rt doesn’t have to come from a famous artist, an adult, someone who majored in art or someone who has earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. At Yongsan Internation School, we see variety of young adults who are able to create art from their own imagination and creativity. No, they’re not known to be famous artists, they don’t earn a living through art but they are amateur artists who have just as much passion and talent. These students at this school are continuing to develop their skills and learn something new everyday. We’ve been able to interview a couple of the students who were influenced by art in their life and were taking art classes at YISS. They were just ordinary high school students who were trying to achieve something a bit different than their other fellow students. We were able to observe their art classes and it was really inspiring to see the passion in all of these young people. Here at YISS, there are talented students who enjoy art and even in many of the hallways at school, you can see their artworks displayed on the walls. They are all eye-catching, unique and deliver different messasges and emotions to people. These kids don’t merely make art, but express themselves through art. Minae Choi, who is currently in 9th grade is known to be one of the best artists in her grade. She is currently in the Foundation of Art and is learning about art in more depth, using various art medias that she hasn’t tried before. In addition, the students in the class take notes and write journals every class, about their thoughts or impressions of a certain artist, quote or artwrok they see. Minae has been attending YISS for quite a while now and had classes with some art teachers in this school including Mr. Foster and Mr. Creech. Let’s take a look at what Minae said:

Q: When was your first interaction with art and how did it start? I guess when I first held my crayon (laughs) during the “infant stage”. We drew a lot in kindergarten as well. Q: Why do you enjoy art? What do you like about it? Art is not limiting. It is so visually provocative. I like it because I can express my ideas through art. My inspirations are derived from integrating one object into another or by translating abstract concepts/ words literally through art. Does that make sense? Q: What are your future goals in regards to art and how are you trying to achieve that here at YISS? My goal is to advance my technical skill in art. I can see the progression in my ability (although it’s currently pretty low) every time I create a new artwork.
