Show those legs with Confidence Do you limit your wardrobe to garments that cover bulging and discolored veins? Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores?

Dr. Thompson with The Center For Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins PERMANENTLY! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease. Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.

Procedures are performed in-office, with no downtime.

Treatments are covered by private insurance and Medicare. No Referrals Needed.

Dr. Michael McGehee, originally from Mertzon, Texas, came to Hickory in 2016 to join the OrthoCarolina Hickory team. Dr. McGehee attended Angelo State University for his undergrad and University of Texas Houston for medical school. Following a University of Hawaii internship and a Baylor / University of Texas Alliance residency, he completed a fellowship with OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC. He truly believes there is great teamwork at OrthoCarolina Hickory, and being involved in the community is a high priority.

I enjoy educating patients as to what is happening and the reason we choose certain treatment options for them.

When not out trying new restaurants, you’ll find him hiking and exploring new areas. All which he enjoys doing with his new bride Arielle.

A New Beginning E

By Kathy Wheeler

ach morning we have an opportunity for a new beginning, a chance to make decisions that affect, not only our present, but also our future. As much as we can control our lives, where we find ourselves today is mostly a result of past decisions. Are your decisions moving you in the direction you want to go? If not, the New Year may be the time to change that direction. January is the perfect month to look at the big picture and develop some habits that will put you on track to a happier, healthier, more prosperous and successful life. I believe it is safe to say that what you think about is a good place to start. Have you convinced yourself that some things are true when they are actually subjective or false? Self-talk, or having thoughts like, “I can’t do that” or “I’m not talented” or “Nothing ever works out for me” all negatively impact your life and prevent you from doing what you really want to do. You give up before you even try, because you have convinced yourself that you are a failure; you think your limited resources are making your goals and dreams impossible. That’s only true if you believe it! Your thoughts become a self-fulfilling prophecy. The smallest shift in the way we look at something, especially ourselves, can produce huge change and a totally different outcome. Many times, you can begin to change these thoughts just by acknowledging that you have them, rejecting them as being false statements, and replacing them with a new truth. It may take a while to turn it around. You believe 8

these false statements because you repeated them to yourself over and over again until you accepted them as fact. The same will work with a new, more positive statement. At first, it may even feel like you are lying to yourself, but you are just correcting the misinformation that you have been feeding your brain. Don’t look at where you are when you are deciding where you want to go. Meeting one person, receiving one opportunity, or having one bright idea can change your life drastically. Don’t limit yourself by asking the question, “Where do I go from here?” Instead ask, “Where do I want to go?” You don’t have to have all the answers or even all the skills needed to get there. You can get support from others who have the knowledge and skills you lack. Don’t fall into the trap of waiting until you reach a goal to be happy. Decide to enjoy each day and be happy where you are in the present. Hey, as your life and goals progress, you may never be in this position again, so latch onto the joys your current situation produces. Goals are great and reaching them brings celebration, but accomplishment is a temporary pleasure and is quickly replaced with another goal including new challenges and struggles. Learn to enjoy the journey. Believing in yourself and your ability to change is the first step to developing good habits. Most of us know what we need to do, but are we convinced that we can make the necessary changes? I believe you can! Hickory Living Magazine wishes you a successful 2018!

“After my experience working with Faith, I fully understand the wholehearted recommendations of her I got from friends,” Lynda Winningham shared. “We had a lot going on—we were trying to sell our house long-distance from Florida after a death in the family. Faith and her team were patient, knowledgeable, very easy to work with, and their professional skills are what got our house sold. I can’t imagine anyone else helping us sell our home.” I heard this same glowing sentiment from several very satisfied clients, and I do believe Faith Parker Properties is a real estate team you can have faith in…just like their tag line proclaims. 12

THE INS AND OUTS OF REAL ESTATE For anyone buying or selling their first home, folks who have moved several times and are familiar with the process, or baby boomers downsizing from their long-treasured home, the most important decision each will make is selecting their real estate agent. “Our clients benefit from our team’s capacity to offer triple service,” Faith told me, “that is, the three of us share our insights, knowledge, and expertise to ensure that your sale or home purchase is successful. We realize your home is an investment. Together, our team has over 50 years’ experience in this region helping clients buy and sell their home. We’re here to put your best interest as our number one priority.” A TRIPLE SERVICE TEAM Faith Parker is a people person. Only a real estate agent who is dedicated to

her clients and their success could rise to and remain near the top of all agents in their MLS. “My dad was in construction and real estate development in Key West,” Faith explained, “so I grew up with that kind of enterprise in my blood.” Faith’s career started in 1978 in residential and commercial investment property management, an exciting and challenging way to learn the ropes, and she has been a licensed real estate agent the past 34 years. “I believe this business is exactly where I am supposed to be,” Faith told me. “It’s an extension of who I am and what I love doing the most—helping people.” Shane Greene adds, “Faith is a wealth of knowledge in this industry and loves working with sellers. I admire her desire to do what’s best for our clients. She is the driving force for our firm.” Faith is a leader in her church, director of the women’s ministry, and personal mentor to many women over the years. She undertakes

her role with a servant’s heart, at church and in her business. She has written two affirmative books, Lost in the Wilderness and In My Father’s House. Faith’s husband, Jerry, is a retired colonel from the army, and she has two daughters, Melissa Watts and Meleah Sykes. With five grandkids, there’s plenty of fun, excitement, and love swirling around her family. And, Faith surrounds herself with a generous, thoughtful, and successful team.

Shane Greene is the broker-in-charge for the firm and makes sure all transactions run smoothly. He is hands-on for most anything that happens in the business. “I work hard to provide exceptional customer service,” Shane said, “and since we each live in and know this area, our clients are well served when they select us as their real estate experts. We can list and sell homes most anywhere, but as specialists in the greater Hickory area, we have a lot to offer.” “What gives our firm an edge are Shane’s excellent photos that put your home in the spotlight—they look like a page out of Better Homes and Gardens,” Faith told me, as we looked through some of his recent work. “As a master photographer with 30-plus years’ experience, he showcases what’s best about a home. After advising our seller on staging their home, the resulting photos on our website, brochures, videos, and social media outlets show the home at its best.” Shane interjected, “Most buyers start their search online, so it’s important for the photos to make a great first impression. Many call to schedule a private tour, although there have been offers made just from viewing the photos.” Shane’s wife, Bonnie, manages the studio and helps with the real estate marketing with brochures and videos. They have two children and two grandchildren. Melissa Watts has been coworker with Faith for over 13 years. As office administrator, Melissa’s role in the firm is crucial. “We’re all well-informed in everything happening in the office—we make a really great team,” she said. “I manage details in contracts and paperwork, serve as MLS liaison, maintain our online presence and make certain the marketing of your home is up to date and promoted effectively. We keep each other up to speed at every step.” Shane adds, “She is the keeper of our day-to-day operations. Once she has a file, it’s like magic.” Melissa’s husband, Steven, manages his father’s business, but the couple’s pride and joy are their four children. “When we aren’t doing things with our kids, we’re doing things with our church,” Melissa said.

SELLING AND BUYING A HOME “From the moment our home’s market analysis took place, to signing the paperwork at closing, Faith and her team managed every detail positively and professionally,” Keith Campbell shared. “Communication was always easy, and we got prompt, genuine, and realistic responses—so

valuable with something as important as selling your house.” Keith’s wife, Nancy, explained that Shane’s photos, from the driveway down to the waterfront, were a definite advantage in showing their home. “We are always happy to recommend Faith Parker Properties to anyone looking for a professional, friendly team,” Nancy added. There are certain specifics that you need from your real estate team. Faith, Shane, and Melissa have it down. “Sellers need to be well informed of the current market data so we can help set the appropriate listing price and make a successful marketing plan,” Faith explained. “When a property is priced right, it is not uncommon to be under contract in a week or two. Our exceptional customer service supports our work at every step.”

Buyers are looking for the best advice on the best deal. They need professional help in understanding if a listing is overpriced or is an opportunity they should pursue. They want to know right away what’s new on the market, and they are grateful when their buying experience is hassle free, convenient, and well guided. Young, first time buyers and seasoned home shoppers are served best when the advice they get is honest, reliable, and timely. Faith Parker’s team delivers. YOUR HOME IS AN INVESTMENT Partnering with the right real estate team is critical if you want to get the most out of your largest investment, your home. Whether selling or buying, professional advice and guidance are key in this ever-changing market. Faith, Shane, and Melissa will cover all the bases and point you in the right direction. And they accomplish this with integrity, genuine caring, concern, and successful experience. “We counted on them to be honest and up front with what to expect…we knew they were watching out for us,” the Morris family shared. “Without a doubt, we have found a real estate team you can have faith in, Faith Parker Properties.”

What's Cooking?! Classic Pecan Pie

There is nothing better than gathering with friends and family for a good meal. Whether you are preparing the whole meal, or bringing dessert or a salad, try these recipes!

Classic Pecan Pie

Prep: 15 minutes • Cook: 70 minutes • Serves: 10

1 6

pie dough (9 inches) tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled 1 cup light corn syrup 1 cup light brown sugar 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 3 large eggs, lightly beaten ½ teaspoon salt 2½ cups raw pecan halves

Place baking sheet in oven. Heat oven to 350˚ F. Line pie pan with rolled out pie dough. Press into edges and up sides. Use fingers or fork to create decorative edge. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together butter, corn syrup, brown sugar and vanilla extract. Add eggs and salt, and whisk until mixture is even. Fold in pecan halves. Pour mixture into pie crust and spread evenly with spatula. Use pieces of aluminum foil to cover edges of pie crust. Place pie on prepared baking sheet and bake 60-70 minutes, or until pie is set in center. Remove pie from oven and allow to cool completely before serving or chilling. Note: Pie can be made a day ahead and refrigerated overnight. Allow pie to come to room temperature before serving. Recipes and photos courtesy of American Pecan Council

Acorn Squash Salad with Pecan Vinaigrette Prep: 15 minutes • Cook: 35 minutes • Serves: 4

Squash: 1 small acorn squash 1 tablespoon olive oil ¼ teaspoon sea salt Dressing: ½ cup raw pecan pieces ¼ cup olive 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon maple syrup ¼ teaspoon sea salt Salad: 3-4 handfuls baby spinach 1 ½ cups cooked farro 1 medium shallot, thinly sliced 1 ounce crumbled goat cheese

Heat oven to 425˚ F. To create a base, slice off a small part of one side of the squash. Trim the ends from the squash, cut it in half lengthwise, and scoop out the sides. Place cut-side down and cut squash into 1/4-inch thick slices. Place on sheet tray and toss with olive oil and salt. Roast until squash and peels are tender, 30-40 minutes. While squash is roasting, heat small skillet over medium heat. Add pecans and toast, shaking pan, until nuts are fragrant. Transfer 1/3 cup of pecans to bowl and reserve remaining pecans for topping. Add oil, vinegar, maple syrup and salt while nuts are still warm. Stir vigorously and set aside. In a large bowl, combine spinach, farro, shallot, half the squash and half the dressing. Toss to combine then lay remaining squash on top of salad. Drizzle with remaining dressing and sprinkle with goat cheese and remaining toasted pecans before serving. Note: Acorn squash skin is edible but needs roasting long enough to make it tender. If unsure, use delicata squash or skinless butternut squash. HICKORY LIVING • JANUARY 2018

Keep Moving © | RomoloTavani

By Lauren Davidson

his past year has been a growing one for me, career-wise. It’s my fifth year out of school, and it took me quite a while to gain momentum in my field.

When I first graduated, I worked all kinds of odd jobs while pursuing writing. I had no idea what I was doing; I didn’t have a mentor, and I did a lot of work for free. I just kept hassling people to work with me. Little by little, I built up my portfolio until I could actually charge for my work—that was a big day of celebration for me. It wasn’t much, but eventually, even though I had officially only held jobs as a sushi waitress, babysitter, and retail worker, I spun it into a great job copywriting for a large corporation. I was so proud of myself, and every day I went into work just beaming. I was finally getting to do what I went to school for and what I had dreamed of doing— writing. That was the best job I ever had. When the commute got to be too tough, I found another dream job, editing a magazine. I’ve never had a clear career trajectory in mind, but I knew that I loved to tell other people’s stories, and I just wanted to keep doing that. Now, I’ve found myself in a new position. The company that owned the magazine fell apart and everyone left. I ended up getting a job in a completely different field where I use none of the skills that I worked for so many years sharpening. Realizing your dream can be unnerving. It gives you something to strive for, to make plans about, to keep as a goal, but it is really disappointing when you get steered off course, which happens to us all, right? 24

I’m not one to veg out with Netflix when I get home from work, so I decided to do something about the fact that I was no longer feeling creatively fulfilled. I had to stay at my job to keep my paycheck, but I could utilize my free time to put together a project that was just for me. So that’s what I did. I started up an e-newsletter that I produce every single week. I get to write whatever I want, and I don’t have to censor myself. It may not seem like much, but people around town have been really supportive, and when I reached my goal of 100 subscribers before my first email came out, I felt a surge of pride. Strangers had signed up! Sometimes people send me emails saying how much they love what I’m doing—it’s the best feeling in the world. The point is, even if you suffer a setback, whether in your career or in other aspects of your life, reevaluate where you are and what you need to do to get to where you want to be. Then do it.

Starting A Book Club © | monkeybusinessimages

By Jennifer Krawiec

Long before the queen of daytime television invited authors and viewers into her home for the most famous of book clubs, people gathered regularly to discuss scientific discoveries and literature of their day. By the early 1900s, women’s literary societies were growing. In the mid1920s, Book-of-the-Month club and The Literary Guild, both mail-order book clubs, rose in popularity. Those companies exist online today, but in the 1980s, discount chain bookstores pushed mail order book clubs from the market.

clubs are comprised of members who only have the topic or theme of discussion in common.

Libraries, bookstores, and online forums provide outlets for book clubs and offer a range of styles and subjects. If you cannot find one which meets your needs locally, it is more than feasible to start your own book club.

If you enjoy reading a variety of topics and themes, choose your titles from a popular bestseller list. Not every book will appeal to all members, but choosing from different genres and authors will keep discussions fresh. The bonus is, you may unexpectedly enjoy a book that was not on your radar.

Choose a purpose First, decide on your reason for being. Are you looking for casual interaction with fellow bookworms? Or, do you desire a high-level, intellectual discussion? The answer will determine who you invite to participate and where you will look for members. Casual groups are usually made up of friends and acquaintances, while more serious book

Choose a theme––or not The structure of book clubs usually relates to members’ interests and can be themed or based on current bestsellers. If you prefer a certain genre over others, then have fun with that. Some examples include: mystery, romance, horror, 18th century British literature, or 20th century women authors.

Choose a leader Decide before you begin if you want to lead the group, and if so, do you want that role indefinitely? You can opt to have a leader who runs the show for a finite length of time, then change leadership when their term is over. Another option is to choose a new leader with

each new title. For example, a member who recommends a book that is of interest to them gets to lead the discussion for that book. Choose a time and place When you have your members together, choose the time and frequency of meetings. It is imperative that you give everyone ample time to read the selection, therefore meeting once per month is a popular choice. Consistency is key with the meeting times. For example, scheduling your meetings on the first Tuesday, or the fifteenth of the month allows all members to put the recurring event on their calendars. Possible meeting locations include libraries, coffee shops and restaurants, or in the home of one of the club members. Enjoy The work you put in will be worth the reward. Being part of a book club means you are guaranteed to learn and to gain new perspectives. Check online for more tips on how to organize discussions, what formats to use, and how to get the most out of your book club. As Jane Austin said, “I declare, after all, there is no enjoyment like reading!” HICKORY LIVING • JANUARY 2018
