcosm of all that is admired about Cattaraugus County’s landscape: gently rolling hills, scenic views of the mountains, and the kind of quiet that people drive for miles to find. Located at 78 Conewango Road, Cardinal Hills is a par-72 course that provides a relaxing but challenging experience for golfers of all levels. Cardinal Hills offers activities for every member of the family. Leagues for men, women, and seniors meet Mondays through Thursdays. However, league nights may be expanding, as owner Eric Brown has been approached by individuals interested in having a Friday golf league. On Saturdays, the Mike Benca Jr. six-week instructional golf program teaches children the basics of golf and concludes with a tournament in August. Program directors Howie VanRensselaer and Keith Alexander are looking forward to leading this growing group once again. Alexander brings years of experience to the program, as he also caddies at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, which has hosted more golf championships than any other course in the U.S. Brown is excited to see the completion of the course’s brand new events center, a project that has been several years in the making! “The whole process has probably taken about 6 years. We started by moving one green, and then another the following year. Then we began construction of the building, and we’ve done all the work ourselves,” explained Brown. Due to the limited space of the existing clubhouse, which features a full bar and restaurant, the construction of a larger facility for the course’s bigger tournaments was in order. “As soon as our golf outings reached 100 participants, we knew we couldn’t continue to accommodate that many people in our limited space,” said Brown. “The new building is about 3,200 square feet.” Although the primary use of the building is for the golf course’s events and tournaments, it’s available for other activities too, including wedding receptions, reunions, and other occasions that need seating for 100 or more guests. Brown is pleased to announce that “we’ve got a wedding here this September, and we’ve already had people stop by to take a look at the new building to plan their events.” Brown and his crew are now working on putting the finishing touches on the new building. According to Brown, the first tournament of the year is planned for the first week of July, which is when the new building is set to open. Those itching to get out on the green will be pleased to know that Cardinal Hills has already opened for the season and 2017 promises to be a great year! “This is my tenth year [in business] and just about every year, we’ve opened around the second week of March,” explained Brown. “As soon as the weather justifies it, we’re open!” Brown welcomes visitors to his course, which offers special rates and packages for guests of Randolph’s Inn at One Bank Street. On a beautiful, warm day, the grills are fired up so golfers can grab a fresh hot dog or burger and continue on the course. Golfers are sure to meet Lola, Cardinal Hills’ English bull dog (and mascot) who oversees club entertainment and specializes in ball-retrieval. For 2017 rates and cart rental fees, call 716-358-5409 or visit www.cardinalhillsny.com.
Across the street, the R Cardinal Café (133 Main Street) is Randolph’s newest business, and it’s a real treat! Owners Brenda and Tonya Kilby invite you to try their signature Cardinal Classic sandwich, homemade soups and salads, and delicious baked goods including pies, cookies, eclairs, and cheesecake. Then discover the various shopping opportunities along the main drag. Start with Randolph Retail Company (127 Main Street), home of unique gifts, home décor, and beautiful ladies clothing. Owners Tom and Cathy Congdon invite you to explore their beautiful selection of spring clothing from Keren Hart, Ethyl, and more in sizes ranging from extra small to 2X. Randolph Retail Company also carries a wide selection of educational children’s toys including puppets, puzzles, card games, and magnetic play boards, plus baby toys and gifts. Gift certificates and free gift wrapping are available every day! Next door at Yarn for Ewe (129 Main Street), knitters and crocheters will be delighted to find all types and colors of yarns, needles, patterns, buttons, and more. Explore yarns from Bergere de France, Berroco, Cascade, Euro Yarns, Mirasol, Sirdar, and more. Knitting and crochet classes are offered year ‘round on weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays. During these classes, you can get help on a work in progress or participate in a workshop to make a specific project, like the Zip-up-the-Back Baby Sweater, Entrelac Hat, Brioche Cowl, and more. Visit www.yarn4ewe.biz or call 716-267-2070 to learn more and sign up.
MAKE YOUR TRIP AN OVERNIGHT ONE! Once you’re downtown, you may find yourself hesitant to leave! Why not book your weekend at the Inn at One Bank Street, a beautifully remodeled 1904 firehouse that has four guest rooms, including two comfortable suites. Every room is equipped with wireless free internet, a flat screen TV, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, and a private bathroom. Both suites (king and queen) also come with a sleeper sofa, living room, and a dining area with a four-burner cooking top, cookware, and dishes/utensils. 18-HOLE MINIATURE GOLF COURSE, A SCENIC 20-ACRE LAKE, AND FURNISHED CABINS WITH OUTDOOR FIRE PITS COMBINE FOR THE PERFECT GOLF/CAMP GETAWAY
FOUR SEASON RESORT WITH CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSE READY TO WELCOME BACK THE WEB.COM PGA TOUR AND LECOM HEALTH CHALLENGE JULY 3-9
By Dash Hegeman
Peek’n Peak Resort is your four-season playground! Located in Clymer, NY, Peek’n Peak has endless opportunities for year-round recreation and relaxation with family, friends, co-workers, and more!
Tucked away in Limestone, NY you can find a place to get away from it all and escape the stresses of your day-to-day life. Mystic Water Resort, owned and operated by Bill and Karla Rounsville, has been around for fifteen years. It started off as a driving range and as time went on, morphed into a full-time passion project for the couple. Today you will find a variety of family-friendly entertainment options at the resort, including an 18-hole miniature golf course, camping, and a scenic 20-acre lake. The camping accommodations are more along the lines of “glamping”. Each cabin at the resort comes with a furnished living room, two bedrooms (one with a Queen size bed and one with bunk beds), a fire pit and charcoal grill. The fully equipped kitchen also allows guests all the conveniences of modern living even though the view outside the window depicts nothing but laid back country living. The Rounsvilles have uniquely crafted the facility to have a flare that is sure to charm anyone who is looking for a fun-filled family getaway. Throughout the grounds you will find numerous wood carvings that the couple has been collecting for many years. “Our most recent additions were the bench with bears and eagles,” Karla stated. “We also purchased a bar with eagles on both sides, and a tree with owls in it. This piece frames the mirror in the barn. Each year we go to the Ridgeway Chainsaw Carving Show and buy a piece or two to add to our collection.” The miniature golf course is designed specifically to test your short game skills. It’s fun for all ages - no doubt about that - but you’ll definitely find some holes that will leave you questioning your abilities. The course blends natural grass, floral, shrubbery, water, and hand-laid stone. Local landscapers constructed the course and the craftsmanship radiates throughout the entire course. “This year one of our projects is building a beautiful waterfall, which will be located by the mini golf course and visible from the party facilities and gazebo,” said Karla. “We have taken a couple years to plan this and are very excited to complete it. We feel this will be one more feature to help display the beauty of our venue. We recently built a large covered BBQ pit that our caterers and party-goers are thrilled with.” Always thinking about the next step, the couple is contemplating adding a 9-hole, par 3 course to the facility, but at this time, the plans are only on the drawing board. “Owning the resort allows us to show off the natural beauty of this area, the hills, seasons and wildlife,” Karla said. “We enjoy the interaction with our visitors, sharing their special events, and helping them make special memories. It is our goal to make their time spent at the resort enjoyable. This is why we work so hard maintaining the beauty of the resort. This started as a vision, soon turned to discussion, and before we knew it, a dream was realized.” With their family-first focus, the couple stated that they have seen a lot of repeat business over the years. They love being able to welcome old friends back to the resort, just as much as they enjoy seeing new people come and experience it for the first time. Mystic Water Resort is a great place for birthday parties, graduations, corporate outings, reunions, weddings, or just a family getaway. You can learn more about the resort at www.mysticwaterresort.com or by calling 716-925-8553. Mystic Water Resort is located at 620 Parkside Drive, Limestone, NY 14753
The Inn at the Peak distinctively combines old-world tudor-style charm with all the modern amenities and recreational choices of today. Each of the 108 well-appointed guest rooms have been completely renovated. The Peak also features over 200 luxury condominiums. There are plenty of seasonal activities at Peek’n Peak! During the summer months, adventure seekers can try the Aerial Adventure Course, Giant Dual Ziplines, Segway Tours, Archery, Mountain Biking, and the new Soaring Eagle Zipline! The Aerial Adventure Course features eight courses with varying difficulties from crossrope bridges, cable walkways, cargo nets, ladders and ziplines. These courses are suited for all ages and ability levels from beginner to experienced. The 2,000 foot Giant Dual Ziplines soar over the trees from the top of Chairlift 8. Climb the 60-foot tower and experience the beautiful views of the valley below. New this summer, Peek’n Peak will add a Soaring Eagle Zipline. Riders will climb a short 12-foot staircase to the main platform and will load onto the ride, side-by-side, and strap in via lap belts. From there, the ride will ascend backwards along the 700-foot zipline to the ending point. The ride lets go and descends you back 700 feet to the main platform. The ride both back and forth travels at a speed of roughly 30 miles per hour each way. There is no age requirement. Guests can expect a thrilling view of the resort! When it’s time to unwind, the indoor/outdoor pool complex, which is located at the Inn, provides refreshing fun! Enjoy the outdoor 115-foot waterslide and umbrella waterfall, or sit and relax while enjoying a drink and meal at the Cabana Bar. The indoor pool and hot tub is accessible all-year long. Or get pampered at the Serenity Spa by Aveda. Don’t forget to hit the links! Peek’n Peak has a beautiful Championship golf course. The 72-par Upper Golf Course has a unique terrain and natural features, including rolling hills, deep sand bunkers, panoramic views and mature woods that create spectacular views that are unrivaled. The Upper Course at Peek’n Peak has hosted 7 PGA Nationwide Tournaments and is the current host of the Web.com PGA Tour, The LECOM Health Challenge from 2016-2019. This year’s dates are July 3-9, 2017. The tournament will bring tens of thousands of people to the region. The LECOM Health Challenge is a charity event hosted by the Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC). Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the LECOM Student Scholarship Fund, as well as other charities in Chautauqua County and the nearby greater Erie, Pennsylvania area. Looking for something to do during those cold, winter months? Peek’n Peak has got you covered. Snowsports is still at the heart of the resort. The Peak offers 27 slopes and trails, a network of cross country trails, cruisers, bumps, learning hills, terrain parks, and a 7-lane snow tubing arena with magic carpet lift for easy, fun activity in the snow! “TIMES OF YOUR LIFE” Singer Paul Anka is making Mother’s Day extra special this year at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino
A Conversation with Paul Anka HULICK: Mother’s Day this year is going to be very special for a lot of moms out there when you take the stage May 14 at Seneca Allegany Casino Resort. ANKA: Yes. It’s always wonderful when I do a show on a holiday, and Mother’s Day is one of the big ones. I am looking forward to playing there. HULICK: You have contributed to the music industry for decades now. Two of the most iconic songs you have written include “My Way”, for Frank Sinatra and the theme music for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, which has come front and center once again with reruns of the show seven days a week on our local NBC sister station. ANKA: Yes, I did write the theme song for The Tonight Show. I gave Johnny a job working with me in Great Britain on a TV special I had. Then when I got back to New York a while later we ran into each other and he was looking for music, looking for changes on that show, so one thing led to another and I put down a demo and that’s how it happened. HULICK: You’ve written well over 900 songs. Is there a song that you never released that is in the back of your mind? ANKA: There’s some I have written or have done demos for that I haven’t released. I have a file of songs like that that I wait for an opportunity. Once I start thinking of something or it’s in there, I pretty much finish it.
.............................. SUNDAY | May 14, 2017 By Melanie Hulick Legendary Canadian born singer-songwriter Paul Anka will be making moms swoon at the Seneca Allegany Events Center when he plays one show only on Mother’s Day, May 14 at 5pm. Anka has recorded 120 albums over six decades and is still out there filling concert venues with his romantic and heart filled songs that have made him one of the greatest entertainers around the world. Born in Ottawa, Canada in 1941, the singer had his first #1 hit with “Diana” in 1957 and has never looked back. A songwriter for his own hits, he was very much sought after to share his gift with other artists and landed him accolades that have followed him throughout his incredible career. Two of those songs we talk about in the following conversation in which he reveals the one song that he would say was his toughest to give away. Anka has recorded duets with some of music’s biggest stars, like Celine Dion, Ricky Martin, Patti LaBelle, Willy Nelson, Peter Cetera and Kenny G. to name a few. Bring mom out for a very special day and let Paul Anka bring all those wonderful memories back while he sings some of the greatest songs like “Diana”, “My Way”, “Puppy Love”, “Put Your Head On My Shoulders”, “You Are My Destiny” and “Lonely Boy”.
.................................. Tickets to Paul Anka’s performance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $45 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on Paul Anka visit www.paulanka.com.
HULICK: A lot of these songs you wrote were written for other artists throughout your career. Is it hard to write a song that you have a real connection with and let another artist record it? ANKA: I guess the toughest experiment would have been “My Way” because I had a real strong feeling for that one. But I realized that I was too young to really get the optimum out of it. And I knew Frank Sinatra from a very young age and knew he was retiring and he really motivated me to write the song. As I wrote it I had such an affinity for it and felt very strongly about it. I kept going back and forth as to could I really give it up … and I finally came to the decision that I needed to check my ego at the door and realize that he was much older and had a vast appeal in terms of the history and the demographic. So I was happy to give it to him. That had to be the biggest turmoil for me. I knew ultimately I’d have to give that one up. The others were easy … “She’s A Lady” I gave to Tom Jones. He wanted something and I knew he was looking for a certain type of song. But by and large I think “My Way” was the one. HULICK: It seems most entertainers I talk to have a Buffalo connection. Do you? ANKA: Yes! I had been in and around Buffalo for many of my earlier years on a consistent basis because it was a big music center and its closeness to Canada was great because that is where I was from. In the beginning, when I was 15, I went to LA to visit an uncle and I was feeling the bug of music and what I really wanted to do. At the time I had a writing foundation I was working with at a local newspaper … I was working as a journalist and part of that was reading certain books. There was a book I was reading that took place in Africa, which led me to finish the song I was writing about a little town in Africa called “Blau-Wile Deverest Fontaine”. At that point I got a record contract and the only guy that played this song was a guy named “The Hound Dog” out of Buffalo. His name was George Lorenzo and I talked to this guy all the time. Well of course it was never a hit. I’ll never forget that. You could say my career started and ended in Buffalo with this guy! (laughs) HULICK: You were supposed to be on that fateful plane February 3, 1959 that killed Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valans. Have you ever been superstitious about flying? ANKA: I always think about it when I fly. I fly very carefully and I don’t fly in weather. I’m just very cautious of the concept of it. To this day I think about it and what our destinies are. We’re all just a blink away in this world … today with terrorism. The lesson is … enjoy your life today. There’s nothing we can do about yesterday and nothing we can do about tomorrow. Live for the moment.

Golf is a unique sport. You may be playing in a foursome, but it’s your individual score that counts. You might be able to run a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, but that doesn’t mean you’re good within 40 yards of the green. It’s a mental game of inches … the 6 inches between your ears. One might think that a golf club is just a golf club; that, because a driver is $100 more than another, it means you’ll instantly become Tiger off the tee. (Writer’s note: I still haven’t given up hope that Tiger can return to dominance.)
This perception couldn’t be farther from the truth. Enter Rick’s Golf World in Olean, NY. Helping golfers find the right clubs since 1990, it’s a full-service shop that should be a destination for any golfer serious about their swing. With name brands such as Taylor Made, Ping, Puma, Cobra, Callaway, Titleist and FootJoy, owner Pete Lisi has built the business into the reputable one it is today. One of the coolest features offered by any shop in the area, the FlightScope system (on-site at Rick’s Golf World) uses radar to track the actual flight of the golf ball after your swing. Developed by South African electronics engineer Henri Johnson in 1989, FlightScope uses a Doppler radar system to record your ball movement, backspin, flight path, club head speed/ angle and much more. The company originally (and currently still) develops defense radar systems for countries around the world. Lisi bought the system in February 2013 and said it’s been a continued success. With ample space inside the shop for a “BIG” swing cage, the customer doesn’t feel like he or she is swinging the club in a closet. A 210” diagonal screen allows customers to watch where their ball goes after they hit it. This system tracks the ball and swing separately, which gives Lisi improved ability to work with his customers to find them the perfect club. Here’s how it works: a customer can come in and try a bunch of different clubs (specifically, drivers). After the customer hits a couple balls off of different drivers, Lisi will pull up a screen that shows the different clubs’ “angle of attack” and “carry distance” - so if someone is hitting a Callaway driver 10 yards further and straighter than a Taylor Made one, then they’ve found the winner. Fitting is $50, but Lisi will knock that off the retail price if the customer so chooses to purchase it. The FlightScope system is also good for “club gapping”. Lisi explains it this way: “Let’s say you hit your 3-wood 240 yards and your 4-iron 190. We need to find you a club that you can hit at that consistent 200-210 yard range. The customer can try out some hybrids or different clubs to find that sweet spot.” There are different camera-based systems that take individual photographs of the ball’s flight path, but FlightScope is only one of two that actually implements a radar system to track it. Rick’s Golf World is a full-service shop that offers regripping, fitting and anything else a golfer could ask for. If you want to really figure out the best clubs to buy, don’t buy them from some website because they’re cheaper. Head to Rick’s, get the best bang for your buck and support a small business. Rick’s Golf World is open year-round. Pop into the shop, 228 N. Union Street in Olean, NY, or give Pete a shout at 716-373-6400.

Timberdoodle Flats and Marilla Bridges Trail are popular summertime hikes.
R 3 YOGA RETREAT
At Tracy Ridge Campground, you might find a northern saw-whet owl from March through July. Cerulean warblers sing in the oak trees along the Tracy Ridge Trail.
A holistic event for mind, body and spirit, this three-day event will offer various yoga styles for the beginner and expert alike on June 16-18, 2017 at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 300 Campus Drive in Bradford, PA.
Other suggested sites for birding are the Marilla Reservoir, PA Rt. 346 in the Willow Bay area connecting to NY Rt. 280 along the northern portion of the Allegheny Reservoir, and along Rt. 59 at the new birding overlook at Big Bend past Kinzua Beach.
Hatha, Restorative, Ashtanga, Kundalini, Vinyasa and Iyengar will all be part of the program during this inaugural event. A fee of only $200 includes yoga classes, workshops, meals and events which are all centered on relaxation and rejuvenation. Massage therapy services and a Saturday evening meal are offered for an additional cost. Overnight accommodations are available on campus or in the Bradford area at an additional fee.
Birding Tips: • Peak migration period for song birds is mid-April to the end of May. • Generally, birds are secretive and shy. Learning bird songs will aid in species identification. • Observe birds when they are most active in the early morning, especially during breeding season.

MORE THAN 200 SPECIES OF BIRDS Location is everything, they say, and that goes for birding too. More than 200 species of birds can be found in the Forest, including bald eagles and osprey. The most common birds found here are the ruffed grouse (the state bird of Pennsylvania), and the wild turkey. Buzzard Swamp, south of Kane, is a prime area to view these birds. Other popular sites are Timberdoodle Flats, Tracy Ridge Campground, Marilla Reservoir, and the Big Bend Overlook just past the Kinzua Dam. The mourning warbler will likely be seen in clear-cut areas. Some of the most common warblers seen here are yellow, chestnut-sided, yellow-rumped, northern parula and baybreasted. The hard-wooded forests are home to such birds as the yellow-bellied sapsucker, winter wren and hermit thrush. Osprey (pandion halaetus) are a fish-eating large bird of prey, which usually mate for life. Osprey nests can be viewed from Rt. 321 along the Longhouse Scenic Byway north of Kane. Bald eagles (haliaeetus leucocephalus) are among the largest birds of prey. They may weigh up to 14 pounds and have seven-foot wingspans. Bald eagles are readily identified by their white heads and tails; however, they don’t attain this plumage until five years of age. They nest in large trees near water. Bald eagles have been sighted at the Allegheny Reservoir, Tunungwant Creek, Smethport’s Hamlin Lake, and north of Eldred along the Allegheny River and Oswayo Creek. An excellent interpretive trail, Timberdoodle Flats is a 1.4-mile loop trail located along Rt. 59 southwest of Bradford. This trail is named for the American woodcock, also known as the timberdoodle, that uses both the forest and open areas for nesting.
KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK Another great birding site is the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett. PA. Views from the gorge are amazing, as are the new exhibits at the Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center. Arriving at the building entrance, huge steel towers flank the doorway. In the building foyer, your attention will immediately be drawn to the windows at the back of the Center which frame a stunning view of the Kinzua Sky Walk. Interactive exhibits include a replica railroad car which shows film of what it was like when you could ride by rail across the historic Kinzua Viaduct. The story of the innovation and “can-do” spirit of the men who undertook the task in 1882 of building the world’s highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world is told through a series of interactive exhibits. The on-site PA Wilds Gift Shop contains a variety of works by local artisans, writers, and photographers. The hard cover book, The Great Kinzua Viaduct, is a keepsake gift for those interested in the history of this amazing engineering marvel. Open daily from 8am-6pm, admission to the park and to the Visitors Center is free. (Turn the page to read more about Kinzua Bridge State Park.)
TRAIL CENTRAL: HUNDREDS OF MILES OF TRAILS! Trails in McKean County include traditional hiking, birding and biking trails, along with ATV trails, water trails, shopping trails, history trails, and food and wine trails. Hiking and biking trails range from the grand-daddy of all trails - the North Country Trail - the longest trail in the United States, to short, family-friendly trails like Timberdoodle Flats - an interpretive birding trail in the Allegheny National Forest. A favorite scenic trail is the Marilla Bridges Trail, a 1-mile loop with forest and water vistas. Highlights along the trail include the Erik Benjamin Covered Bridge which spans the spillway of the Marilla Reservoir, three rustic wooden trestle bridges, and a delightful gazebo located at the southwest corner of the trail. Use is non-motorized only, but fishermen and kayakers can also enjoy this favorite water spot which offers free public access for recreation. The trailhead is located along Rt. 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford. Downloadable trail maps and detailed descriptions of the over 600 miles of trails in the Allegheny National Forest can be viewed at visitANF.com.

Hidden deep within the forest of northwestern Pennsylvania is an engineering masterpiece ... The Kinzua Viaduct once soared 301 feet high and 2,053 feet across - it was the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world
By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau
THE POWER OF NATURE: TORNADO STRIKES JULY 21, 2003
It was a bridge unlike any the world had ever seen.
Bridge designer C.R. Grimm predicted his creation would last 100 years. And he was right. Grimm’s design used roller expansion bearings where the tower legs were anchored to the masonry foundation piers. This design allowed lateral expansion in the tower legs under temperature loading. But his failure to replace the original 1882 anchor bolts would have catastrophic consequences.
In 1882 General Thomas Kane, a Philadelphia lawyer, decorated American Civil War Veteran, and president of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad and Coal Company, had rich coal deposits south of the Kinzua Gorge. But since his customers were to the north, Kane needed to cross the valley. Kane needed a bridge. Paris-born Octave Chanute, chief engineer for the Erie-Railroad, rose to the challenge. The man who would later help the Wright brothers fly had a bold solution - a bridge unlike any the world had seen. Chief Engineer Octave Chanute contracted the Pennsylvania firm of Clarke, Reeves & Company to design and fabricate the bridge. Adolphus Bonzano designed a wrought iron bridge using his “Phoenix Column,” an engineering breakthrough that enabled tall structures to resist vibration and buckling. The bridge was pre-fabricated in Phoenixville, near Philadelphia, and transported to the site for erection. Once the sandstone foundation piers were in place, 125 men, working 10-hour days, completed the construction in just 94 days. Standing 301 feet tall (24 feet higher than the Brooklyn Bridge) the Viaduct quickly became a tourist destination. Walking out on the bridge was the next best thing to flying. But by 1900, the locomotives and railroad cars hauling coal and timber across the Viaduct became larger and heavier. A stronger steel bridge was required. Using 6.7 million pounds of steel, workers erected a new bridge to replace the original.
THE KINZUA VIADUCT: A TOURIST ATTRACTION Not only was the Kinzua Viaduct successful in transporting Kane’s coal across the valley, it instantly became a popular tourist attraction bringing sightseers from around the globe to visit. Since 1963, the bridge has served as the centerpiece of the Kinzua Bridge State Park. The Kinzua Viaduct was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and the National Register of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in 1982. The Kinzua Viaduct spanned the Kinzua Gorge for more than a century before it partially collapsed under the powerful winds of a tornado in 2003.
In July 2003, engineers and skilled bridge builders were hard at work on a $12 million repair project to reinforce the aging structure. The workers decided to call it a day when the sky went black and the winds rushed in. A tornado tore through the forest, heading straight for Sheffield the Viaduct. Hundreds of trees were ripped from their roots and 11 of the bridge’s 20 towers Sheffield were lifted, twisted and thrown onto the valley floor. Six towers remained standing on the south end; only three towers remained upright on the north end. Engineers later confirmed that winds attacked in three directions. The original 1882 anchor bolts and collar coupling assemblies, which mated the old bolts to the later 1900 construction, had failed. Tidioute

REINVENTED AS THE KINZUA SKYWALK
The remaining six towers of the original Kinzua Viaduct were stabilized and reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk. Towering over the Kinzua Gorge at a height of 225 feet and 624 feet long, the new skywalk has a partial glass floor overlook at the end of the pedestrian walkway which features the historic railroad tracks. Views are breathtaking.
Opened to the public in September 2011, the Kinzua Sky Walk pays tribute to the past while emerging once again as an amazing engineering marvel.
ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP 10 MOST SCENIC SKYWALKS The Kinzua Sky Walk was recognized in 2016 by The Culture Trip, U.K. as one of the top 10 most scenic skywalks in the world.
