The scope of the South African Design Survey was to map the characteristics of the South African design sector. Within the scope of the project, the following four questions were addressed: > What are the structure/systems that define the design economy in South Africa and what changes could lead to the recognition and promotion of design’s contribution to the overall economy in the long run?;

> Who are the participants in the design economy, what are their numbers and what is needed by particular populations, to 'JWFPG4PVUI"GSJDBµTNPTUQSPNJOFOUPSHBOJTBUJPOT support their successful participation in the FOHBHFE JO EFTJHO QSPNPUJPO BOE QSPGFTTJPO long term?; NBOBHFNFOUGPSNFEBQBSUOFSTIJQBOETVCNJUUFE B DPNNPO &YQSFTTJPO PG *OUFSFTU BT B SFTFBSDI > QBSUOFSPOCFIBMGPG4PVUI"GSJDB5IJTQBSUOFSTIJQ XBTTVCTFRVFOUMZFMFDUFEUPQBSUJDJQBUFJOUIF*%" 8PSME%FTJHO4VSWFZQJMPUQSPKFDU

How can approaches to governance, as well as particular programmes, services and initiatives strategically contribute to the enduring growth of capacity within the design community to foster and promote design’s contributions in the long term, and what are viewed as impediments/stumbling blocks/constraints?; and
