Welcome to the November issue. This year is rapidly drawing to a close. In just a few short weeks, the Christmas shopping season will be in high gear. The stores will be packed with shoppers and the hustle and bustle of the holiday season will be upon us.

LIVING Living the Good Life

November 2011

But before we get to the Christmas season, we have to get past the turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is truly a special holiday and it comes at a good time. It allows us to pause and catch our breath before the rush of Christmas parties and gift giving begin.

Mailing Address - 1670 E. Broad Street, Suite #195 Statesville, NC 28625 828-464-4060 E-mail - HickoryLiving@gmail.com

As we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this year, take a minute to give thanks for all you have. Most of us, myself included, don't have to look very hard to find many things for which we are thankful. Also, please remember those who are less fortunate and lend a hand to a friend or neighbor in need.

HICKORY HICKORY LIVING LIVING •• NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2011 2011

“All that glitters is not gold,” Shakespeare once wrote, but I believe the actual truth is, all that glitters is at Molly Malone's in Hickory! Walk into the spacious boutique on Highway 70, just behind Olive Garden, and you will see what I mean. With Molly Malone’s glamorous image smiling down from her overlook atop the far wall, fashion conscious customers are wowed with the huge selection of dazzling jewels, handbags, boots, belts, jeans, and all the stylish clothing that fills the boutique’s 1400 square feet of shopping adventure. Of course, Molly, the store’s fictional namesake, has help selecting this display of women’s delights–Amanda Rogers, owner and boutique diva, is there to assist and consult with anyone who arrives with power shopping on her mind! “We’re well known for our one-ofa-kind jewelry and handbag selections, but since May, when we moved into our new, much larger Hickory location, I’ve been adding more and more new lines of unique clothing,” Amanda shared as she showed me around. “I’m always looking for stylish trendy treasures–clothes, jewelry, accessories–all the things women love to wear. And here at Molly Malone’s there’s very little that’s priced over $100!” Indeed, the prices at this spectacular boutique could not be better. For less than you’d likely spend at a department store for one or two items, you can walk out of Molly Malone’s in a complete, high fashion look from head to toe! FULL TO THE BRIM To say the selection is incredible is an understatement. It’s what keeps women coming back for more! Want to put together a trendy casual look?

Start at the foundation with Spanks undergarments, step into stylish Miss Me denim jeans and go from there. Amanda can help you select the perfect knit shirt by Peace, Love, Mom tees, layer that with a lacy vest, warm sweater or soft scarf, sprinkle in some silvery Brighton jewels, maybe a complementary belt or bag. Lace camis, micro fiber leggings come one size fits all. Pick out some comfortable, fun SwitchFlops or try on Alegria’s stylish clogs and Mary Janes. Top with a faux fur jacket or try on Corky’s colorful rain boots, and you are ready for any fall weather. “Women always want to look their best and be comfortable–at the office, on outings with the kids or out shopping with girlfriends,” Amanda explained as she pulled a stylish pair of jeans and sweater from the rack. “Our customers are typically in their 30s, but we have regular teen shoppers, college girls and grandmoms!” PLEASING ALL CUSTOMERS “I really want my customers to feel good about themselves while they are here,” Amanda explained. “And when they leave, I want them to be so pleased with their selections and shopping experience, they’ll come back again and again, maybe bring in their mom or daughters!” Amanda spends serious time shopping the fashion markets in New York and Las Vegas. She searches out unique new styles, fabrics and colors that she knows her customers will enjoy. “Because I buy just one item in each size, and one-of-a-kind, affordable fashions that you won’t find in other stores in Hickory, our inventory changes every week,” says Amanda. “We usually have 12 to 15 new customers come in each day, HICKORY LIVING • NOVEMBER 2011

and they quickly become regulars when they see that there’s always something new in the store. Women who’d been shopping with us at the previous location love our new selections, especially our clothes.” A FAMILY AFFAIR Amanda has fashion in her blood. Her first ventures in retail—in-home jewelry shows and managing Rack Room Shoes stores–got her started. She opened Body Elements, a handbag and jewelry store in downtown Statesville in 2001. With a four-year business degree from Gardner-Webb University, and several years’ experience traveling around the country in sales and marketing for Rockport Shoes, she felt she was ready to move out on her own. Amanda opened Molly Malone’s Boutique in Hickory in 2005, and three years later she opened her second Molly Malone’s in Mooresville on Highway 150. Amanda’s mom, Merilee Gwaltney, started working at Molly Malone’s about five years ago. She says, “Amanda is a top14

notch business woman, very motivated with lots of energy and an eye for style and fashion.” Merilee helps with sales, but her most valuable role at the store is keeping up with Amanda’s beautiful three year-old daughter, Paisley Amelia Rogers. Paisley has a good chance of becoming a creative business force, herself, as she spends plenty of time helping mom and grandmom run the shop. “She loves dressing up, showing off an armful of bangles and modeling her cute outfits,” Merilee says with a smile. “She’s a lot like her mother; she’s a joy to watch!” GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS It’s Christmas shopping season, and for the girls and women in your life you won’t find a better selection of perfect gifts than at Molly Malone’s Boutique. Bonn Bons by Lori Bonn’s, beautiful sterling filigree charms centered with colorful gemstones are a perfect choice for sisters, moms and girlfriends alike. TrollBeads bracelets are universal and can be

threaded with any beads you choose. Molly Malone’s carries a huge selection of the Brighton line, with its signature silvery style of handbags, belts, wallets, sunglasses and of course, jewelry. “Whenever Brighton runs a promotion, we participate, so you’ll find high quality accessories at great prices,” says Karen Francis, store manager. “We’re Hickory’s only Brighton dealer, and the same is true for Bonn Bons and TrollBeads.” From Waxing Poetic’s sterling antique-look charm necklaces to contemporary, glittery jelly watches, with just about every style in between, the jewelry selection at Molly Malone’s will keep you occupied for hours just trying things on! Big Buddha handbags fill the store. They are stylish and unique–top quality, very affordable bags to match any look. Fill that bag with a Pouchee purse organizer, a great gift for busy women. There are choices for girls, too, like Charm It! themed jewelry to suit little soccer players, cowgirls and young rockers–stocking stuffers all young ones will love. Select personalized

monogrammed items and car decals for special friends. And the list goes on! THE PERFECT BOUTIQUE FOR ALL Husbands, boyfriends and dads will need help, and Amanda’s sales team is there for them! Jessica Picciano, district manager, works in both Molly Malone’s stores making sure that each shopper is met with impeccable customer service. “We can help anyone find exactly what they are looking for,” she says. “We offer personal shopping service, wedding consultations, gift wrapping, gift certificates, and gift wish lists. Our holiday open house is coming up, and I invite everyone to visit. You should really experience Molly Malone’s up close and personal.” You can follow Molly Malone’s on Facebook and shop online at www.mollymalonesboutique.com. You’re in smart company when you shop at Molly Malone’s. Style, service, selection–power shopping for all occasions, from gift giving to creating your own head-to-toe, fashionably unique look, all affordable, fun and totally today. I’ll start my Christmas shopping

at Molly Malone’s and I’m watching Amanda to make her next mark in the fashion world–there are plans in the works for more stores, which means more fun for more women! She has just what it takes to please the consummate shopper in each of us!

by Yasmina Reza Translated by Christopher Hampton

Michael and Veronica invite Alan and Annette over to talk about a playground fight between their two sons. Civility crumbles and the grown ups behave badly as these parents argue over who is at fault. Carnage erupts with name-calling, finger-pointing, stomping and carrying on. This is a wonderfully dark comedy that is recommended for adult audiences only.
