Show those legs WithConfidence Do you limit your wardrobe to garments that cover bulging and discolored veins? Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores?

Dr. Thompson with The Center for Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins permanently! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease. Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.

Procedures are performed in-office, with no downtime.

Treatments are covered by private insurance and Medicare. No Referrals Needed. Patients may be responsible for copays and/or deductibles.

When I was growing up, my family visited Myrtle Beach for our summer vacation. I would so look forward to spending the week there, usually the week after July Fourth. The pool at the hotel was great, but I always wanted to go to the beach, feel the warm ocean water as it ran across my feet, and the sunshine and wind on my face. I have so many fond memories of the Grand Strand area from my youth!

August is the month to enjoy the remainder of summer vacation and prepare for another school year. From small children starting their first year of kindergarten to young adults going away to their first year of college, those firsts can be intimidating and a little scary for both parents and children. I was a stay at home mom and remember my oldest son’s first day of kindergarten. I left him screaming, “Don’t leave me here!” I tried to prepare him by taking him to half-day play schools and didn’t think about preparing myself for that day. I cried all the way home, sad that I wouldn’t see him all day, wondering how he would cope, and realizing that it was an end to an era. Luckily, his teacher and I were friends. She called me mid-morning to let me know he was doing just fine, and his tears stopped within a few minutes of my leaving him. Bless her! Likewise, when it was time for him to go to college, I was to meet him for orientation that morning, as he had spent the previous night with some friends on campus. I was so excited for my son. I 8

was standing at a second story window watching for his arrival. As soon as I saw him, I got tears in my eyes. He looked so young and naive and all grown up at the same time. I began to grieve the end of another era. I’m embarrassed to say that I cried through the whole orientation, to the point that he looked at me and asked if I was going to be okay. Too funny! Again, he was fine—I wasn’t! These milestones can be tough on parents. We know how to prepare our children, yet we forget about how it may affect us. Even though my heart swells with pride with each milestone my children cross, I can’t help feeling a little sadness that it means they need me less. I guess we have done our job if we become obsolete. As they ease into their freedom, we regain ours. We’ve worked hard to earn the title of parent; we don’t lose that when they go off to college. Our role just changes. I remember calling my son’s cell and waiting for three days for a return call. He was busy, but I was freaking out. A friend of mine laughed and said, “So you

haven’t heard from him in three whole days! Jeez!” He was being facetious. I was clueless, looking at him like, “What?” Obviously, I had to learn to back off, give my son his freedom, and talk to him on his terms. He was growing up but still needed an occasional sounding board and my help. So, I wasn’t obsolete yet. Young adults will struggle with their newfound freedom and will make mistakes. Let them, and be there to support them through their struggles. The first year of college is an adjustment for both students and parents. Text messages can work well if you need to take care of business. If you just want to hear their voice, text, and ask them to call you when they have a chance. Respect their privacy and their schedule. As hard as it is to let go, they will learn some valuable lessons, if you let them. Only step in when necessary. It will take a little time for both of you to adjust. Usually, after they drag all their laundry and belongings in during their first summer break, you will be ready to send them back.

Meet Dr. William Geideman Foot and Ankle Surgeon at OrthoCarolina Hickory

This California native now calls NC home! After undergrad in CA, he made his way to St. Louis for medical school and his internship / residency. Following a fellowship in Dallas, TX he made his way to NC for good! He’s putting his training to work as a foot & ankle surgeon at OrthoCarolina. He describes working at OrthoCarolina Hickory as “a world class group of physicians with outstanding knowledge and training, and an organizational commitment to lowering the cost of health care while improving outcomes.”

Surgery should be your last resort. Better to have tried and failed conservative treatment than to have never tried it and regret not having done it later.

When not in the office, you’ll probably find him on the tennis court. In fact, did you know he set a Guinness record for longest doubles tennis marathon? At 50hrs this record held for 2 ½ yrs! Dr. Geideman and his wife Bridget, along with their three children Brendan, Spenser, and Ava, are proud to call Hickory home!

Creating Your Scenic View By Kristie Darling | Photos by Shane Greene Photography

When it comes to our homes, that haven where we spend precious time with family and friends, the environment should be beautiful, peaceful, and in alignment with our lifestyle. We visualize a lovely yard and gardens, but we don’t know where to begin. Our outdoor living space doesn’t look like our dream property. I have discovered the best place to start—Scenic View Landscapes. Making an appointment is easy, and consultation in Kevin Sipe’s design office will get your dream of a beautifully landscaped home from drawing board to lawn party, patio dining, peaceful hideaway, or scenic view in short order. You don’t have to know how to begin; Kevin will help you make it happen. 12

CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPING “I believe what sets us apart is personal attention to our clients’ desires,” owner and designer Kevin Sipe says. “I start by listening to people’s ideas—that vision they have in their mind’s eye. I can share pictures, videos, and drawings, but first I want a clear understanding of their lifestyle. Then, when I introduce my team leaders to our client and their property and explain in detail what’s to be done, I know my team will get it right.” Kevin’s attention to detail in all aspects of running Scenic View Landscapes is in alignment with his mission: ...excellence in creative design innovation, professional integrity, and quality business practices that exceed client expectations. Kevin is a people person by nature, a man of integrity and leadership. You see that immediately when you visit Scenic View—drive by one day to enjoy his office entrance in full bloom! “We keep everything in order—clean and ready to roll,” Kevin explained. “My employees are shirt-tucked-in workers; polite, respectful, fully vetted and qualified people. I have confidence in their knowledge and trustworthiness. I’m proud to have them on the team. Many have been with me for quite some time. To ensure no downtime, our equipment and vehicles are maintained weekly by on-site mechanics, and our reputation for exceptional customer service is second to none.” I was impressed with Kevin’s high standards of operation, a critical expectation when doing custom-designed residential landscaping. His customer evaluations confirm this, with comments like, “We’re extremely pleased with Scenic View Landscape’s design, installation, and maintenance. They are professional and courteous and perform their tasks with meticulous detail and cleanup. Our landscape has beautiful color in all seasons making it a joy to entertain guests.” BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR LIVING Your landscape design is a first impression for visitors and neighbors. It should be a pleasure for you, too. Reflecting the way you like to live, your yard says a lot. Scenic View Landscapes can design, install, and if desired, maintain features surrounding your home—beautiful yards, flower gardens and arbors, patios, fireplaces, outdoor rooms for entertaining, relaxing water features, walkways, and even container plantings that Kevin has created. “With my clients’ guidance, I design outdoor spaces that reflect their personal tastes and our creative vision, resulting in a scenic view they can enjoy for years to come.”

Garden designs can express many styles and preferences. With a degree in Landscape Horticulture from North Carolina State University and 17 years’ building Catawba County’s leading landscape team as a professional designer, Kevin’s skills include asking clients the important questions. Will there be an informal lawn beside the pool for parties? A patio with an outdoor kitchen or a peaceful waterfall? Love gathering bouquets of cut flowers for indoors or dream of a shady spot for your hammock? How much time does your family spend dining, playing, or strolling outdoors? Your landscape might need a complete make-over, a new feature, or re-thinking certain areas. Kevin can share with you all options and solutions to suit your setting. Experts in their field, Kevin’s teams work together to keep their clients’ properties beautiful, healthy, and seasonal, especially when homeowners don’t have the skills, time, or inclination. “We don’t just come in twice a year and trim everything. There are certain horticultural windows when different plants require specific attention. Our work calendar aligns with those times of the year, and our plants look better and grow better this way. We schedule service based on client needs. For instance, if we know an outdoor event is planned in mid-June, we’ll adjust maintenance, add services that might be required, and make note to be done in plenty of time for the festivities,” Kevin said. “We can do everything that’s needed or just what you want us to manage. You might like a low-maintenance yard that you would enjoy working in. Either way, Scenic View is happy to partner with our clients to create a beautiful yard.”

PROFESSIONAL, SKILLED TEAMS “Our team members believe that if one wins, we all win,” Kevin explained. “I require the best from everyone, and I always get more than I expect!” His specialized teams are continually trained and certified in best landscaping practices. They know their plants. Throughout the seasons, they inspect plants for insects or fungal problems, and nip those in the bud. Customer service is key and includes phoning clients in advance and following up, whether it’s an extensive new landscape plan or seasonal trimming and clean-up. Morning and end-of-day team huddles keep everyone on the same page. “It’s important to start and finish up well, and we always make good anything that needs additional attention,” Kevin said.

• Meet Debbie Sipe, office manager • Scenic View mechanic Duane Sipe services equipment at their shop location. 14

Installing hardscaping from Kevin’s blueprints can be an extensive undertaking, and each team involved in construction focuses on exceptional workmanship, on-time schedules,

attention to details, and a positive customer relationship. This means making sure the family is not inconvenienced, the workspace is kept in order, and cleanup is complete. Stonework, driveways, patios, fireplaces, walkways, dry stream beds, water features like waterfalls, fountains, and ponds for fish or aquatic plants, and pools highlight the plantings around a home. Kevin can design an outdoor lighting plan to capture the full beauty of a home’s surroundings. IT’S ABOUT HOME AND FAMILY Kevin Sipe is a family man. “I realize we’ve been blessed in this business, and I want everyone who works here to feel the same,” he shared. “We help team members set goals and celebrate their growth. We truly care about our team members and are thankful for them.” Kevin and his wife, Erin, have two daughters. Kara is 15, and she loves reading, writing, and dancing. Thirteen-year-old Anna has a passion for woodworking and is on the volleyball team. Erin Sipe is a middle and high school English enrichment teacher working with home schoolers at The Front Porch Place. She is currently fighting her second cancer battle, metastatic breast cancer. Kevin and his family find their own yard to be their personal escape from the outside world—a place where they love to make memories together with family and friends. The Sipes have a rescued beagle named Ginger and several well-loved Jeeps. “We want to be the go-to company for creating a spectacular new setting for your home, to preparing for a garden wedding, to taking care of your property when you’re out of town, or prepping for the For Sale sign to go up,” Kevin said. “We continually work hard to maintain our reputation for the highest level of customer service and dedication to quality. It’s sometimes the little things that set us apart, and I continually strive to make improvements and keep things running smoothly for everyone,” Kevin commented. I suggest connecting with Kevin to discover how his team can enhance the beauty and enjoyment of your home. Kevin offered, “At the end of the day, if Scenic View can enhance the life of your family by creating an environment to make memories with those you love, then we’ve done our job well.”

A Unique System for Developing Musculoskeletal Strength By Meredith Collins

When biomedical engineer John Jaquish, Ph.D., found out his mother was diagnosed with osteoporosis in her 70s, he began researching ways to improve skeletal strength. He learned about Wolff’s law, developed by the German anatomist and surgeon, Julius Wolff, that states bone in a healthy person will adapt to the loads under which it is placed. Simply put, when you apply pressure to a bone, it becomes stronger. So, how can you safely apply pressure, he wondered? And, what amount of pressure is enough to help? Jaquish developed a device using osteogenic triggering to target four areas in the body to strengthen bones. It was extremely successful with his mother, and Jaquish co-founded OsteoStrong to help others experience the same benefit. 18

When Kindal McAuliffe learned about OsteoStrong, her background as an x-ray technologist and her work in orthopedics gave her the medical and scientific knowledge to understand the technology. Along with her husband and father-inlaw, she will open a Hickory OsteoStrong location in August. “As soon as I learned about it, I was sold,” Kindal said. “The whole idea made sense to me. I am super excited about bringing this to the Hickory area. It’s innovative and doesn’t involve any chemicals or medication.” What exactly is OsteoStrong? “OsteoStrong is not a gym, diet, supplement, pharmaceutical, or medical treatment,” their website states. “OsteoStrong is a unique place where you can go to improve your overall health by focusing on the one thing we all have in common: a

musculoskeletal system.” The system helps clients of all ages relieve pain and prevent future injuries with quick sevenminute to ten-minute sessions once a week. Clients can be comfortable in work-out clothes or their work clothes for this no-sweat session. A study done in 2012 looked into what force impact is required to see bone density growth. “They determined you have to be able to put 4.2 times your body weight to promote bone density,” Kindal said. “It all makes sense to me from a medical standpoint. You have to work your whole musculoskeletal system to increase balance and strength. Our system allows you to safely apply force to your body; it’s high-impact without the risk.” Four machines target different areas of the body for growth trigger events. “The machines are static,” Kindal said. “There is no repetition, like at a gym. You are only against yourself. Each machine is set up to be adjusted to the person’s optimal position. A trained technician is with the client during the session, and he or she is in control the whole time. We are looking for five seconds of maximum effort. The screen shows feedback of what they are doing.” Before machines, you stand on a vibration plate for one to two minutes to loosen muscles and get the central nervous system going.

The system reverses osteoporosis and osteopenia. It increases strength and improves balance. OsteoStrong also helps conquer joint pain, back pain, and fibromyalgia. It can also help athletes build skeletal strength and break through some strength plateaus. “It’s a way to improve quality of life and feel better in a fun, relaxing environment” Kindal said. “There have been some incredible testimonials of results.” OsteoStrong 930 Hwy 70 SW, Suite 103, Hickory 828-270-0918 Facebook – “OsteoStrong Hickory”

What's Cooking?! Protein-Rich Breakfast

As schedules get hectic, it is essential to start each day with a protein-rich breakfast. Consider these prepare ahead, grab and go, recipes to help with those busy mornings.

Other Ways To Add Protein

Muffin and bread recipes can be rich in protein. Keep in mind that white flour has protein, but the more protein, the more gluten. So if you are trying to avoid gluten, look at the nut flours or coconut flour. Non-gluten flours will not rise unless you add 1/8 of teaspoon of backing soda and baking powder per 1/4 cup of flour. Walnuts are high in protein and a great addition to any muffin. You can also replace 1/3 of your flour with protein powder. HICKORY LIVING • AUGUST 2017

As local manufacturer Corning prepares for the future, they are poised to bring growth and opportunity to the region. “This is an exciting time for Corning,” says Rob France, senior vice president of human resources for Corning Optical Communications. “We are seeing increasing demand for our products across the globe, and we’re stepping up production to meet that demand. That is good news for North Carolina, which already houses two of the world’s largest optical fiber facilities and two of the world’s largest optical cable facilities.” New York-based Corning Incorporated employs approximately 40,000 people worldwide. More than 3,000 of those employees are located at five sites across North Carolina supporting the Optical Communications business that produces optical fiber and hardware solutions. But recent expansion announcements indicate that number will soon grow. Corning will add 200 jobs through an expansion in Cabarrus County, and at least 210 jobs will be created with the establishment of a new optical cable manufacturing facility in Newton. In addition, more than 100 jobs will be added at locations in both Hickory and Winston-Salem. “We are extremely happy to expand our presence across the region,” said France. “Hickory and the surrounding areas are integral to our 46-year history in North Carolina, and they will remain so as we look ahead.”

Choose To Have A

Positive Attitude By Lauren Davidson

© | ulkas

The CFO of my company has a message written on his whiteboard that I think we could all benefit from. It reads: Benefits of a Positive Attitude: 1. Other people genuinely like to be around you; it’s contagious 2. Increased life span 3. Lower rate of depression 4. Lower level of distress 5. Greater resistance to the common cold 6. Better psychological and physical well-being 7. Reduced risk of death from heart disease 8. Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress Apparently, after encountering a week that seemed to be doused in negativity, the CFO looked up the benefits of a positive attitude on the Mayo Clinic website to motivate his employees. It’s a good reminder that not only does a positive attitude affect interactions with others, it

also affects your own well-being. Have you noticed that when something negative happens, it can gain momentum, and your whole day, week, or year has been a series of difficult events? I’d like to argue that if you focus on it, the same thing can happen with positivity. When it feels like life keeps throwing curveballs or you’re just getting bored with the monotony, it’s important to coax—or snap—yourself out of it. It’s easy to fall into a routine of negativity, and it happens to all of us. The most important thing you can do is to recognize it. Sometimes, I’ll tell myself, “Today, I’m going to have a really good day,” and I try to stick with it. Don’t forget that you are in charge of your destiny. If you actively decide to be positive—again and again, hour after hour, curveball after curveball—you will find that your general outlook on life starts to look up. You are in control of your emotions, not the other way around. If life feels unfair, rise above it and keep living. Each day,

hour, and minute is an opportunity to be happy and to do something you enjoy. Try putting your own happiness first, not at the expense of others, of course, but just try it. Say to yourself, “Is this serving me?” and react accordingly. You’ll quickly assess the things that provide joy and those that do not. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the brevity of our time here, and I think that we so often fall into a routine of not being appreciative and joyful about every day that we spend alive. Living in a monotonous blur is no way to spend your time. My advice is to try, starting tomorrow, with a determined mission to be positive. See what happens. If you don’t find purpose within your day, think about making some changes. At some point, I think we all need to take a look around and evaluate where we are and where we want to go. As Ferris Beuller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
