J U N E 2020

H I VE Our world is in the midst of great change. The unique and dramatic combination of a public health and human rights crisis has produced circumstances and challenges unseen in our lifetimes. The DLN stands in solidarity with the Black community. We are committed to listening, learning, speaking up when appropriate, and looking inward to improve as allies, friends and members of a better society. The senseless discrimination and killing of innocent Black people in our country and around the world must end. We are working to take actionable steps to fulfill our promise of improvement. We hosted our first conversation around diversity in our industry, but that is just a start – these conversations must and will be ongoing. We are committed to finding new ways to recruit a more diverse membership and feature a more diverse universe of members in our communications. We will find and share new resources for our community to advance learning and improving. The DLN cannot do this alone. It will take an individual commitment from each and every member of our community to take an honest look at how our words and actions perpetuate the obvious lack of diversity in our industry and of racism in our world. It will be difficult, but we are here and committed with you.

Mountain Retreat The sky is the limit in this contemporary design. Kelly and Stone Architects’ striking mountain retreat near Lake Tahoe blurs the distinction between indoor and outdoor living with Grabill Windows and Doors. A 9-foot horizontal plank pivot entry door with a custom patina bronze inlay welcomes with the epitome of grandeur. Aluminum-clad, rift-sawn White Oak windows and doors in unique combinations stun. The great room features a pocketing sliding door that provides a seamless transition to the home’s exterior. It expands nearly 19 feet wide and disappears into the adjacent wall. MetroChic Barry Goralnick designed MetroChic, the inaugural collection for Villeroy & Boch’s Signature line, its most premium offering. Goralnick explains, “Combining architectural, Art Deco-inspired lines with luxe colors like black and gold conveys celebration and prosperity. Innovative shapes help people bring this joy and richness into every day. Whether entertaining friends or having a snack alone, eating with good design is always a treat.” The fact that it took only 11 months from concept to launch (timing usually unheard of in product development), gaining global support from regions B R OW S E T H E

A 1908 HISTORIC RENOVATION The Albert Wilson True House in Hinsdale, Illinois was originally designed

by architect E.E Roberts in 1908. Thankfully, the home was saved by a couple

who had an appreciation for the Prairie School aesthetic and wanted to educate themselves more on its Vienna Secession and Victorian influences in an effort to honor the architectural roots of the home. With those things in mind, I set to task on this large-scale renovation that was outside my more typical edgy style. Modernizing the home while maintaining the architectural integrity was a challenge, and the Groin vaulted ceilings, art glass designs, and custom paneling were painstakingly designed, drafted, and executed by the best craftsmen. Original features were retained and refurbished while clean-lined furnishings, decadent fabrics, rich colors and textures were added to complement the architecture and make it feel current, at the same time.

Natasha Baradaran Debut Collection Natasha Baradaran’s debut textile collection is a love letter to lace. From boudoirs to bras, lace has long been woven into the feminine ideal— today, the struggle for womanhood has never been more real—and Baradaran’s textiles subvert this historically fem fabric to create something entirely different. Lace here is abstracted, stripped of sentimentality and manifested as something bolder and more contemporary. The result is a covetable collection that unravels traditional gender norms and begs to be appointed.

Collaboration on the road to success...

can yield an abundance of gratification, even when it happens in an unorthodox way. When the star-studded team of architect Celeste Robbins, landscape architect Doug Hoerr, and interior designer Shawn Henderson assembled, they didn’t anticipate that the typical creative sessions around a table would not happen when crafting this home set on 89 acres in Aspen. While the husband saw the potential of the site, with its sprawling views of Aspen, Buttermilk and Snowmass mountains, the wife was not as excited at the idea of being fifteen minutes outside of town. Ultimately the views and palette won. But as a result, it became a primary focus to create a retreat spectacular enough to give visitors plenty of reason to venture outside of Aspen proper. As the project commenced, each team member was brought in independently to do their part. The trio had no choice but to be open to one another’s ideas as changes were made to the initial plans. Although the trio admit they might have had more fun growing and learning through direct collaboration, this unconventional approach forced a reliance on trust and their shared desire to celebrate the connection between the property, architecture, the landscape design, and interiors. The process allowed for significant improvement of early ideas by one another, with each member remaining open to concepts being stretched, and inevitably learning valuable lessons about the true spirit of collaboration.

"The house appears to be dropped in, with no disturbance to the land." —Celeste Robbins

JUNE 202 0 /55 / 9

From the start, Celeste wanted to create a dialogue between the house, the property, and the views—the land almost seems to fold on itself, with the manicured landscaping surrounding the house softening and blending the edges of the natural rugged landscape. Her goal was to break down the scale of the house by creating a complex sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces that spoke to one another, and in turn to the views. Shawn, and then Doug, came in with their points of view. Shawn understood the language of the plan and ran with it creating comfortable spaces, and making smaller changes to the kitchen tiles and materials. Doug kept plantings native and sustainable, then developed a graceful 200-foot-long low retention wall to transform the long drive into a welcoming gesture, a moment that celebrates and softens the transition from the natural landscape to the manicured, intentional spaces that surround the house. In the end, the house and its setting became a complex yet welcoming modern home with a soft hand, which embodies how successfully the team worked together — with one idea leading to another — even if they weren’t in the same room.

The house was designed to advocate for the landscape, transforming it into a kind of a massive painting.
