Rocking the House Showhouses are an established way of raising money for a good cause. But FERN SANTINI has taken the concept to a whole new level. For her Austin in Stereo project, she totally revamped an existing lakefront house, working with Paul Lamb Architects, several brand par tners, and her Collaborative of contractors, ar tists, ar tisans, and workrooms. Santini filled the rooms with luxur y furnishings and detailing and installed contemporar y ar tworks and collections she had assembled over years. The house, an ode to the power of music, then became the site of ticketed events which benefited the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. The events, and a share of the proceeds from the sale of the house, have already raised more than $215,000 for HA AM —with more events and proceeds coming this fall.

A STORIED PROPERT Y IN VIRGINIA IS BROUGHT UP TO DATE BY DESIGNER JANIE MOLSTER VIA VIVID COLORS, DAZZLING PATTERNS, AND MORE THAN A SOUPÇON OF FRENCH FLAIR

Set on a 460 - acre farm in Powhatan, Virginia, surrounded by rolling pas ture s and established forests, the house known as Monacan dates from the 1720s, and was par t

the large, gracious rooms with 12-foot ceilings. Mixing blue - chip antiques, many with a French provenance, antique Turkish rugs and rich colors and bold patterns,

The Oscar collection, designed in collaboration with Ann Marie Vering, pays homage to Brown Jordan’s beginnings in 1945 through its materiality, innovation, and craftsmanship. Rope, twisting around the curved metal frame, forms alluring patterns and a striking silhouette from every

angle. The rope brings warmth and an artisanal quality to the collection’s sophisticated aesthetic, while contrasting with the precise angles of the legs and the gentle curve of the back. Oscar creates an ideal balance of comfort, beauty, and versatility for use indoors or out.

Handle with Care San Francisco -based designer SUZ ANNE TUCKER knows California well, so it’s not surprising that she looked to the state’s diverse neighborhoods, towns, and histor y to inspire her new hardware for Nanz, a company that she has worked with repeatedly. The completely coordinated set s of knobs, levers, hinges, and pulls include the rustic hammered Montecito, the Georgian-inspired Bel Air, the Ar t Deco -influenced Holly wood, and the delicately detailed brass San Simeon, as well as designs that nod to Nob Hill and Tiburon— a range of styles suitable for embellishing any room in any state.

The home in Bel Air was distinguished, designed by noted California architect, Gordon Kaufmann who had worked on the L A Times building. But its accompanying one -acre garden was in disrepair, confusing, and hard to navigate. The client asked

PATRICIA BENNER to better link the house with the pool and guest house on one side and a large, secluded natural bowl on the other. Benner installed stone retaining walls and a flight of steps to emphasize the bowl’s gentle cur ve. California natives, drought-tolerant

Holland & Sherry’s newest wallcovering collection, Des Champs, draws its name from the fields of natural flax in Northern France and Belgium. The line is comprised of a curated selection of textures and colors that celebrate the splendor of linen and raw silk. Care is taken

in each step: from the fields where the flax flowers are harvested, to the spinning and weaving of the fibers into lustrous linens. Our silk threads, woven in India, have natural variations in color and thickness, allowing the finished product to appear alive and dynamic.

Hitting the Floor

Nearly 30 years ago, when two American artists working in China decided it might be fun to have a rug woven for their New York loft, they had no idea that they were about to launch FORT STREET STUDIO—and transform the rug industry. In their first book, A Tale of Warp & Weft, Janis Provisor and Brad Ford tell how they cajoled reluctant silk weavers, subverted Chinese bureaucracy, translated watercolors into pixelated weaving patterns, and launched a whole new aesthetic in rugs. Their silk and wool carpets quickly became designer favorites, and their exquisitely modulated colors and innovative techniques continue to set new standards.

When a young California couple approached HEIDI BONESTEEL and MICHELE TROUT of the Los Angeles-based firm Bonesteel Trout Hall to help design their first yacht, the clients had no intention of ending up with a grand floating palace. They wanted a ship that would reflect their active

lifestyle and relaxed aesthetic. But if the designers were on board, the renowned shipbuilders Damen Yachting / Amels, based in the Netherlands, were initially a bit skeptical, having never worked with a California firm. But af ter two years of traveling to meet with the naval

architec t s and shipbuilder s, the super yacht Nomad fully reflect s the exper tise of both the builder and the designers. The streamlined super yacht Nomad is fun, fleet, and fast— a contemporar y take on an Old -World discipline, and a comfor table, low- key, and stylish new take on luxury.

Optimize storage: When storing your fine wines at home, maintain a cellar that is climate controlled and monitored. Keep your wine at a consistent temperature of approximately 55 degrees F (+/-10 degrees) with a humidity level of 60 (+/-10) percent to preserve the corks. Avoid locations near a staircase, kitchen, or furnace room which could expose the collection to vibrations, heat and water damage. Transport and store wine carefully: Use a professional transportation company with climate-controlled trucks equipped with air-ride suspensions and GPS tracking. If storing wines offsite, select a professional chubb.com

wine storage facility that has been vetted by your insurance company. Get the right insurance: Chubb specializes in protecting fine wines and will make you whole again if your wine is damaged, spoiled, lost, or stolen, regardless of how it happened.

Urban Expressions For inspiration for their new collection of rugs, ANNA AGAPOVA and her par tner in the London design firm O&A, Oleg Klodt, looked to the landmarks of four global cities. The soaring birds in London’s parks, the Gothic stone traceries of Paris, the shadows of the distinctive fire escapes in New York’s Soho, and the snow- covered ornamental railings and the drawbridges of St. Petersburg were interpreted in five designs that make up the Cit yscapes collection, produced in par tnership with Manufacture de Tapis de Bourgogne, a French company that has been producing handcraf ted rugs since 1958.

The collection includes lamps, sconces, and pendant lighting, and each piece is highly versatile. While the design is skillfully simple, the use of materials and the sensuous shapes make them a statement feature.

It’s not ever y client who has accompanied Russian cosmonauts into space, or who wants his apar tment to function as much as a research lab and conference space as a home. When a South African sof tware entrepreneur asked for all this for his West Village apar tment overlooking the Hudson River, LEE MINDEL of SheltonMindel came up with an ingenious— and surprisingly low-tech— solution. Inspired by Jean Prouvé’s Maison Tropical, with its manual shutters and sliding panels, the architect designed a freestanding interior wooden cabin. This not only allowed for a flexible open-plan and continuous circulation, but it also liberated the 140 feet of arcaded windows so that all views become accessible. An L- shaped wall of highly finished concrete separates the public and private areas and continues out onto the 3000 - square -foot terrace. A structural column between kitchen and lounge now suppor ts a sur f-board shaped bar, making what could have been an obstruction into a featured design element.

In Avalon, NJ, MEGAN GORELICK linked the pool to the adjacent family room, making it one expansive space for enter taining and relaxation.

At a home on California’s Monterey Coast, NICHOL AS PROIET TI of Nicholas Vincent Design sited the pool to take advantage of dramatic views of Stillwater Cove and make it easily accessible to the living quar ters.

CHRISTINE and JOHN GACHOT of Gachot Studios craf ted a house in the dunes of Amagansett, on Long Island, that echoes the colors of the surrounding vegetation; the wood deck reiterates the warm wood used for the ceiling of the interior.

For a house in Redding, CT, JANICE PARKER shaped outdoor spaces that respected the history of the land while adding contemporary elegance, working closely with architects Shope Reno Whar ton. The infinity-edge pool is backed by pleached linden trees and overlooks a new birch grove.

Achieving balance has taken on particular importance. Each of us seeks to define a better sense of authenticity and relevance for ourselves and the work we do— efforts that please the eye, the soul, and the artist within. For Arteriors, this harmony is found by melding traditional artistry with technological innovation, raw materials with storied techniques, and new finishes with modern inspirations. The craftsmanship that emanates from our studio is an expression of the intelligence of the artist and the skill of the hand, an orchestration of materials and processes that understands that the true test of any object is the feeling it evokes.

Tasked with restoring a classic 19th- centur y farmhouse, or mas, just outside Avignon, SUSAN BEDNAR LONG worked with a local renovation specialist to make sure that the home, barn, and stone guest cottage were up to date and comfor table, but without losing any of their

authenticity. The two -year project incorporated locally sourced antique stone fireplaces, floors, sinks, and wood doors. French craf tspeople were commissioned to forge traditional ironwork, fabricate customdesigned wardrobes, and apply special paint techniques to give

a sense of patina to newly installed millwork. The clients’ inherited furniture pieces were supplemented with antiques and custom pieces upholstered in Pierre Frey fabrics, so everything would seem collected over time, and nothing would detract from the home’s powerful Provençal charm.

A cherry tree in full bloom is the most visually splendid moment of Spring. Its exquisite flower is known in Japan as sakura. Artistic Tile captures that magic in mosaic form via Sakura, with drifting blossoms inset into a swirl of stone, stocked in two colorways: Bianco Dolomiti, with blossoms of Vanilla

Onyx, Calacatta Bluette, Azul Cielo, and Calacatta Gold; and Calacatta Bluette, with blossoms of Bianco Dolomiti, Artemisia Grey, and Azul Cielo. A sister pattern, Sakura Falls, features the same swirling background, but free of floral ornament and is stocked in three colorways.

Favorite Things A principal and par tner at DesignWorkshop, landscape architect MIKE ALBERT heads up the firm’s Aspen of fice, where he focuses on landscape and urban design and planning. A confirmed modernist, he is also an advocate of the move away from highly cultivated and ornamental gardens toward outdoor spaces that are more restorative and natural in their aesthetics, relying on native plant species. Yet surprisingly, he claims to lack a green thumb.

PHOTOGRAPHER Michael Kenna

ST YLE ICON Dan Kiley He was one of the most important and influential Modernist landscape architects of the 20th century. His approach to design – with clear underpinnings of order and geometry – is perhaps most noted at the acclaimed Miller Garden in Columbus, IN, which accompanies a house designed by Eero Saarinen. The garden’s honey locust allée, rising out of a gravel plane and terminating upon the Henry Moore sculpture, is as timeless as it is iconic.

PL ANT Any cactus or succulent I have always been drawn to plants that possess strong, simple forms. As such, they provide wonderful accents, both for interior and exteriors. And admittedly, with my lack of a green thumb, it also doesn’t hurt that they don’t need constant watering.

TREE Aspens These trees have such an interesting story, in terms of the form and stature, and their iconic fall color. But what’s also fascinating is how aspens colonize areas. When found in groves, the repetition of their vertical white trunks, often backdropped by evergreen forests, create such powerful lines in the landscape.

DRAWING IMPLEMENT Prismacolor Pencils I used them for this sketch of a Montana ranch currently on the boards.

PUBLIC GARDEN Nasher Sculpture Garden, Dallas, TX Designed by landscape architect Peter Walker, this project is impeccable in its detailing, and in its juxtaposition between elements—plantings and sculpture, light and shadow, the horizontal plane and the canopy of oak trees. Fountains creatively mask noise and views from the adjacent streetscape.

At Decorators Supply, the craft of centuries past gives expression to new forms of design and detail. Our highly skilled craftsmen bring extraordinary beauty into the places where we live and breathe every day, creating ornamental lanterns, hardware, and fixtures, and custom-designed plaster ceiling treatments and crown details. Bespoke design, expert craftsmanship, and a high sensitivity to detail are our forte.
