The Trap of Goal Setting Why do some people who really desire success and work tirelessly fail to achieve it? Why is it that sometimes in spite of careful planning and vigorous efforts things still don't happen? Sometimes it seems like people who are very clear about what they want and have very clearly outlined goals still fail to achieve worthwhile success. This in turn leads to frustration, which causes a cycle of defeat that ends up doing a lot of damage to their enthusiasm and belief in themselves. There have been many people who have tried and followed good advice on goal setting and achieving their dreams and have only ended up disappointed because, although they did everything they were told to do but they did not get the results they expected to get. Many people have read lots of books on how to succeed, how to make money, how to set and achieve goals and a dozen other promising titles. In spite of this, progress seems to be very slow if at all. What is missing? What are they doing wrong? One possible answer is that they would be spending too much time on goal setting and goal checklists. Dr. John Elliot, author of “When Goals Fall Flat!” wrote about a man who was very successful outwardly, earning millions of dollars, but he was neither happy nor satisfied with his life as a top salesman. He said of the man “As we talked at greater length, I discovered that Henry had fallen into the trap of relying on goal setting to navigate his career and define his success to define him.” He says he has seen many cases of such people who “get caught up creating and checking off to-do lists for all of their personal and professional responsibilities.” Whilst such people often are rewarded greatly for their efforts, it is often at the great expense of lost time with their families and lost time for themselves. Most of all, these people do not feel fulfilled with their lives. They are held captive by the perfectionism of goal setting. There is clearly a danger in being too meticulous and planning everything to the last detail. I remember meeting a colleague one evening who told me that he enjoys reading the articles I write, but he felt that they were always so serious and made it seem like life had to always be so well planned and thought out. To him, they took the fun out of life. I told him that wasn't the idea and that I totally agreed that life should not be an affair totally full of goals, study and all with no spontaneity. There has to be room for fun, spontaneity and the unexpected to happen. It is for these reasons that I shun books or programs that have page after page of goal setting exercises and daily checklists and benchmarks. It is like the 200 page “how to study for an exam” books that I often came across whilst studying. If you spend your time reading such a book and mastering what it says, when are you going to have the time to study? It is the same with goals. If you spend all your time writing, analysing and perfecting goals and ticking checklists, when are you going to have the time to actually achieve anything?

RTI reveals coaching classes boom in Gujarat without checks VADODARA: While numerous tuition and coaching classes charging prohibitive tuition fees from desperate parents are mushrooming across the state, Gujarat government has not bothered to put any checks, or demand accountability from these commercial ventures. This has came to light in replies to RTI applications made by city-based activists, Rohit Prajapati and Turpti Shah. "Although, states like Goa and Bihar have

taken steps to place a modicum of governing system in place, Gujarat's education department has indicated they do not monitor the functioning of the private coaching and tuition classes. The state government seems to encourage the sector of education as an unfettered, unmonitored industry," claimed Prajapati while addressing media here. Contending that "private coaching and tuition classes is a profit making industry with no capital investment, no risk, no running cost, no monitoring, no accountability, no

recession but only profit", the NGO alleged that government was withdrawing itself from the basic sector of education and consciously encouraging privatization and commercialization on the pretext of improving education. "When other industries and commercial ventures can have regulations and monitoring system by the government, why should this 'industry' be kept out," they queried. They asked 13 questions seeking information on, "under which act private coaching and tuition classes in Gujarat state were registered; their names, the owners' names, teachers' qualifications, fee charged and the number of students in each class; any notification or rules and regulation for monitoring these private classes; check on advertisements being issued by these coaching institutes; details of government offices monitoring these institutes; any surprise raids or checks on the institutes; etc., "We also sought copies of minutes of any education department meeting which may have discussed the issue of rise in the number of these private coaching institutes. The department replied that no such meeting had ever taken place. They refused to reply to queries on why monitoring was not being done or whether, any other department was monitoring. They said, they were supposed to provide information and not reply to queries," Prajapati said.

Delhi madrassas open to allow special training centres NEW DELHI: General education is welcome, as long as the regular madrassa schedule is not disturbed. The Universal Elementary Education Mission (UEE-Mission), may just find several such institutions submitting proposals for Special Training Centres meant to facilitate the mainstreaming of out-of-schools kids. A survey conducted through the Urdu Academy about two year ago, says Maulana Ata-urRehman, heading Shah Waliullah Institute, found that the city has about 250 madrassas, about four times as many maqtabas. Subjects other than the Quran, such as U r d u a n d Persian, are taught in madrassas; only Arabic Quran is taught at maqtabas. In the absence of a madrassa board in Delhi, the UEE-Mission (responsible for implementing Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) had to "treat the madrassas as NGOs" and seek proposals for centres from them. "Such initiatives will only benefit students," observes Mufti Mukarram, Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid. Within its walls runs one of the oldest madrassas in the city - the Madrassa-i-Alia - and the only one that's under the Waqf Board. "As long as there's no disturbance to the madrassa's curriculum and syllabus, it's a welcome move," he says. Study hours are short, 7.30 am to 12 or 12.30 pm, and there will be time for other activities. However, only about 20% of the students are within the age bracket covered by the scheme - six to 14. "There's no age bar here and students as old as 18 or 20 coming here also can be placed in the starting classes," he says.

"This in not exactly a new scheme," Mujtaba Farooq, executive member, All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, points out, "The government already has a " madrassa modernization scheme" which offers facilities such as English, Maths, Science and computerteaching to madrassas that opt for it. There is another scheme for vocational training. Plus, the image of madrassas - that they don't offer contemporary education - is a result of a communication gap. But people will welcome this and should." Even new madrassas may choose to join in. J a m i a Mahmood-ulMadaaris, a madrassalocate d in Masuri, near Ghaziabad, which has over 1,000 students enrolled with it. "Many of the students who come here are drop-outs from regular schools," explains founder Maulana Khalid, "Parents send them here thinking since their kids are not getting regular education, they may as well receive religious instruction and become better human beings. A centre imparting general education can only help us." Atyab Siddiqui, vice president, Delhi Education Society, is less optimistic. The hiccups, he feels, will be in the implementation especially considering the optional nature of the scheme. "I have a lurking suspicion that there won't be many institutions responding to this as it's not mandatory," he says. "Implementation can be a problem," he continues, "But our community needs a new thought process, inquisitiveness and a more scientific temperament."

Antique shawls to be FIFA to hear case over South Korea Olympic protest auctioned for animal hospital ZURICH: The case of the South Korean soccer player who inflamed a diplomatic row with

Japan by waving a political placard at the London Olympic soccer tournament will be heard again by FIFA's disciplinary committee. The committee, which has to decide whether Park Jong-woo will face suspension for his protest at the end of the bronze medal match against Japan, failed to reach a verdict when it previously

heard the case in October. A FIFA spokesman said that, even if a decision is reached on Tuesday, it would not be announced for several days as a full report has to be written and translated before the outcome can be made public. The midfielder held up a sign referring to a territorial dispute between South Korea and Japan while celebrating a 2-0 win over their fierce rivals Park was handed the sign, which read "Dokdo is our territory", by a fan but his actions prompted soccer's world governing body to open disciplinary proceedings against him. He was banned from the medal ceremony but the Korea Football Association (KFA) told the Yonhap news agency last month Park had been sent a certificate via the country's Olympic Committee confirming that he would receive his bronze.

MUMBAI: To raise funds for an animal hospital, an NGO will auction antique Jamavar shawls— over 100 years old— at Kala Ghoda's Royal Oak Banquets from 4pm to 8pm. "People F o r Animals ( P FA ) , led by activists Maneka Gandhi a n d Pritish Nandy, is hoping to raise funds to build a hospital for animals on the outskirts of Mumbai. These shawls have been donated for the auction by various animal lovers," s a i d P FA ' s A m b i k a

Hirandani. Well known designer Nisha Jamval said: "Such shawls are no longer made, so they are priceless. We have kept a base price of Rs 1 lakh per shawl for the auction at Joss." Reme mberi n g late Shiv Sena chief B a l Thac keray, who was an animal lover, Ambika said. "He always showed love and affection towards animals. We are saddened by his demise. The auction was supposed to be held, said Ambika.

Neanderthals may have sailed to Mediterranean islands A study has provided new evidence which suggests that Neanderthals, or even older Homo erectus ("Upright Man") might have sailed around the Mediterranean, stopping at islands such as Crete and Cyprus. The evidence indicted that these hominid species had cognitive skills to build boats and navigate them. "They had to have had boats of some sort; unlikely they swam," Discovery News quoted Alan Simmons, lead author of a study about the find, as writing in this week's Science. "Many of the islands had no landbridges, thus they must have had the cognitive ability to both build boats and know how to navigate them," he added. Simmons, a professor of anthropology at the University of Nevada, added that there is no direct evidence for boats dating back to over 100,000 years ago. If they were built then, the wood or other natural materials likely eroded. However, other clues hint that modern humans may not have been the first to set foot on Mediterranean islands. On Crete, for example, tools such as quartz hand-axes, picks and cleavers are associated with deposits that may date to 170,000 years ago. Excavations at an Akrotiri site on Cyprus have turned up ancient thumbnail scrapers and other tools dating to beyond 9,000 years ago. There is also a huge assembly of fossils for a dwarf pygmy hippopotamus, which might have been a good food for the earlier islanders. It's possible they hunted the small, plump animal to extinction. "Conventional wisdom used to be that none of these islands had too much settlement prior to the Neolithic because the islands were too impoverished to have supported permanent occupation. This likely is untrue. Hunters and gatherers can be pretty creative," Simmons said. Other evidence outside of the Mediterranean supports that preNeolithic humans could sail. Simmons, for instance, pointed out that these individuals "must have been able to cross substantial expanses of sea to reach Australia by at least 50,000 years ago." "Additionally," he continued, "findings from the Indonesian Wallacea islands suggest the presence of hominins as early as 1.1 million years ago on Flores Island." Thomas Strasser, an associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Providence College, told Discovery that he believes "future research will confirm recent discoveries that hominids reached the Mediterranean islands when they first left Africa. I believe the Homo erectus radiation out of Africa was both terrestrial and maritime."

White House celebrates Diwali Aamir Khan Turns To Real Cops with Indian−Americans For 'Talaash' Role Preparations WASHINGTON: The White House celebrated Diwali this year too with US Vice President Joe Biden lighting the traditional "diya" or the lamp as he joined a select group of Indian−American officials, community members and diplomats. President Barack Obama wished people

around the world "Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak" but unlike last year he did not himself join celebrations at the Eisenhower executive building of the White House this time. In 2009, Obama became the first US president to light the traditional lamp in the East Room of the White House. In 2010, he celebrated Diwali in Mumbai.

Diwali celebrations in the White House were started by former president George W. Bush, but he never personally participated in the celebrations, deputing senior administration officials to the function. At this year's celebrations, Biden spoke of the universal resonance of Diwali and asked guests to commit themselves to providing for those less fortunate. "In closing, the vice president expressed his wishes for a peaceful and prosperous Diwali and that the lights guide the guests safely home," wrote an official on the White House blog. At the conclusion of the ceremony, which was closed for the press, a priest from a local Hindu temple draped a blue shawl around Biden's shoulders as he lit the "diya". Attendees at this year's celebrations included Indian Ambassador Nirupama Rao, the first Hindu American to be elected to the US Congress Tulsi Gabbard, and California physician Ami Bera, who is narrowly leading in a still undecided close Congressional contest. USAID administrator Rajiv Shah and former White House Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra also attended.

Rahul Gandhi to head Congress 2014 poll panel NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi will head the s i x − m e m b e r C o n g r e s s coordination panel for the 2014 general elections constituted by party chief Sonia Gandhi, the party announced. Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi in a release said Rahul Gandhi, who already has a de facto number 2 status in the party, tops the list of members of the crucial Election Coordination Committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Among other members of the panel are Sonia Gandhi's political adviser Ahmed Patel, party general secretaries Janardan Dwivedi, Digvijaya Singh and Madhusudan Mistry and party strategist and Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh. The Congress president also formed three sub−groups under the panel to look after specific issues such as pre−poll alliances, manifesto and government programmes, and communications and publicity. The announcement on the groups was made at the party's 'Samvad Baithak' (Dialogue Session) held Nov 4 at Surajkund, a town bordering Delhi in Haryana. While Rahul's close aide and Minister for Youth

Alma Monthly Seminar Series-III

Affairs Jitendra Singh has been included in the sub−group on pre−poll alliances, other young leaders such as Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari, Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, MP Deepender Hooda (son of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda), and Congress spokesman Sandeep Dikshit have been included in the sub−panel on communications and publicity. Rahul's imprint was also visible on the Manmohan Singh cabinet reshuffle Oct 28, which had brought in a mix of youth and experience. Ever since, there has been speculation that Rahul Gandhi may be given a more prominent role in the party during the planned organisational reshuffle. Announcement is being seen in the party as giving a clear leadership role to Rahul Gandhi as the Congress, hit hard by allegations of corruption over the past one year, prepares for the next big electoral challenge of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Rahul is also expected to rope in more younger leaders for party work. Among the members of the sub−group on pre−poll alliances are Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Petroleum Minister M. Veerappa Moily, Youth Affairs Minister Jitendra Singh besides senior leaders Suresh Pachauri, Mohan Prakash and Mukul Wasnik, who recently left the ministry of social justice to work for the party.

It is a well-known fact that actor Aamir Khan is often called the 'Mr. Perfectionist' of Bollywood for his attention to every single detail and the actor, who will be seen playing a police officer in upcoming suspense thriller Talaash has proved once again the logic behind the tag. It seems that as the shooting of the movie mostly took place after sunset, Aamir would go out of his way to chat to cops, who would be patrolling the area near the

sets. Sources claim that the actor was often seen asking the police officers about details of their work and the places that they would patrol as part of their duties. Needless to say, the police officials were more than eager to share their experiences with the Sarfarosh star. Directed by Reema Kagti, Talaash also stars Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor and the much anticipated film is slated to release.

It has been a great season :Maria NEW DELHI: Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova says 2012 was a great year for her when she completed a career Grand Slam by winning her maiden French Open, her first major title since 2008. Sharapaova is now the sixth female player in the Open Era to complete a career Grand Slam. The win also brought her back to top of world rankings for the fifth time briefly before being replaced by Victoria Azarenka. "It truly has been a remarkable year and now I have got a little free time which has allowed me to come here," said Sharapova on her first visit to India. The Russian was here to announce her association with Homestead, a UK-based real estate company. Talking more about the season, Sharapova said: "It has been quite rewarding. You try so hard all your life to get to the top and then you get away from it. So, it was quite satisfying to come back to winning ways." The 25-year-old started 2012 finishing runners-up at the Australia Open, followed by the French Open win and then

she capped off the season by losing to her old rival Serena Williams in the final of the WTA Championships in Istanbul. Sharapova also won a silver at the London Olympics. "It is satisfying if you look back at the time I spent away from the sport after the shoulder surgery. I was only 21 at the time of the surgery and it was unusual to undergo something like that at such a young age. A lot of players are not able to carry on after an injury like that. I was fortunate," said Sharapova, who underwent the surgery in 2008 and struggled with form after her return. Sharapova rated her victory at the French Open the best of the four Grand Slams. "It is hard to define which one is more special. They came at different times of my career. But the French Open this year was extra special. I came back from the injury and realised how hard it was to come back to winning ways. How hard it was to earn it," she said.Sharapova now looks forward to the next season and improving her record against Williams (2-9) and Azarenka (4-7). "She (Williams) is an incredible athlete and has achieved so much success. It is great to have rivalries in the sport. You are always working hard to do better than your competition. I hope I do better against her in 2013, as well as Azarenka," she added.
