Show those legs with Confidence Do you limit your wardrobe to garments that cover bulging and discolored veins? Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores?

Dr. Thompson with The Center For Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins PERMANENTLY! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease. Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.

Procedures are performed in-office, with no downtime.

Treatments are covered by private insurance and Medicare. No Referrals Needed.

Welcome to the July issue. There’s not much I can say about July Fourth that hasn’t already been said. It is certainly one of our most important holidays as this nation celebrates the anniversary of our independence. This independence came with great sacrifice and struggle as our forefathers endured numerous hardships in those early days, yet built the foundation for a democracy that has lasted for over two centuries. July is typically our hottest month of the year with temperatures climbing into the 90s on most days. If you’re going to be outdoors either working or playing in this heat, remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, wear loose fitting clothing, take frequent breaks, and wear sun screen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Also, if possible, try to go inside where there is air conditioning to cool off for a few minutes every couple of hours.

Happy July! By Kathy Wheeler

July is filled with loads of summer fun, beginning with the Fourth of July festivities and fireworks. Most will gather with friends and family for cookouts, music, and end the day viewing a spectacular show of fireworks. With all the beautiful lakes in our area, I can say from experience that being on a boat watching the sky light up, while reflecting on the water, is absolutely beautiful! A trip to the many scenic lookouts on the Blue Ridge Parkway can offer a different viewpoint of fireworks in the cities below and is just as amazing! In Hickory, the place to be is L.P. Frans Stadium for their Independence Day Celebration. The Crawdads will play Kannapolis starting at 7:00 p.m. and their largest fireworks show of the year will follow. July is the most popular month for vacations. Having traveled throughout most of the United States and a few countries, I can truthfully say that North Carolina is one of the most beautiful locations. North Carolinians don’t have to leave the state to find a wonderful vacation spot. The vegetation is in full bloom and the weather is hot. Any location near water, or that offers relief from the heat, seems to be a huge attraction. It’s a busy time for tourism in the cooler mountain regions with many hiking trails, streams, and waterfalls. There are 59 lakes in our state that are perfect for boating, water skiing, and fishing, and just a short drive to the coast will land you an ocean 8

breeze and sand between your toes. Take some time this month to visit and enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife that our state offers. Speaking of the summer heat, make certain you and your family stay hydrated. If you have outdoor pets, ensure they have access to an unlimited water supply and shade. Extra water will be needed for your plants. It is best for you and the plants to water them in the morning when it is cooler. A layer of mulch can help prevent the soil from drying out. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and light protec-

tive clothing can help avoid sunburn. Spend time outdoors safely! As we celebrate the birth of our nation this month, let us not forget those who have fought for our independence and those who have given their lives to preserve our rights and protect our freedom. It is our responsibility to teach the generations who follow that it is a true privilege to live in the United States of America and to respect and honor those who serve to keep us safe. We at Hickory Living Magazine wish everyone a happy and safe July!

“We built our dream home in Rock Barn,” Colleen Witmer told me when I asked about her move to the country club four years ago, “and I can’t tell you enough about Rock Barn in just a few minutes. I put my play clothes on every day! We play tennis and golf and enjoy all the member activities. Our family, still living up north, says our place is the best vacation spot ever. They love to come visit with the kids. I love it.” Colleen and Bill Witmer are active, outdoor people. Philadelphia was home for over 30 years, but snow and power outages were common. After a serious search, they decided to build in Rock Barn Country Club where moderate weather and many amenities suit their lifestyle. “This is a little piece of heaven for us,” Colleen continued, “You can do as much or as little as you want. This is the best decision we’ve made!” BEST KEPT SECRET AROUND Rock Barn has been called “The best kept secret in the foothills,” and there are many reasons why. Say “country club” and most think about golf, but Rock Barn is so much more. Playing 36 holes of award-winning golf at two top-ranked courses is one of Rock Barn’s biggest draws. The challenging Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Championship Golf Course is a five-star rated course in Golf Digest and site of the Rock Barn Folds of Honor Signature Golf Tournament this Labor Day weekend. The Tom Jackson Championship Golf Course, a historic 50-year anniversary course nestled in rolling countryside with a distant mountain backdrop, has served four generations of golfers. A drive through the 1,500-acre gated community, just a mile

or so north of I-40 in Conover, reveals over 400 single-family homes and townhomes that elegantly line the two courses. Rock Barn boasts an eight-court tennis complex, fitness and aquatics centers, an equestrian center with pastures and riding trails, an elegant clubhouse and event center with state of the art AV systems, and a variety of casual and fine dining restaurants. The 20,000-square foot, world-class European day spa is a destination unto itself with half- and full-day packages and à la carte services available to everyone. Rock Barn Country Club and Spa is unsurpassed in elegance, service, amenities, and accommodations. CREATING A VISION For the past year, Rock Barn management has worked to transform the

community’s vision. Rock Barn Country Club went private a year ago and has focused on the value and privileges of club membership. Owners Don and Vickie Beaver have invested in ongoing capital projects to enhance the club’s numerous amenities. Spa renovations, pool upgrades, expanded golf course budgets, and added infrastructure with additional home sites on the Jones course are some of the recent improvements. Overseeing this vision is Brad Ellinger, vice president of Rock Barn Properties, Inc. and general manager for the Club. Brad explains, “Over the past year, we have enhanced our culture by focusing on creating a complete lifestyle for our members. Over fifty-five new members have joined since February, many driving from up to forty miles away to enjoy this exceptional gated community.” In-

vestments in the facilities coincide with investments in staff. Over 220 employees enjoy new educational opportunities, recognition programs, college internships, and enhanced benefits. EVENTS, PARTIES, MEETINGS In the greater Hickory/Charlotte area, Rock Barn Country Club and Spa’s event facilities are unsurpassed. Flame Deal, events director, oversees a professional staff whose mission is to make your special occasion, meeting, or corporate retreat one to remember. “We’re creative and very attentive to each event’s unique requirements,” Flame said. “At a wedding reception for 300 or a corporate board meeting for a handful, guests are treated with the same impeccable service.” The clubhouse, ballrooms, outdoor terrace, patio, and lawn all set

the stage for socializing, fun, and relaxation. A visit with Flame to start planning your next event is certainly in order. LIVE WHERE YOU PLAY Residents like Bill and Colleen Witmer, who purchase or build a home in the Rock Barn community, have the best of all possible worlds. “There are only so many hours in the day, but so much to enjoy,” Colleen shared. “We decided to build in Rock Barn because of the added value here, all there is to do, and the peaceful setting.” Now is a perfect time to explore what’s available in Rock Barn, when summer activities are in full swing, and a tour reveals not only the beautiful homes and lots, but also the active lifestyle. “When I decided to work for Rock Barn in their on-site realty office, we had a choice—do we want to live there, too?” Dan Friess recalled. Dan is director of realty sales and membership. “It was a no-brainer. We have three kids and the opportunities for them are incredible. My seven-year-old is getting better at golf and tennis each day, and my eleven-year-old can’t wait to continue horseback riding lessons. After a fun-filled day, it’s easy to go over to the club for dinner and catch up on everyone’s adventures.” Dan shared that homeowners in Rock Barn are typically younger families with children, empty nesters, and singles. In all cases, easy access to Charlotte in one direction and the mountains in the other makes this community ideal for anyone. “Our two newest neighborhoods are Walnut Ridge and The Laurels,” Dan said. “We have 105 new home sites, and we’re excited to be working with Jeff Keever and Stan Whittington, both local custom home builders.” Lots in Walnut Ridge feature spectacular views of the mountains, and soon, a park and walking trail. After recent redesign, The Laurels development of maintenance-free townhomes now offers 25 lots on the Jones Golf Course. Rock Barn’s full-service realty office is where your dream home can begin. Their simplified design-build process makes the building experience as simple and straightforward as pos-

sible. From design and construction to finishing touches, Dan can guide you to ensure that your vision, ideas, and goals are incorporated into your dream home. Dan is available to give you an in-depth tour while introducing you to friendly staff, neighbors, and future friends for life. New residents, Shane and Marcia Lynch, have been members for years. “We’re very active at Rock Barn—tennis, golf, fitness, at the Spa, socializing at the Club. It made sense for us to live in the community and not have to drive back and forth. Last year we decided to begin the journey of selling our home and buying in Rock Barn,” Marcia told me. “Since moving in, we realized we are truly part of a community here. We’re meeting new people all the time and feel very welcomed and at home.” BE A PART OF THE LIFESTYLE Rock Barn Country Club & Spa is everything you desire to live the lifestyle you’ve been searching for. Explore Rock Barn: relax with a girls’ day at the spa, a romantic weekend at the Stay and Play townhomes, have dinner and drinks with friends, hang out at the pool, or get the guys together for a full day of golf. Take a drive to the foothills, and experience this well-kept secret just waiting to be discovered.

Budget Blinds offers full service window treatment solutions for your home or business. They provide anything related to windows including blinds, shades, shutters, drapes, valances, cornices, and window film. Scott and Cori Peters opened the Statesville and Hickory franchise in 2013. They opened a showroom in Statesville last year. “We have a showroom in Statesville, but we also heavily service the Hickory area with our mobile showroom,” Cori said. “We still come to customers with our mobile showroom because that’s really the best way to get the right product for your home or business, but our showroom just gives customers another way to see our 18

variety of products before starting the buying process.” They plan to open a showroom in Hickory in the next year for people who prefer to come to a store to start the searching process. Cori and Scott are local to the community and run the franchise like a family business. “We have the advantages of being a part of the world’s largest window treatment franchise, and we can still run our shop like a mom and pop company with personal service,” Cori said. Taking care of customers starts at the beginning with a free in-home consul-

tation. During this time, they discuss product options that best fit the needs and style of the windows, professionally measure the windows, and provide a free estimate. The Budget Blinds team sees you through the entire process all the way to the professional installation. The in-home session is so beneficial for customers. How many times have you tried to pick out something for your home while in a store and struggled to determine if it will match or fit. While shopping for your home in your home, you can see how the sunlight works with a product or exactly how the color fits with the room. Cori’s 23-years of design experience gives her the expertise to guide customers.

Budget Blinds can show you unique products you won’t find anywhere else. “Because we are part of a large company, we have a huge selection of exclusive products,” Cori said. “Many manufacturers launch products with us.” They carry products that are kid friendly, energy efficient, and eco-friendly. They have graphic shades and motorized products for hard to reach windows. They can offer solutions for challenging windows, whether the window has an odd shape or you need an outdoor solution. All products have a lifetime warranty on craftsmanship and defects. Most of them come with a five-year warranty against accidents. “So, if the dog chews them or your kids break them, no worries, we will replace them,” Cori said. “No one else provides this type of service. We have the best warranty in the business.”

ment solutions for homes and businesses. They have completed commercial projects in restaurants, hospitals, offices, hospitality, condos, government buildings, retail locations, and more. They work directly with builders, contractors, service and maintenance agents, real estate agents, and interior designers to offer the same quality and value. With over 1,000 franchises in the United States, Cori and Scott are connected to an incredible network to ensure their success. The Outer Banks

Old World Charm and Modern Structures By Linda B. Wilson

© | digidreamgrafix

It is hard to believe now while you sit in traffic on highway 12 to get through Duck, that until the mid 1900s this road was just a sandy path and this region was undiscovered by tourists. The only visitors were fisherman and hunters and the few residents who lived here year round. The narrow but scenic 142 mile highway running from north to south connecting one quaint old world charm village to the next still exists, but now with modern structures and conveniences mixed in on a paved road. There are still an abundance of light houses to climb, history to relive, and unspoiled beaches to explore. Corolla is located on the northern end of the outer banks. In 1895 it was given the name which refers to the petals of a flower. It is known for the Spanish Mustangs roaming freely on the 12,000 acre sanctuary. Nestled between the ocean and the Currituck sound, the land was developed on Indian hunting grounds. Early settlers fished, hunted 26

and salvaged what they could from shipwrecks. It is a picture perfect little village, but the Currituck light house and the wild horse tours are the main draw to Corolla. Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk are the most populous towns of the outer banks, and Kitty Hawk is the site of the first aircraft flight. Jockey’s Ridge is the east coast’s highest sand dune and provides a fantastic view of the Atlantic ocean. In the late 1800s, the Wright brothers searched and finally found a location that met their criteria for winds, wide open space, and sandy dunes in a non-populated area. That location happened to be on the outer banks of North Carolina. After four years of researching, experimenting and struggling, the brothers realized their dream on December 17, 1903. Now the public can view the spot where history was made 114 years ago. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, built in 1870, is one of the most recognizable in

the world. Its light beam spans 20 miles out into the Atlantic and it is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America at 208 feet and 257 steps. In 1999 it was moved one-half mile inland to protect it from the encroaching Atlantic Ocean; the move took 23 days and was the tallest structure ever to be moved. Ocracoke is accessible only by ferry, plane or boat, but very much worth the trouble. This perfect little island is just a little more than a square mile but has 16 miles of undeveloped beach. Cottages dating back to the 1800s are scattered beneath live oaks mixed in with unique shops and restaurants. It is a step back in history. If it is reeling in the big one, kite surfing, or breathing in a little history, the outer banks of North Carolina has so much to offer for every family member. Take a week, or take two, to enjoy all there is to do there.

Marketing To

Millennials By Lauren Davidson

Is your business aptly marketing to the latest generation of consumers? According to Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research, “The Millennial generation is the largest in US history, and as they reach their prime working and spending years, their impact on the economy is going to be huge.” Although Millennials make up a large portion of today’s consumers, not every business correctly markets themselves to America’s latest generation of shoppers. In order to appeal to Millennials, it’s important to understand what makes them unique. Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research reported: “Millennials have come of age during a time of technological change, globalization, and economic disruption. That’s given them a different set of behaviors and experiences than their parents.” This tech savviness has presented a hardship for small businesses who feel like they have to compete with tech giants like eBay and Amazon. For instance, 57% of Millennials compare prices in store, according to AIMIA Inc.’s

“Born this Way: US Millennial Loyalty Survey.” To combat this, small businesses must offer a unique product that isn’t easily accessible online. Many retailers have turned to highlighting local craftspeople and artisans, a trend that helps both the community and the retailer. Unsurprisingly, it’s also important to have a strong social media presence. Facebook, Yelp, and Google reviews are an easy way to promote your business—and they’re free. I recently visited a salon that offered $5 off my next visit in exchange for a review. This is an innovative way to multiply the number and quality of reviews left for your business. It’s important to note that even if your business isn’t within the retail space, it’s still important to have a social media presence. Otherwise, Millennials may not trust the validity of your business. If someone were to leave a bad review about your business, it would be worthwhile to respond to it graciously, showing good character. Although reviews are important, studies have shown that Millennials also value

constant communication, and as they continue to gravitate more towards “disappearing media” like Snapchat and Instagram stories, it’s important that your business stay on trend in order to keep up with the targeted Millennial consumer. For instance, many stores, brands, and restaurants partner with local “style influencers” to have their business featured on their Instagram feeds. With shop-happy apps like LiketoKnowIt, the consumer can easily purchase items directly from an Instagram picture. It’s foolish not to utilize these free tools to promote your business. If you’re unfamiliar with how to best utilize these tools, hire a college intern. They’re likely to be familiar with your audience, and internships are currently trumping summer jobs in popularity. Since the Millennial generation is the largest in U.S. history, small businesses must speak their language to appeal to them, thinking in terms of “likes” and how best to translate them into profit.
